You can usually tell based on the sticker or the barcode numbers, or Catalog numbers. If not, the record company also helps to narrow it down. If someone is telling me they have a hot topic pressing of dude ranch and it says MTS on it, its obvious its not that pressing, as Geffen did those. Discogs is really useful to distinguish copies. The only numbers you can't see when it's sealed is the matrix, and sure, some are similar on the outside, like Buddha, but with neighborhoods, it came with a sticker, as do most, if not all, hot topic releases. I may be new to this site, but I'm definitely not new to record collecting my friends.

typically the HT presses do have a sticker, but that sticker (at least on all the Blink presses) just reads "Hot Topic Limited Edition Colored Vinyl" I don't see how the sticker method is ever a truly reliable method to go off :P

Alright. I'm going to clarify this, so you all leave me the heck alone. The only reason I prefer to buy sealed records is that I've received far too many records in the mail from forums and whatnot, which have been described as clean, with no scratches, however, when I receive them they have scratches all over the place. I'm sick of getting screwed over. So please just stop being jerks and try to understand where I'm coming from.

Not trying to be mean, just curious:  Where are you receiving all these scratched records from?
