Mid Year Review

Recommended Posts

Coming up to half way through 2017 what music's been floating your boat? What have been your favourite  tracks and albums released this year? What stuff have you slept  on from previous years and just got into? What have you revisited and found a new appreciation for? What albums are you looking forward to?

Looking through my collection I need some new stuff to check out I have only purchased 3 albums released this year:

Pallbearer - Heartless

Yith - Dread

Pillorian - Obsidian Arc

I have gotten back into Earth in a big  way mainly the Angels of Darkness... I & II albums, as well as The Bees made Honey... these have been on high rotation.

No release date yet, but they released a statement in Morse code saying that it was "nearing completion" back in  April. Engineered by Noah Landis (Neurosis).

Stoked about it.

Hahaha what a ridiculous way to announce a new album, can't wait though!

Looking For An Answer

Unearthly Trance

Majeure

Disharmonic Orchestra (...well, it's from 2016 but I got it in January)

What's the Unearhtly Trance like? haven't listened to anything of theirs since The Trident. I always liked their doomy moments more that the faster passages.

Checked out the Slowdive, a lot of people seem to love it.

Will have to give it some more time thought Sugar For The Pill was the standout track, overall I was probably hoping for Souvlaki II but it sounds a lot less lush and a little more depressive on first listen. certainly worth a repeated listen though...

So far I have been really liking these albums:

Black Lips - Satan's Graffiti or God's Art?
Cory Branan - Adios
Crusades - This Is a Sickness and Sickness Will End
Drab Majesty - The Demonstration
Incendiary - Thousand Mile Stare
Iron Reagan - Crossover Ministry
Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
Slowdive - Slowdive
Western Addiction - Tremulous

These singles and EPs were pretty good too:

Crisis Man - Crisis Man
Gouge Away - Shallow / Sweat
Search - Between the Lines

I liked those first two Portugal. The Man singles, but still need to hear the entire album before I add it to the list. The new Cock Sparrer album will likely be up there after a few more listens too.

The stuff I slept on last year that I got into a lot more this year are:

Burn - ...From the Ashes
Gouge Away -  , Dies
Praise - Leave It All Behind

I can thank Paint It Black for that. That Gouge Away album is such a ripper and the other two EPs grew on me even more this year.

I am looking forward the new Boris and Burn albums. I wasn't amazed by that first Boris track that was released but still have high hopes for the album.

The biggest disappointment so far for me was the new At the Drive-In album. It hasn't really stuck for me and find myself zoning out through most of it.

Man I've really been slacking in my metal albums this year, I really need to get into Pallbearer and Elder and I need to here the new All Them Witches.

I've really only been listening to Hip-Hop this year, my favorites are:

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.

Big Sean - I Decided

Joey Bada$$ - ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$

Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog

All the singles Frank Ocean has dropped this year, specifically Chanel

Run The Jewels - RTJ3 (AOTY)

Disappointments:

Thundercat - Drunk

Mastodon - Emperor of Sand (actually not horrible, but Show Yourself is just such a horrible song)

Gorillaz - Humanz

I'm just patently waiting for June 23rd for the New Vince Staples record, probably my most anticipated release this year. Also anticipating the new Sleep album and I heard we're getting a new Corrosion of Conformity record with Pepper back in the band, so I'm excited for that.

Best shows: Coheed And Cambria at the Observatory

Vince Staples at the Observatory

Thursday w/Touché Amoré at the Wiltern

Sleep at the Fonda

I loved it but I reckon there might a little too many mid-tempo parts for your liking.

If you liked doomier UxTx you should definitely check out their side-project Serpentine Path with the bassist from Electric Wizard/Ramesses.

However you can stream this new album here:

AOTY so far: Full of Hell - Trumpeting Ecstasy

Most excited for: Converge (They haven't said 2017, but they were recording it a month or two ago....so hopefully a Fall/Winter release.

My biggest disappointment is that I don't even care that TWIABP are probably putting out LP3 this year
