  1. Out August 19, via Barsuk. PO from Barsuk here Stream "Relatively Permanent" here Chris Staples' Golden Age meets us at the intersection of nostalgia and the future, and holds out a hand. For some time, Chris Staples was longing for things to return to the way they had been. The way they were before he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and his pancreas failed. Before his bike accident and the resulting hip surgery. Before the dissolution of a long-term relationship. He had been left to pick up the pieces, but for a long time couldn’t bring himself to. But the myths we build about our pasts are often gilded: we believe things were innocent, they were whole. Staples, after feeling the seductive pull of that illusion for years, had had enough of it. He was going to tear it down. As he began to pick up the pieces of his life, and coincidentally began to write music for a new album to follow his acclaimed 2014 Barsuk debut American Soft, his songs pivoted forward, becoming the new record, to be released in August 2016: Golden Age. Staples notes, "It's really easy to idealize an earlier time in your life, but it's not useful. It can be a trap that keeps you from finding new good things to live for. Golden Age is about that myth we carry around. The myth of our past being idyllic. I don’t want to waste any more time dwelling on it."
  2. Pre-order here!! Something To Break Records is proud to announce our very first release, Chris Staples brilliant solo album, “American Soft.” We’ve been working with Staples over the last few months to get this album pressed and we’re excited to say that we’re opening the pre-order for it today! The pre-order will remain open for a month (Feb 8th). This release will include 2 bonus tracks that were written and recorded specifically for the vinyl release! We will be releasing 3 different variants. 100 clear w/ white and blue splatter, 150 black, and 200 white. Each of the pre-orders will be hand numbered and signed and will come with a hand written song lyric of your choosing from any song off of American Soft. The lyric sheets will also be signed and numbered by Staples. The pre-order will be $20 and is expected to ship in April 2013. We are also releasing a bundle of all 3 variants with a hand bound, signed, and numbered lyric booklet that will include a cover page and short thank you from Staples for helping to support this project. This lyric book will include hand written lyrics from all 10 songs off of American Soft. There are only 20 of these bundles and they will be available for $50. As an added bonus, anyone who orders during the pre-order month will be included in a drawing to win a free test press of the album. Each order gets your name included 1 time with the bundle giving you 3 chances to win. A total of 2 test presses will be given away. This pre-order is directly helping to fund a small portion of this project and we want to thank everyone who helps support this release. After the pre-order has ended, the record will be available for $15. We hope that the bonus content, as well as knowing that you’re directly supporting Staples and Something To Break will be worth the extra $5 to purchase the pre-order. However, we know that money is often tight and we understand if you’d rather wait to buy the record after the pre-order has finished. The album will be available through our webstore, or you can get it directly from Staples when he goes on his West Coast tour in April. We’re stoked to be able to bring this album to you guys and we cannot wait to get it in our hands so that we can ship them out to you! We’ll also be announcing another small surprise about two weeks into the pre-order, so make sure to “Like” our Facebook page in order to stay up to date with the details of the release. Thank you for being a part of this! Something To Break Records www.somethingtobreak.com www.facebook.com/somethingtobreak

  4. What has been released on vinyl, where Chris Staples have been involved? I'm talking 238, solo, Discover America, etc... Different pressings if you know 'em.
  5. Chris Staples (Twothirtyeight, Discover America) has released a comp called After The Beep: A Compilation Recorded on Phones. It's completely free and includes songs from Staples, Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra, RAGC!), Denison Witmer, Telekenesis and more. Staples' song, Cindy, Diana, Janet, Wanda is also available on the American Soft vinyl we released earlier this year. Here's a short description of the idea... I've been thinking, if a song is great you could record it on a walkman, or whatever is laying around and the soul of that great song will be communicated. It doesn't matter what kind of paper a great book is printed on as long as you can read it. Thats the analogy I always use. Anyway, all these songs were recorded on cell phones and nothing else. I have many very talented musicmaker friends, so thanks to them for participating. Please share with your friends and thanks for stopping by! Also, special thanks to Dog On Fire for making the artwork. It's at least worth checking out cause it's free! http://chrisstaples.bandcamp.com/album/after-the-beep-a-compilation-recorded-on-phones
