guess im in the minority in thinking that the two new songs sound like a fairly logical continuation from where the band left off after 17 years.

I agree with this. I think they just sound a little to polished and 2-dimensional. I'd rather the production have stayed at least a little more raw and natural sounding like In/Casino/Out.

thats fair, i suppose. when relationship of command came out, i thought it was a lot more polished than their previous records though so i guess i wasnt really expecting that at this point either.

Yeah, ROC does have a bit too much polish but there's still a good amount of energy in the performances. I was just hoping they wouldn't take the polish to the level of modern audio production polish which is sickening. I'd like to hear this album mixed closer to I/C/O since there has been a lot of work done like that since then. Unfortunately it sounds like they're going for the major label sound.

~Agree with this. The songs are alright. Not really that special, but not terrible. It's about what I would expect from the band after all these years. But the production totally kills any remaining excitement. Those songs sound really squashed and thin. I'm sure youtube streaming compression doesn't help, but I'm not expecting the vinyl to sound leaps and bounds better. The songs just seem lifeless.

Exactly! And so much music is mixed this way. It makes me laugh when people were bitching in 1993 that In Utero sounded "shitty" and "low quality" and I'm over here like, "that's what sound sounds like. They aced that shit." People are afraid of real sound.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but I'm in bewilderment seeing how people are going shitballs over this preorder. And I'm actually curious about people's affection with 2017's edition ATD-I, considering the shitfest of a reunion tour, Cedric's bedazzling personal development as a somewhat public figure and the gaping hole in creativity and actual correlation to their heyday that is Jim Ward being completely absent. Is it old affection to the name? Or did you guys enjoy all the Volta and whatnot records of recent years? Did you see them play and they were the legitimately best thing ever? Do you hate Jim Ward?!

It kinda still hurts saying this, considering how much I adore all their original output, but I'm not looking forward to this, because there's nothing about it to get me excited. It's not that I'm sure the record is gonna blow. Antemasque didn't, kinda. But not a single member of ATD-I (minus Ward, but..) put out anything exciting in 14 years, for me, personally. Also skipping through some videos of their recent touring really showed just how much youthful energy they put into their recordings, and how unable they are today to reproduce any of that.

To say that Omar and or Cedric haven't done anything exciting in 14yrs kinda sounds like you're not a fan of Omar's music. Granted I'm a bit biased as i fucking Love the Mars Volta. They've made some damn awesome stuff. Frances is spectacular (probably better than deloused for me) Amputechture is great. even Noctourniquet was great album. And then there's all of Omar's other music and solo stuff. Sure not everything is great, but god damn he's had some fucking awesome albums. Maybe you only ever really liked At the Drive In, I know some Volta fans that never really liked them. or people who love them and never got into Volta too much.

I'm not saying everything Omar does is great, or am expecting this album to be spectacular. But it's gonna be fun. sure it's not as awesome as RoC was, but that was almost 20yrs ago. Cedric can't sing the same anymore, they're older guys. but to me, these 2 songs sound like a natural progression of where they left off. with some time in between. But yes, i will agree that it does sound a bit too polished. but hey, it is what it is. I'm excited to finally hear new music from them, in any form.

and actually they're live shows last year were ridiculously awesome. their energy was incredible, the crowd was insane from start to finish (which is exactly what i wanted) and they sounded super tight too. definitely exceeded my expectations.

Does anyone have recommendations on where to start with Omar's solo work? I'm a big fan of ATDI and TMV's first two records, but ORL's output seemed so daunting. Might listen to Crystal fairy later today.

please listen at least to the bedlam in goliath and noctourniquet again. if not amputechture and octahedron. TMV is a once in a generation type band.

Try this:

https://www.discogs.com/artist/1408893-El-Grupo-Nuevo-De-Omar-Rodriguez-Lopez

it's kind of cheating, as it has Cedric and Juan, so it's a nice bridge. I really like the album, i'd say it's not as melodic as the first two TMV.

I personally wouldn't recommend starting with Crystal Fairy. not that it's terrible, but not that great especially as a starting point. i'd start with the following

Cryptomnesia, Xenophanes, Old Money, Calibration, Omar and John Frusciante, Un Escorpion Perfumado

he's currently in the process of releasing a new album every 2 weeks from this past june, up till this coming up June. 24 albums. so much to choose from but these are good ones form that series so far.   Sworn Virgins, Aranas en la Sombra, Cell Phone Bikini

Start with that

Wow, I hadn't heard that he had extended it to 24 albums. That's crazy.
