Motor whirring on Ion Max LP

I know the Ion Max is not anything special, but it works for me. I was playing around with the player since the Autostop was not working (turntable not stopping at end of album) when after one of my attempts to re-attach the band, the motor started making a frankly god aweful sound and the whole platter was vibrating. Removing the platter and the sound/vibration continued. An RPM test showed not only is it now running slow, but also at an uneven speed. Help! Frankly, I am not the position to buy even another Ion, but will have a go at attempting to fix my mistake. An added note: the bit underneath the player where one can adjust the speed is a bit off-centre from the base cover, so getting in there with even the thinnest screwdriver i have is almost impossible, so might have to take that off too.
