  1. Hi all, new to the forum. To much of your potential dismay, I went with an AT LP-60 for my first player. It's what I could afford at the time, given my impatience. It's been running fine for years, but I'd like to invest in some higher quality equipment. My main concern is that upgrading the turntable might not actually be the lowest hanging fruit on my tree, relative to the whole setup. First, some quick questions that have materialized since I bought that first table: 1. How much does the audio cable quality/length/type affect the sound, if at all? 2. How necessary is continuous tempo control vs discrete 33 1/3 vs 45 vs 78 speeds? (I.E. is ALL vinyl true to the original recording BPM/tempo, or is it necessary to 'undo' slight stretching or condensing of the tempo?) 3. Is there any tonal advantage to having the pre-amplification inside vs outside the turntable unit? Here's my current setup (try not to laugh): -AT LP-60 Table (running it in 'line' output setting to take advantage of the built in preamp) wired to an inline volume knob --> then wired to speakers (all via red/white RCA) -Connected to two JBL LSR305 active studio monitors All in all, I have always thought 'the speakers sound great with anything I put through them' (I have a 4 way analog RCA switch that allows me to run CD/Vinyl/3.5mm AUX through the same speakers). That being said, I have been exposed to higher fidelity systems and certainly appreciate the difference in quality. I'd like to put myself on the trajectory to be able to continuously upgrade my system one piece at a time. My budget for immediate upgrades would be about $750. Thanks to anyone that reads this and helps me learn a thing or two! Cheers, ARI
  2. So its 2015 and I'm sure we all want to know whats the best value vinyl setup Turntable Amp Speakers So whats everyone think? I know this will have been answered before but thought as were in the new year we could answer it again And also help me out as I'm wanting some new stuff
  3. So I decided to buy a Technics SL-1200 MKII that my local record store had for sale, and now I would really like some advice from the more experienced members around these parts: a) The Technics is equipped with a Stanton 500-II cart which has had a new needle installed. Did a little bit of research and saw that it's more of a DJ-purpose cart. The owner insists it is perfectly acceptable for listening purposes, which I believe, but I thought I would get some other input. Will this be suitable for my needs for now, while I save up for something better in the future? What would be a good replacement? As for the rest of my setup, I found a Pioneer SX-780 receiver on Craigslist that looks to be in very good condition and that I believe is fairly priced (asking $200, but I got them down to $160), would this be a good match for this particular table? If so, what are some fairly priced speakers I could seek out to suit this receiver? I found a pair of HPM 100s for $300, but that's a little too steep for me. If that's truly what I should go for, I'll try to barter a bit, but I'd prefer to keep it around $200 max for now. Upgrades will come with time. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated, as I'm relatively new to this and haven't had a good setup in my few years as a collector.
  4. I am new to collecting. My parents saw me starting to collect and surprised me with a portable Crosley. After spending, oh about, 2 seconds on this forum I asked if they kept the receipt. Now I'm wondering. Looking around. I've got my eye on a Pro-Ject Debut III. Also working on building my room mancave. Buuuut, my main question is Does anyone/Is it a good idea to, run a good record player out of a home theater/surround sound system? Or would I need designated speakers/amp strictly for enjoying my records? I'd like to be able to game/netflix/enjoy my records from the same speakers, but if it's not a good idea I'm hoping somebody here has the answer Also, on a separate note. opinions on Pro-Ject Debut III?
  5. Hello All: I've been wanting to purchase a turntable for ages, but it has been cost prohibitive until recently. At any rate, I recently came into possession of an Acoustic Research (Model AR-XB, I believe), purchased by my Dad in 1975. He had an issue with the stylus jumping back in the day, but other than that it was in great working condition. I've cleaned it up, and aside from the rubbery shock absorbtion pad adhesive dry-rotting on the outer-platter, I think it's ready to go. I plan on replacing the cartidge tomorrow (unless it would be unwise to do so), and am in need of some advice as to a quality replacement, as well as any advice as to a quality/affordable pre-amp through which to run it. I've saved my dumbest question for last: the portion of the motor that moves the belt appears to have two guides through which to run the belt. Does this have to do with motor speed, i.e., 33 1/3 v. 45? Thanks in advance! SCBobo
