-tess.
I am not completely new, but definitely still need to check these out. So will do. Thanks for the starting point, guys.
Danh
For those who have listened to My Bloody Valentine's "Isn't Anything" and "m b v," which album do you enjoy more? I listened to both, and I like "m b v" more, but that seems like an unpopular opinion.
glass realms
Isn't Anything is a better album than mbv. mbv is good but not great. The first half sounds like (and probably are) the songs they started working on immediately after Loveless so they already sound dated. The second half sounds like a bunch of half-written songs with a bunch of effects on top of it to hide the fact that they were half-written songs. Eliminator Jr.
Isn't Anything is a better album than mbv. mbv is good but not great. I love all of their three albums but to me they are pretty different. Especially Isn't Anything and mbv have pretty much nothing in common. mbv's first three songs do share a lot of its sound aesthetics with Loveless, while to me none of it sounds dated or half-written. The second half must've mostly been written around 1998, when Kevin said in multiple interviews that he's found a lot of inspiration in jungle/club music. To me it all sounds amazing and totally out of time, just like Loveless does to this day. And keep in mind how infinitely great the accompanying EP's to Isn't Anything and Loveless are. Just as essential as the best tracks in either album.
Danh
Glass Realms/Eliminator Jr. - Great observations. I've noticed the difference in songs on "mbv," but I never realized how the first half was more related to "Loveless" while the second half sounded more like jungle music or whatever. Now that I notice it, I feel like an idiot for not realizing something so obvious. And you're right, Eliminator. "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless" have nothing in common, which is why I was so taken aback when I first listened to it. There was less of that "shoegaze sound" that I was expecting to hear. I'll definitely give it another listen though. The reason why I ask is because my friend is letting me have his "Isn't Anything" or "mbv" copy . I can only choose one. Eliminator Jr.
Since mbv is still in print, I'd go for the other one. Not impossible to come by, but we all know the hassle of seeking oop-stuff.
-tess.
Well, I listened to Loveless today for the first time. I don't know why the hell it took me this long to finally listen to it, but damn. They were ahead of their time. I already love it and I am pretty sure it will grow on me with each listen.

LeeKaye
Well, I listened to Loveless today for the first time. I don't know why the hell it took me this long to finally listen to it, but damn. They were ahead of their time. I already love it and I am pretty sure it will grow on me with each listen. Excellent, glad you like it. The problem for me, (given that I was buying all this stuff when it was released all those years ago) is that a lot of modern shoegaze is OK. But sometimes I can't help but think that it's been done before, and much better. Which is why I need the modern bands to add their twist, or something else to the equation. Otherwise it's just like going back in time.
eskimoswim
Listening to The Angel Pool right now. Pretty cool stuff man That one is eventually being pressed by Handmade Birds (or so they've been saying for nearly four years now). its definitely their most accessible and lush sounding release. i slightly prefer their second album, In The Russet Gold of This Vain Hour, which is a bit more melancholy and was produced by Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins. Waters
Everything between Psychocandy and Stoned and Dethroned. This. I picked up the vinyl box set a couple days ago from insound through amazon for $99. Looks like it was the last one for now, but I'd keep an eye on it- has all 6 on 2x LP 45's, plus a double live and a rarities disc-
glass realms
FYI, the box set isn't 2xLPs for each album. Just for Munki and The BBC Sessions. All the other albums are single LPs
