Zappa's One Size Fits All 2015 Reissue - And more to come

Recommended Posts

Any Zappa fans here? Doesn't seem like there's many Zappa threads or even comments around here, for that matter...

Anyway, for those interested, the Zappa estate is apparently embarking on a "major series of reissues", starting with "One Size Fits All" on 180 gram, with an August 14th release date:

I haven't been able to find any type of pre-order link listed anywhere, or really, any other information regarding the August 14th release; just a few news articles all essentially parroting the same information. Seems odd that the release is only two weeks away, and yet there's no pre-order available. I wouldn't be too surprised if this doesn't make the 14th date...

For those who might be interested in getting into Zappa:

He has a very large catalog of music (not all of it necessarily good, IMHO), that spans many different genres, and can be extremely intimidating to newcomers as to where to begin. One Size Fits All is an excellent starter point; one of my favorites of his. The silliness and shenanigans are kept in check, relatively, with more emphasis on the music and instrumentals. Excellent melodies and tracks from beginning to end.

Aside from earliest Verve pressings of his first record and a few later things that came out during the CD era there is nothing by Zappa that is especially scarce, unless your looking for odd international pressings. Most of his records, 60s through 80s, can be found for less than $10. This is not to say that he didn't make a lot of great records. He did. He sold a ton of records in his day, too. He was very popular. His records just aren't rare.

Skip the reissues and buy 'riginals from Discogs or at your local shop.

"I get by because of the people who make a special effort to shop here – mostly young men – who spend all their time looking for deleted Smith singles and original, not rereleased – underlined – Frank Zappa albums. Fetish properties are not unlike porn. I’d feel guilty taking their money, if I wasn’t… well… kinda one of them."

One Size Fits All is my current favorite of his studio albums... that distinction changes from time to time, but I've been stuck on this one for a couple of years.
I picked up an original Hot Rats a couple years ago and was floored by how different it sounded from the CD I was used to growing up.

I heard that FZ re-recorded the bass and drums for the CD re-issues of many of the Warner Brothers albums.

He claimed the tapes “deteriorated” over the decades, and did not like the way the master tapes sounded in those frequencies.

Do love me some Frank, but I just cannot drop a cent on any new represses, merch, etc due to the bullshit that the ZFT has pulled with Dweezil. So disgusting!

I was originally outraged, but ultimately realized there was no way I was going to get all the details behind the feud or be able to take a side with an informed opinion.  Dweezil's blog post in May made me hopeful they've reached a resolution:

"Recently, we Zappa siblings (Diva, Ahmet and Dweezil) got together with the goal of resolving our differences. Once we sat down and actually listened to one another, we found a much greater understanding of each other's intentions.  We regret that our communication broke down and that things were misconstrued. It may be a bumpy road at times - we are a passionate Italian family - but we have decided to work toward privately discussing issues rather than using public forums and lawyers.

We are hopeful that if any of our father's fans have felt conflicted, they can join us in the peace of our resolution.  With our best feet forward, we are moving ahead and will faithfully deliver much more of our father's indefinable brilliance, also known as the "World's Finest Optional Entertainment."

Thank you for your passion and love for our father.  We can assure you, we all feel the same about him."
