Seen this a couple of times.  I wouldn't say COMMON practice but it happens

It definitely happens, that’s how I found the empty box to the blink-182 box set at my local store for free! Took it and put my existing blink collection in it.

yeah, definitely doesn't seem to be the case because this was the only album from the box sitting there (tons of people were picking through this particular row too, new arrivals) and would have definitely seen the other albums sitting there as well since they are much less desirable then TTTYG, and very much in print.

I think someone probably traded in a fragmented box set (grave included) and some severely undertrained employee marked it at the fractured price of ~$200, which was the retail price of the box.

either way, no complaints.
