  1. Hi all, new to the forum. To much of your potential dismay, I went with an AT LP-60 for my first player. It's what I could afford at the time, given my impatience. It's been running fine for years, but I'd like to invest in some higher quality equipment. My main concern is that upgrading the turntable might not actually be the lowest hanging fruit on my tree, relative to the whole setup. First, some quick questions that have materialized since I bought that first table: 1. How much does the audio cable quality/length/type affect the sound, if at all? 2. How necessary is continuous tempo control vs discrete 33 1/3 vs 45 vs 78 speeds? (I.E. is ALL vinyl true to the original recording BPM/tempo, or is it necessary to 'undo' slight stretching or condensing of the tempo?) 3. Is there any tonal advantage to having the pre-amplification inside vs outside the turntable unit? Here's my current setup (try not to laugh): -AT LP-60 Table (running it in 'line' output setting to take advantage of the built in preamp) wired to an inline volume knob --> then wired to speakers (all via red/white RCA) -Connected to two JBL LSR305 active studio monitors All in all, I have always thought 'the speakers sound great with anything I put through them' (I have a 4 way analog RCA switch that allows me to run CD/Vinyl/3.5mm AUX through the same speakers). That being said, I have been exposed to higher fidelity systems and certainly appreciate the difference in quality. I'd like to put myself on the trajectory to be able to continuously upgrade my system one piece at a time. My budget for immediate upgrades would be about $750. Thanks to anyone that reads this and helps me learn a thing or two! Cheers, ARI
  2. I just wanted to bring to everyone's attention a cool new feature within your user profile page just launched by the VC coding team. You can now add all your vinyl gear ( to our user profile. I setup mine to show you an example. When you click my profile on the left hand side under my "About" section we added another section titled "Your Gear Setup". Now you can share your turntable setup in all it's glory! To add your gear just go to your profile page (click your profile name in the black menu bar top right). Click edit "Edit Profile" near the top of the page. A pop up window will appear and under your "Basic Info" you will be able to fill in all your gear! Any issues doing so please @ me or pm me! Thanks to @vinyl addict for the feature request!
  3. Beginner’s Guide to Hi–Fi Created to hopefully aid anyone venturing into this stressful, beautiful hobby. I will update this with more information whenever I have time to waste. Anyone is welcome to chime in. Basic Hi-Fi Chain: SOURCE -> AMPLIFICATION -> SPEAKERS (click to jump to section) The source component reads the recorded information and translates it into the signal that will be later perceived as sound. Amplification takes that signal and amplifies it (no, really?) in order to make it strong enough to move the drivers of the speaker. A speaker is a collective of drivers that are moved by the signal, producing air pressure in front of them which to us, mortal beings, means hearing sound. When putting together a hi-fi setup, always keep in mind: The end result will only be as good as the weakest link. Buying an expensive turntable and a good phono preamp is useless if you're using cheap computer speakers. By no means should you decide to just get a shitty turntable then. Instead, think carefully how to ration your budget across all important components. Jump to setting up & use: SOURCE, AMPLIFICATION, SPEAKERS LIST OF RECCOMENDED EQUIPMENT FOR DIFFERENT BUDGETS
  4. 2019 has been a rough year so far So unfortunately I'm being forced to sell a pair of unused/still-in-the-box Klipsch R-15M bookshelf speakers I've been holding onto. I paid $250 but am looking to get $100 + shipping (box is fairly large and weighs 23lbs, so shipping is probably $20-$35 depending on your location). Again this would greatly help me right now so please hit me up if your interested. These are great speakers and, like I said, still brand new in the box.
