skycriesmary
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Pro-Ject carbon for $299, and am wondering if those who have had this model have noticed much of a difference upon upgrading from the felt mat it comes with. My ears are ok, but far from audiophile. Tinnitus has taken a toll. If so, what did you upgrade to, and what were the differences?
thesewoodenideas
Get a cork mat. Pro-ject do one themselves. A lot less static and better sound are the benefits I noticed after making this change. Velocity of Sound
youspinmeround
Just get the acrylic platter. No need for a mat and better platter NewVinylGuy
skycriesmary
Thanks for the feedback, I'm very green as far as components and hardware. I would like the best bang for the buck in upgrades under $100.
faaip de oiad
I believe the acrylic platter upgrade is about a hundred
Velocity of Sound
A $10 cork mat is all you'll need.
skycriesmary
Lots of different opinions, as expected. Still not sure...
Timthevinylguy
Not that I have the same table but I love my leather mat. Tried cork along with the factory rubber and leather sounds the best to me but every table is different. Its cheap and easy to try cork as you can get one of the 12" squares form almost any hardware store and just cut it to shape.
Tardcore
had a debut carbon and got the acrylic platter. huge improvement. skycriesmary
allenh
An acrylic platter on any table but if cost is an issue then you can also get acrylic mats, for my ears cork is good but not as good as acrylic skycriesmary
skycriesmary
Thanks for all the feedback. Have you all seen these get much lower than $299?
NapalmBrain
Gonna just echo and say get the acrylic platter not sure what the exact cost is as I bought an open box esprit for $489 and it came equipped but I have friends with the standard pro-ject and the acrylic is night and day, it's going to lower your surface noise considerably
skycriesmary
Funny, I ended up getting a 3 month old Debut Carbon DC with the acrylic platter for $380 off ebay from someone who was just gifted the esprit.
vinyl addict
I'd search for a different turntable, unless you are aware of the Debut's common hum issue. Also, the Ortofon Red cart is well known for sssssssibilance issues.

I agree with thw 2M red point and I've heard that about the DC but maybe they ironed that out no excessive hum here, I wonder if so many new owners just dont know how to properly attach a grounding clip. Also could be the speedbox stabilizing the current better on mine *shrug*

Also, it sounds like the OP is buying an older one as he's paying $299.
NewVinylGuy
I use the acrylic platter without a mat. not sure if there is a deference, but it looks great. In all honesty I would save a few more pennies and get the Esprit model. It has speed control and the upgraded platter.

I'll receive it on Wednesday, we'll see about the hum issue. vinyl addict

youspinmeround
The Hum issue appears to have been resolved but is caused by a screw in the mounting plate that can easily be removed and not effect performance
skycriesmary
Thanks for all the feedback, I'll update after I've spun a few albums. Looking forward to giving the new release of Decade a good listening, as well as The Downward Spiral and Moon Shaped Pool.
