  1. Beginner’s Guide to Hi–Fi Created to hopefully aid anyone venturing into this stressful, beautiful hobby. I will update this with more information whenever I have time to waste. Anyone is welcome to chime in. Basic Hi-Fi Chain: SOURCE -> AMPLIFICATION -> SPEAKERS (click to jump to section) The source component reads the recorded information and translates it into the signal that will be later perceived as sound. Amplification takes that signal and amplifies it (no, really?) in order to make it strong enough to move the drivers of the speaker. A speaker is a collective of drivers that are moved by the signal, producing air pressure in front of them which to us, mortal beings, means hearing sound. When putting together a hi-fi setup, always keep in mind: The end result will only be as good as the weakest link. Buying an expensive turntable and a good phono preamp is useless if you're using cheap computer speakers. By no means should you decide to just get a shitty turntable then. Instead, think carefully how to ration your budget across all important components. Jump to setting up & use: SOURCE, AMPLIFICATION, SPEAKERS LIST OF RECCOMENDED EQUIPMENT FOR DIFFERENT BUDGETS

  3. So recently, I stumbled on a 70s era Discwasher, with some D4 fluid from before the RCA rebranding. Some collectors I respected told me that the fluid is still safe to use on records. I saw no immediate problem upon using the fluid, but now there are a bunch of people telling me that it wasn't safe, and that surpassing the shelf life of 2 or 3 years is possibly damaging to your records. Now I'm worried that I've done some sort of damage that I just don't notice yet. Any help?
  4. I just purchased my first of many soon to come vinyl, but I have not discovered a way to clean them! Any suggestions? Housemade ideas as well as products too!
  5. Okay so I inherited a dual 1219 turntable and know absolutely nothing besides the fact I know nothing. So can I hook my turntable right up to my Bose? Do I need some kind of amp? Are their any good youtube tutorials out there? (the ones I've seen so far weren't all that helpful) What do I need to know about cleaning/oiling this baby? Is there some kind of group in MN that I can get help from? It looks like it hasn't been touched in awhile should I go get it checked out and have them tell me what I'm doing wrong? Why can't I get the speakers to work? Everything looks like how it is supposed from my comparison. Please feel free to inform me of how much of a noob I am. Thanks peeps.

  7. I just started selling some. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331282550809?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 There are before/after pics in the eBay listing. Any questions let me know! Works really well with discwasher and the like. I've also used just a cleaning cloth with it and it works well with that too. I've been using it for over a year and it's been awesome, so I decided I'd share it with other collectors.
  8. Posted this same question on reddit, and was told it's an "outgassing" issue. I have Worship and Tribute by Glassjaw on vinyl and it seems the plastic insert has melted onto the vinyl leaving a thin residue that results in thick white noise when I pop it onto my turntable. It is only on the side that the plastic was touching; the side that the paperboard was touching is pristine. Record and sleeve (hard to show in a picture, it looks a little blotchy in areas): http://imgur.com/a/i4GUy Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!
  9. Hello world. I've seen a lot of folks taking good care of their needles but ignoring the state or the quality of their mat underneat. After all, if it's dirty, your records will get dirty too. I've been ditching felt mats because I think they attract to much dust and I kept the original rubber mat of my Denon DP300F. I've been using alcohol to clean my rubber mat and it's seems to do a good job but I've wondering if people had better alternatives. Also, is alcohol a bad idea to clean the mat with?
  10. Hi folks, I have a record I with a lot of greasy dirt on the surface. I tried dry cleaning with a micro fibre cloth and my MoFi brush, then wet cleaning with the water/isopropanol/dish soap combo, pure alcohol, and lens cleaner - nothing worked. At all. I mean, there are also some small particles/fluffs/hairs on the surface, but I just can't get rid of it. Seems like the dirt+particles are glued onto the record or something. Here are some pictures: http://imgur.com/a/CfxAP The thing is that the dirt stuff is only on the opaque white splotches of the record, the clear red part looks great. Any ideas?
  11. I'm looking into getting an anti-static brush but i'm not sure which one to get, any help most appreciated. The person who helps the most gets to see my boobs.