  5. So I got these Polk Audio speakers from my step-dad and they came with no cables and I'm not sure what kind of cable I would need to be able to connect it to my receiver or turntable. I'm new to actual set-ups outside of just using a turntable's internal speaker so help and knowledge is appreciated Below are the pictures of the back of the polk audio speakers and the back of my receiver. http://imgur.com/a/73Bun
  6. So I'm new to this. Not music or sound but vinyl. Im 19 a college student and have shit for money, that being said heres my set up that I'm damn proud of. -sony ps lx 300 usb turntable (around 100 bucks, a gift from my gf for christmas) -pre amp included in the turntable -old zenith receiver circa 1995 ( i found just laying around a family members house he was happy to see go) -two rca tweeters i got for free from a friend (the impedance isn't high enough but they work well) -two rca surrounds and a rca center i got from a thrift store (5 bucks for the lot) -one zenith powered sub i got with the reciever -all connected by the thinest speaker wire radio shack offers and old rca cables and a y split for the sub total is about 115 dollars including 100 for the turntable this is a shit set up that most people would laugh at but at the end of the day I'm quite pleased with myself each piece took time to find (lots of thrift store diving for those speakers) and it delivers music to my ears just fine so this is a thread to brag about a set up that won't turn any heads but that you enjoy and are proud of, now or in the past, id love to see this take off so share with your friends, enjoy the music:)
  7. Hey, first post here! Okay so basically me and my siblings are all chipping in together to get my Dad some new setup for Christmas. He's got hundreds of vinyl and his current setup is pretty poor. We've decided on a Rega RP1 as it seems pretty decent for the price. Anyway - was wondering if someone could give us some advice on whats needed? i.e. preamp or no preamp? also - what speakers would go well with this Rega model? Nothing overly expensive if possible but any suggestions are welcome. From UK so UK stockists would be ideal but no worries if not - just an idea of what is needed is good enough Cheers!
  8. Newbie who has no idea what they're doing. I have a U-Turn Audio Orbit w/ a Grado Black1 cartridge, my receiver is a Sony TA-AX520, equalizer is a Sony SEQ-120, and my speakers are a pair of slightly worn out DBX Soundfield left and right speakers I got for free from a friend. I'm gonna buy new speakers soon as the left one is a worn out and sounds like an old radio, but I wasn't sure if I should try finding the same speakers as opposed to some of the ones recommended on the beginner's thread. I was thinking about the Dayton Audio B652 because I'm cheap (for now), but I'm not really sure how to tell if a speaker is good or not, or how to really compare them with just specifications, or how to tell if a receiver is even good, or if anything is good, and information about these DBX speakers are kinda scarce it seems. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  9. Hi, I'm looking to change my current set-up. I have an RCA LAB 1200 turntable, an Optimus STAV 3580 receiver, and currently two big floor speakers. The speakers were rebuilt by a friend many years ago and they are good. However I need to move the set-up to a smaller room and so I'd like to get smaller speakers that will take up less space and also speakers that can give good quality sound at a lower volume. So one question is, how small can I go and still get decent bass? I don't want thumping bass, but I want the bass to have a good presence. I listen to rock, some blues and soul, indie, and some roots music (examples would be Fleetwood Mac, REM, Natalie Merchant, Leon Bridges, Kristen Diable, The Besnard Lakes, Queen, and Zep). I'd love to get something good for under $300 (who wouldn't) but would consider spending up to around $500 if it's going to give me good sound. Recommendations??? I also welcome feedback on the turntable and receiver. Thanks.
  10. Thanks for considering my setup question. I am a relatively new collector (2 years), and I am trying to plan out a new turntable setup. I recently purchased a U-Turn Orbit Plus turntable. I plan on ordering a Project Audio Phone Box MM pre-amp. Here's my questions(s): Does anyone have any experience with setting up a turntable/pre-amp to a Sonos Play:5? I would really like to play music in different rooms throughout my house. Clearly, I'm concerned that there could be audio integrity issues? Any comments on ease of setup? Other suggestions/comments/criticism? I appreciate any advice you might lend.
  11. Hello everyone, I have my own setup in my record studio but recently I bought an old school Technics SL-BD35 for my GF. Next step is the speakers. Now, you know girls...one of her first requests is that it should also "look good". I know I know, girls.. My budget is 400 bucks and my idea was the following one: Technics SL-BD35 + Bellari VP29 Solid State Phono Preamp + Marshall Hanwell 50th Anniversary or Marshall Stanmore. Since I have a little discount on a certain internet site it would cost me exactly 405 $. Do you think that this is a good idea? I thought that the result would be a solid sound quality out of this system plus the damn look she's aiming for but plz let me know what do ya'll think. Thank you for your help. Fab PS: I can already tell you that she doesn't like Audioengine, Nocs n Pioneer S-DJ50X.
