  1. OK, so it's been awhile since I've tampered with my setup and I'm ready to lay down some money on improvements. Right now I'm running a Music Hall 5.1 turntable with a (pretty standard and probably shitty comparatively) Onkyo TX-8255 receiver and some PSB Alpha B1 bookshelf speakers. I just purchased Sennheiser 6XX headphones from Massdrop, set to ship in December, and it got me thinking of my setup and what I can do to really get the most out of them. I'm guessing I should start with replacing the Onkyo receiver and was thinking of getting a Yamaha integrated amp in the $500-$600 range. I was also thinking of putting the money towards a dedicated headphone amp instead (or eventually in tandem) but don't know if I'll get the most out of the headphones if it's still running through the Onkyo. Suggestions? I'm open to any and all suggestions especially since I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to the finer points of setup. I'm willing to modestly invest and would like something that would last and obviously sound great. Thanks for any help and input.
  2. Hey you guys! I'm looking to get my first stereo receiver for my setup. I have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon along with some Dali Zensor 3s to power. I'd love to stay around or under $300. I really want the Marantz PM6005 but it's out of my budget so I was looking at some Onkyo ones (A-9010 or A-9050). Let me know if you have any suggestions and thank you in advance!
  3. Im wanting to get into vinyl collecting, but like a normal 16 year old i dont got tons of cash. I know the best way to listen to vinyl is with a multi thousand dollar set up. but im wondering if i bought a older turntable can i use a adapter to convert it to 3.5mm and then use a headphone amp to convert it to line level so i can use it with my headphones? I might be able to get my hands on something like a kenwood kd-291rc for about $25 is that fair?

  6. Okay so I inherited a dual 1219 turntable and know absolutely nothing besides the fact I know nothing. So can I hook my turntable right up to my Bose? Do I need some kind of amp? Are their any good youtube tutorials out there? (the ones I've seen so far weren't all that helpful) What do I need to know about cleaning/oiling this baby? Is there some kind of group in MN that I can get help from? It looks like it hasn't been touched in awhile should I go get it checked out and have them tell me what I'm doing wrong? Why can't I get the speakers to work? Everything looks like how it is supposed from my comparison. Please feel free to inform me of how much of a noob I am. Thanks peeps.

  8. I'm not sure what's going on. But something is messed up with my system. The sound will randomly cut out on the right side. It's still playing but barely...... left side is fine. The only thing that brings the right side back is disconnecting and reconecting the ground wire on the phono input on the amp. After a while it cuts out again :S Please help me, this is driving me nuts!! Any tips are appreciated.
  9. I hate creating new threads for this kind of stuff when I know there are tons of other threads about amps, but I feel like everyone's situation is different and we are all asking different questions and looking for different answers so here goes... Here is my current setup: Pro-ject Debut Carbon with standard Ortofon 2M Red MM Cartridge Denon AVR-810 Receiver Epos Epic 1 Bookshelf speakers I am looking to upgrade to an integrated amp and I am having a hard time making a decision. These are the ones I am looking at... Yamaha A-S300 Yamaha A-S500 Onkyo A-9050 Marantz PM6004 Honestly I really don't want to spend over $350 but I can't say I'm not considering that Marantz so I have to throw it in there. I'm not one to blast my speakers ever really so I am wondering what I would lose if I were to go with a Yamaha A-S300 over the A-S500. Also, have any of you had any experience with Onkyo Integrated Amplifiers? What are your thoughts on the Onkyo A-9050? Also, what are your thoughts on 2-channel receivers? The Yamaha A-S500BL looks like a good option, and I like the idea of having a tuner, but what am I losing by going with a receiver over an integrated amp?
  10. Question for anyone to chime in, and I understand the answer is "listen to both and use what sounds best", however I am looking for someone that might have experience with similar equipment. I already own a Musical Fidelity V90 LPS phono stage that I had been using to let me use my Marantz Slimline 1402 receiver with. I purchased a used Rotel RA2030 on a whim for a good price. Is there any advantage to using my Musical Fidelity Phono into the AUX of the Rotel, or will the internal Phono in the Rotel sound the same or better? side topic too, I inherited an extensive collection of classic vinyl that was well loved and well played and partied through the 60's and 70's, that being said what is the best way to wash, restore the collection at home? thanks everyone
  11. I have for sale one of the first run of Verellen Meatsmoke Preamplifiers. This one is numbered BV #15 and includes the provided power supply cable. Selling because I thought it didn't really suit my sound quite as well as my other amps do, so I rarely used it. It has about 90-120 minutes of use on it. The wood panels are custom stained natural. It's in the same condition as when I bought it and I still have the box and packing that it shipped in. I have to note though, that I recently found out the entire first run of these used an incorrect resistor, so they sent me the correct component, so that is obviously included. I hadn't used it for about 6 months before finding this out, and have obviously not used it since. There is a video which demostrates how to perform the modification and it is simple and easy and only takes about 5-10 minutes to perform (that's if you are comfortable with soldering, I am not.) Or you could bring it to a tech and have them perform the mod, can't see it costing more than $10-$20. It's an extremely versatile unit since you can use it with electric bass or electric guitar. You can use it as a distortion pedal in front of your amp, you can run it into your FX loop to use as a pre-amp, you can even run direct to ProTools or other DAW and there is a built in speaker simulator for this application. These sell for $700 new, not including shipping Asking $555 plus buyer picks up or pays shipping. ------- I also have for sale a Musicare Tenor Saxophone that includes a hard case, mouthpiece, neck strap, internal cleaning brush and there is even a tube of cork grease inside the case. I am selling it because I would like to get a woodwind in a smaller footprint, such as an Alto Sax , or possibly a Clarinet. These sell for $950 new, not including shipping ------- Not interested in trades for either of these items. Looking to get as close to retail as I can for both. So pretty much looking for the best offer, in case anyone wants to save some loot by buying used, rather than new. Thanks.
  12. Just pulled the trigger on one of these off amazon this morning. Signed up for prime and am expecting this tomorrow (one day shipping for 3 dollhairs!). It was between this and the Azur 651P and the Rega Fono Mini. Since I have nowhere to audition these I figured if i dont like the pro-ject Ill just return it and try one of the others I had shortlisted. My question is, anyone of you guys using one of these? And if so, what do you like/dislike about it? Did it make noticable imporvement in your set-up?
  13. Are there any recommendable iOS apps available that amp up your iTunes music? Like a headphone amp app or DAC-type app?
