One of my favorite moments on  first-pass. Funny & weird enough to trip me up.

 

While I didn't make it all the way through the album, I liked what I heard well enough. Interesting sonics, lots of personality & bite. Arrangements & production reminded me in an indirect way of 80s Tom Waits. But my tolerance for poison pen catharsis is limited, so the tight lyrical focus on personal blood-letting wore me down after a while.

 

Speaking strictly as a white, indie incel from the mid-aughts...

Great stuff. Crafty. She can do anything, and she does just about everything on this album. I found it a bit tiring to listen to, mainly because the drums were generally following the vocals.  It’s like Tune-Yards, but way more matured.  Two memorable spots: Shameika dropped out pre-chorus (2:10) and Ladies when talking about the dress the ex left behind.   Can’t wait to listen again.

idk i think "you raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in" is pretty memorable but maybe thats just me

On the album, she calls out sexual abusers, controlling men who purposefully poison relationships between women, grade school bullies, and her band for taking their instruments out of her house once and each one feels equally cathartic and blistering.

The more I listen the more I'm upset that Pfork didn't give it a 11.

Her last album released 8 years ago also received critical acclaim - this has nothing to do with the lack of releases - the only notable April/May releases pushed back where Lady Gaga Sam Smith Haim and Dixie Chicks - would not have had any affect on whatever hype or acclaim this album is receiving

FTBC is head and shoulders above anything else Fiona has written... for me anyway.  I know Idler is held in high regard but I don’t find it half as interesting, even revisiting it in light of recent Fiona appreciation.  I think this new album is one of those cases where something can be overhyped but still really enjoyable.