  12. I've slowly being replacing components from my original set-up (Cambridge Azur 640A, Rega Fono Mini, Project Debut III with Ortofon OM10 and Mordaunt Short MS908 floor standers) with vintage gear. The Debut III gave way to a Thorens 160 Mk1 which has recently got a Denon DL-110 installed. The Cambridge has been replaced with a Sansui AU-719 (not recapped yet, but has had a Deoxit treatment on all the pots and sounds pretty sweet). I'd now like to replace the speakers. The current ones do the job and certainly have the kick when the amp is cranked up that I enjoy (and compensate for the MC output of the Denon) but I do wonder if I could get even more out of vintage speakers. So, what vintage speakers would people recommend? I'm looking to spend no more then £300 and I'm in the UK. I mostly listen to rock and hip hop, but do have singer-songwriter types in there as well.
  13. I've decided that within the next few months, once I save some money, I am going to upgrade all components of my system (1970s JVC turntable with Ortofon cartridge will become Pro-Ject Debut Carbon), and I plan on getting Wharfedale 10.1 and a reasonable amp (I have an okay NAD preamp, so will see what I need). I figure I'm looking to save up $1200 or so for my upgrade. My dad just offered me components from his stereo system, which include a Kenwood Home Theatre receiver (which I'm pretty sure is nothing too fancy, but working) and Bose 201 speakers. I've looked around (on this forum or otherwise), and the feedback on Bose is that they're pretty lousy, average at best. Is it even worth taking these speakers from him? I figure it might allow me to buy the Debut Carbon sooner, and then replace the amp/speakers later into the spring. But am I doing a disservice to the potential of the turntable?
  14. I'm looking to upgrade my speakers and am thinking of building my own. I wanted to see if anyone had any experience and/or opinions about a project like this. I see a few upsides to this: 1) I can spread out the cost - instead of plunking down $500 - $700 all at once I can buy components slowly and then assemble them once I have everything. 2) Seems like I could build a better speaker than I could buy for the same money. 3) It would be fun and satisfying to have a set of speakers that I built myself (assembled is probably more accurate). I'm trying to decide if I should buy a new cabinet or get an old pair of speakers and replace all the components. This is my first project like this and I don't have a woodworking shop so I'm gonna skip the step where I try to build a cabinet and screw it up. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
  15. Long story short, I bought a pair of Paradigm 9se speakers 10+ years ago, used them for a bit then loaned them to a friend when I moved into a small apartment and forgot all about them. He recently returned them and I thought I'd like to use them as part of a budget friendly system - thinking of pairing with the Marantz PM 6004. Does anyone have any experience with this amp and these speakers? HOWEVER, as you can see from the pics, all four dust caps have been pushed in to some varying degree. Do I attempt to fix these? If so, how? Or do I leave them as is and see how they sound once I get the amp? TL/DR - look at these pics and tell me what to do!
  16. I was recently gifted an Audio Technica LP120 turntable. From what I'm reading, if you have powered speakers, you do not need a receiver and a preamp is already built into the turntable. SO, my question is: what is the bare minimum equipment I need to use this turntable? As in, am I right in thinking I just need to buy powered speakers and I'm good to go? (I obviously know this won't produce as great a sound as if I had all of these other things, but I'm on a very tight budget and would like to be able to spin my records while saving up for better equipment). And what speakers would be good as an inexpensive stepping stone while I invest in better ones?
  17. so...i recently have acquired a pair of MTX AAL2230s and i already have a pair of polk monitor 60s. my question is, in the vintage receiver world, how many watts per channel would i need to safely powere these guys? ive been looking at a technics sa-500 receiver to power these, which puts out 55 wpc. i know the MTX's take up a buttload of power. HELP. trying to find the right wattage is a headache.
  18. Right now my setup is a Technics 1200MK2 ->DJM600 Mixer -> Guitar Amp (Please don't even comment on this I know it's complete shit but I don't have anything better right now) If you're wondering how I even have any of the other equipment and not speakers I'll tell you I inherited it from my mother who spent alot of money on her DJ-ing hobby. Anyways my question is, how reliable is any audio equipment from a thrift store? Let me know if you got any good finds from one. Or your experiences otherwise. Also, let's say I were able to spend more money on equipment, what would you suggest running it through? i.e. preamps and speakers Thanks guys.
