Philly quartet NOTHING unveil their tribute to NIRVANA's "Something In The Way" via Noisey/Vice:

Instead of their trademark whitewash of guitar layers, NOTHING opts for a starker approach to the somber classic, with piano and vibrant vocals up front in Will Yip's beautiful mix.

The track is found on Robotic Empire's Whatever Nevermind tribute to NIRVANA's breakout album, which sees Nevermind covered in full and set for release on April 18th (Record Store Day) on both vinyl, and digitally.

Digital pre-orders of the album are up now, with "Something In The Way" available immediately:

La-Dispute.jpg

Roughly a year ago La Dispute recorded a tribute to Nirvana's 'Polly' at a live show in Seattle, capturing the aesthetic of the originators run through the filters of La Dispute's creative engines. The A/V Club showcased the angular version of the classic track and we felt this rendition wonderfully fit the vision we have for our Nirvana tribute series.

On the cusp of releasing Whatever Nevermind alongside Record Store Day 2015, the venerable All Music site has penned an excellent spotlight on La Dispute's contribution, which gives a great insight into the far-reaching influence of Nirvana and why La Dispute chose to cover 'Polly':

From the feature, La Dispute bassist Adam Vass explains how they approached the cover:

"It’s hard, you don’t want to remove it so far from the source material to where it isn't identifiable anymore, but at the same time if we were to just have played it the way it was on the record, it wouldn't have been as good as the original version, and it would have felt wrong, like we were abusing the opportunity. I like to think that we found happy ground in between those two extremes, and we changed it a little bit, but just enough to make it something special for us but still stay true to the original track."

The A/V' Club's original feature includes a short documentary on the musicians and cover song, which can also be found here:

Whatever Nevermind is being released on vinyl and digitally this Saturday, April 18th.

Digital pre-orders are live now with 'Polly' available as an immediate download (alongside Circa Survive's cover of 'Drain You' and Nothing's tribute to 'Something In The Way'):

Didn't realize there was a 7" with this too.  Does it have a nice little spot for it inside the sleeve kind of like Floor - Floor did?

I dont know about that Floor release, but the 7" is not just thrown in there. Theres a slot glued inside of the cover where it slips in and out perfectly.

Just finished my first listen. There's some pretty great tracks on there, didn't love all of them though.. But that just might be because of the original album, never liked it too much. Those Thou tracks slay nonetheless.

And yeah here's a picture of that 7" storage thingy inside of the sleeve. loving the idea of that.

Glad the 7" pocket doing ya right, was a bit tricky to work well but should be cool!

We will have some standard copies online, the plan is Sat evening but TBC. Shortly after RSD at some point though, is the idea at least.

Canadian stores do have copies via F.A.B. Distribution but I have been unable to get a list.

Should have a list of U.S. shops relatively soon!

Please note: this list is likely incomplete and we weren't able to get a list of stores in other countries: although Canada and Europe should be reasonably covered.

If you can: PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL STORES! This is an important day for retail shops, and Record Store Day really helps local businesses who bust ass year-round to get tunes to those who enjoy them.

Everyone anywhere else: we plan to have a 'standard' edition of the "Whatever Nevermind" release available online shortly after RSD. Ideally, Saturday evening but TBC. Keep an eye on our site and Online Store then, we will have a LOT of new items available in addition to the "Whatever Nevermind" album. A full list of new titles will get posted on our main page. www.roboticempire.com

Thank you!!

No info on the distribution of how-many-copies-per store, I imagine Revolver tried to cover as many outlets as possible with the stock they received. Also...:

Pygmy Lush's cover of Nirvana's "On A Plain" is now premiering at NPR's All Songs Considered, along with some cool and kind words about the song and release. Here's a segment:

"...where the band's cover of "Serve The Servants" reflected the quieter folk songs found on 2008's Mount Hope, this version of "On A Plain" exercises the band's sonic capabilities to such an effect that the song becomes Pygmy Lush's own."

"Whatever Nevermind" is out TOMORROW on vinyl as part of Record Store Day, and digitally across all major music platforms.

Feels surreal, but "Whatever Nevermind" is now out there. The vinyl is widespread across retail shops today as part of Record Store Day, and a 'standard' mailorder version will become available this evening in our online store ( http://www.roboticempire.com/store).

Noisey has a stream up of the full album ( http://noisey.vice.com/blog/whatever-nevermind) and the digital version of the release is now available via iTunes and Bandcamp as well:

Thank you and jah bless!
