Freak Genes - Qwak Qwak LP

If you distilled the late-’70s explosion of punk rock into a single mixtape that incorporated the pop side, the garage side, and the experimental noise side, Freak Genes would be that mixtape made flesh.

Freak Genes is the child of Andrew Anderson and Charlie Murphy, brought into this world to make fun music. Charlie has survived bands like Red Cords, Holiday Ghost and M.Rutt, while Andrew is a veteran of Proto Idiot, the Marble Vanity and the Hipshakes.

The idea behind Freak Genes is to take all the weird ideas deemed too dysfunctional for their other outlets and create something interesting. Their original inspiration was the Raincoats LP Odyshape. So far, they sound nothing like that.

In 2017 Freak Genes released their first 12” LP Playtime on Alien Snatch records. That album has 16 tracks, and throws together all kinds of garage rock crappola to make quick, catchy songs. Live shows followed in the UK and Mainland Europe, featuring an all-star band of best pals from the Black Tambourines, the Hipshakes and the Be Positives.

Since then, Charlie and Andrew have discovered synthesisers and drum machines. The result is Qwak Qwak, a bumper collection of 17 songs, which, if we’ve done our maths right, makes it 6.25% better than their debut. Its angrier and more awkward but still has hooks. They hope you like it.

Fashionism - Smash Singles LP
**Comprising the 4 long sold out 7"s that came out on Dirt Cult, Hosehead, Neon Taste and Zaxxon Records, to coincide with their upcoming European tour**

Subculture is dead. The kids, they don’t care any more about your niche interests. Punk, glam, bubblegum, mod, soul, rock’n’roll, it’s all the same. The battle lines are down and everything’s up for grabs. Didn’t you hear? Pop ate itself.

Luckily Vancouver’s Fashionism know all about that. They may sing mournfully of a time when “nobody used words like vintage or retro”, but despite all this 'end of an era' stuff they’re also smart enough to know that the only time that ever matters is here and now. So yeah, this is a finger food buffet of all your old favourites (the Rezillos, The Boys, the bits of The Jam that don’t make you think of how Weller turned out and do a little sick in your mouth) but they only deal in their own prime cuts, as this timely singles collection demonstrates.

Stop, Drop, Rock ‘N’ Roll is a lost new wave/powerpop classic, like the getaway music The Jags would make after drunkenly trying to ramraid a bank but hitting a library by mistake. One Shot feels like the hit of adrenaline that only kicks in when you hear a truly perfect chord change or feel the cord snap during a bungee jump. Then there’s Smash The State (With Your Face), a self-explanatorily titled slice of paradise that deploys some serious boogie. They’re all winners.

Should you expect any less from members of Vancouver heroes like The Tranzmitors and The Jolts (among others)? Probably not. So fuck your expectations, fuck your subculture, fuck your niche. This is music to drink meths to at the top of a rollercoaster, and it’s the soundtrack to the summer we all deserve. Like it even matters that it’s spring.
Will Fitzpatrick.

Fashionism - Come On My Baby 7"
If you’re wondering when this year’s endless ice age will finally to an end, you should probably turn your attention to the new 7” from Vancouver powerpop specialists Fashionism. Hot on the heels of their recent Smash Singles compilation, it’s another serving of buzzsaw hooks and hot glam mess, and it’ll sounds like someone refilled a reservoir with ice-cold Mountain Dew, sherbet and pages ripped out of Ian Svenonius’ unpublished Make-Up memoirs.

You like new wave? You dig Mott The Hoople? You love that sensation of driving too fast around a corner before your car flips over, spills from the road and lands in a bed of candyfloss? Fashionism do all of this while giving off the distinct impression they’re ready to lead a revolution – and they dress pretty damn sharp too.
Come On My Baby picks up where the singles comp left off, all pace and melody and intravenous sugar, while Baby She’s Gone is a softer but no less enticing groove – more in keeping with their glam side than their punk side, although it all suits ‘em down to the ground.

Need more proof that the humble 45 is the perfect portable format for punk (and pop, for that matter)? Here’s more evidence to support your case. Pogo party in the courtroom, who’s coming?
Will Fitzpatrick.

Split label release with Neon Taste.
