jhulud
OK. I think I may be able to answer my own question. What has mainly drawn me in to shoegaze & dreampop and even some noisepop, is the emotional weight created by the music itself. It's the mix of that wall of sound as it's always mentioned but its ability to feel open and expansive and a place you can feel yourself floating in. It's like a tidal wave of sound that just drowns you in and you can get happily lost in. And to me, this type of music...well, some bands more specifically, feels as though it's the auditory expression of all the feelings & emotions that I have swirling in my head and heart at any given time. Ever since I got hooked on the music in its first wave of early 90's...it's been an emotional trip. I will always be that hardcore punk metalhead kid, but there's something about shoegaze/dreampop that hits me harder in the heart than anything else. youspinmeround
To me it's a cross between all the 80 and 90s alternative bands I loved (smashing pumpkins, the cure, dinosaur jr) crossed with the diy/underground/emotional aspect of hard core that I grew up with but don't really listen to any more. The lyrics, while usually drowned out, are always thoughtful.

This is pretty much how I feel about it as well, but what I really find to be the best part, for me, about this sort of music in particular is the way that some bands can really make me dig deep and that is awesome, but not singular to this genre. What really gets me is that I can get so lost in the sound and the noise alone that its like I'm in my own world where nothing else matters, and I can just close my eyes and get lost in a world that is being built as the album goes on. I hope that makes sense to at least someone. I also do not do drugs or drink at all hahaha

NapalmBrain
Can't find any mention of Westkust "Last Forever" yet. Hands down one of the best shoegaze albums I've heard since the 90s. Already out on bandcamp, the Luxury pressing sold out but the Run For Cover version comes out next month. I pre-ordered the /300 variant (still available with digital download available immediately). Seriously check them out http://runforcoverrecords.limitedrun.com/products/550424-westkust-last-forever http://westkust.bandcamp.com/album/last-forever topshelfsquad

noalarmplanet
I think Juan asked what makes you love shoegaze/dream pop. So this sounds weird but it makes me feel in love with the whole world and everything around me. Weird because it's usually sad music. It has this weird ethereal quality to it, like travelling the world as a ghost or seeing the past through an ancient camera or something. It's like being a part of your own movie, and it's just wonderful, sad, and hopeful. I direct my own little movies in my head to it.

sunkilmoonfan
I know that Radio Dept was mentioned here earlier - and I just wanted to give a heads up that they have a new 12" coming out on June 16th, limited to 1000 copies. I made a thread here if you're interested: http://boards.vinylcollective.com/topic/113427-po-the-radio-dept-occupied-616/#entry2315996 I've scoured the internet trying to get audio samples from SOMEWHERE - but alas, nothing yet. (Cam of Old Gray and Zach of Lovechild, Burglary Years) They were apparently working on the album late last year but have been quiet this whole year.