  19. I recently just bought an Ion Pure LP Turntable (as well as just recently started buying vinyl instead of CDs) and am looking for speakers for the turntable. Pretty much I am looking for a decent set of speakers that will have clear audio. They don't have to be really high end or anything, just something to connect to the turntable via RCA and listen to records. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  20. Okay so I am putting together a two channel system in my living room. Right now all I have is a denon dp-300f hooked up to two Samson 5A's ($200 active speakers i got from my job). I have pretty much made up my mind on the Yamaha AS-500 which is an integrated amp for 399.99. It just seems like the best deal for my money right now. Now onto where I need your help....the speakers. Trying to stick to bookshelves as space is somewhat limited. I have narrowed it down to a few models, if there are any others you'd like to recommend feel free, just know that I am trying to stay within $400-$600 range. The models so far that have caught my eye: 1. Wharfedale 10.2 $449.00 2. Focal Chorus 706V ( I really like the look and the front port ) $499.99 3. PSB Image B6 $549.99 Also, a dark horse was the B&W 685's but they are a bit over my budget at $649 a pair and the price doesnt seem to justify the quality from what I've seen in reviews online, but I could be totally wrong here I would appreciate and and all input, especially from owners/previous owners of these models. I listen to alot of rock, indie and some hip hop so I would like some bass but not too boomy. I could always get a sub later down the road. For now, I just need something that would work well with my TV, PS3, and record player. Now GO.....
  21. Hi there,im going for my frist system so i want to tell me your opinions about some equipment. For turntable i'll go for project debut carbon for sure but speakers and receiver is pain in the ass. FIrst of all im into hardcore punk, crust, screamo a little garage etc so i want agrressive sound but no too much because i will listen for many hours. combination of bright equipment with smooth i guess. ok i have in my mind Rotel RA-10 with Wharfedale Diamond 12.1.. Tell more amps speakers etc with the sound i want plz. Budget is like 900-1000 euro. sorry for the bad english, cheers
  22. Hello there, I just got an old turntable with only four jacks for speaker wires... those thick wires where each speaker has a positive wire and a negative wire... and I want to run it trough a receiver with RCA inputs so I can adjust the bass/treble and hook up two pairs of speakers. I've been toiling over Google and having a surprisingly difficult time finding any information on this. Yesterday I went to a thrift store and bought a pair of small speakers with RCA cables on them, removed the cables from the speakers, stripped them and plugged them into the turntable and ran them to the receiver. The sounds is atrocious, probably owing to the fact that these cables are extremely thin and not made for this purpose... Is there any way to make an RCA cable, or buy one, or am I out of luck? Thanks.
  23. I'm hoping over the next year to acquire the components to a decent audiophile system. I think for a turntable I've chosen a Pro-ject Debut Carbon. What would I need (or want) in the way of preamps, stereos, speakers to complete a nice little living room sound system. This doesn't need to be something that can play my T.V. audio or CDs or anything. I just want a system dedicated to quality vinyl sound.
  24. Hey guys! Lately I've been thinking about getting a new set of speakers but I'm not sure what would be right for my setup. I've got a Technics SL 1400 MK2 turntable with a Shure M447 cartridge and a Kenwood KR6600 stereo. The speakers I"m using right now are (don't hate me) just cheap Logitech Z506 surround sound speakers I got from best buy (hence my desire to upgrade). The one thing I do really like about the speakers is the included subwoofer which gives me awesome bass when I want it, so I do wish I could keep that. I listen to a lot of punk/pop punk as well as hardcore and a bit of hip hop, so I'd like to get something with a clear upper end that can still deliver a bass kick. If at all possible, I'd like to spend in the 200-300 dollar range, but I suppose I'm not opposed to going a tad over budget if it's worth it. Any help or suggestions you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated!
  25. Hey guys, pretty simple looking for a SMALL pair of floor standing speakers to go with a Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10B amp. I'm pretty set on upgrading to that amp. Now I'm just looking for a good set of speakers to go with it. I would like to stay in the $300-$400 range, and footprint is a big concern for me. I don't have a ton of space but would like to get the full sound of floor stands rather than a set of bookshelf speakers. That being said if someone has a set of bookshelves that will compete please point me in their direction as well.
