floyd_z
This reminds me of the Neil Young After the Gold Rush 50th anniversary. It's just the album, a 7" and a litho for $100. I love Neil, but such an easy pass.

I briefly glanced at the artist’s webstore and saw a bunch of different pieces with the same crystal aesthetic (note: all showing sold out). I’m curious if the clear LPs are actually held inside the art piece or not? Also wondering if the clear LPs ship separately from the crystal cover? Perhaps I’m overthinking all of this. You are, it will be in a regular jacket with the crystals printed on it. Otherwise there would be another zero on the price.
Derek™
The only way $100 and one year of waiting would be justifiable, in my opinion, is if the jacket was made of some extra dense cardboard (or plastic) that housed the LPs, and featured 3D printing to achieve the same emboss and depth effects featured in the mockup. Would actually be really impressive to have the clear LP peeking through the damaged bits. IndigoHollow

Feels stupid participating in a 1 year PO but..i also hate myself so it works out. lots can happen in a year, excited for the ride ahead lmfao plz kill me
vinyldestination
only reason they've put the PO up now is 'cause they want to cash in on the 'anniversary edition' while they can IndigoHollow
drewberinger
It’s probably shipping in a year because almost everything is gonna take a year

booms528
What an absolute scam to tell people there will only be 1,000 and charge that much and then change your mind... not to mention the ridiculous lead time. That being said, i ordered a black copy. 🤷♂️

The same sports card industry that went bust because they were selling "limited" cards that were secretly being produced in unlimited quantities? If I didn't know any better, I'd say that sounds a LOT like this situation. While I don't think this is a sign of the vinyl industry bubble bursting, I do think it's absurd to pay that much for a record - especially for someone like The Weeknd, whose middle-of-the-road pop music won't be remembered as anything but middle-of-the-road pop music in 20 years. timsimmons
If “the bubble” bursts for anyone, it’s speculators. People who buy records because they live music and want physical things will be fine. They know what they bought. CeCeCe

fish
Looks like they sold over 21k of the $100 version in the 2 days that they were available.
twatay
A cool couple million in revenue in 48 hrs from a special edition PO that has a year long lead time...that is pretty crazy.
Shelby
Ah, they charged so much because they knew they'd have to face the wrath of reddit rubes who started collecting during the pandemic. This release was stupid but imagine being like this in real life. Yes, fucking Universal are doing this as a ploy to steal your money for no product. FUCK NEW VINYL BUYERS. I don't give a shit if 1 in 10 isn't insufferable and a burden on the hobby I'd rather nobody new start collecting from here on out. Close the registration button IRL and give it 5 years to settle. Fuck.

floyd_z
LOL, I'm sure the FTC will be all over this, probably have people working in shifts. Edited March 26, 2021 by floyd_z typo ntslash, CeCeCe and OneThreeOneTwo 2
timsimmons
Yeah, I don’t get the whining about it. But also I’m not precious about things not being limited or limited-ness changing. CeCeCe
Shelby
At the end of the day it WAS shady but Jesus. To want both a refund and the record is fucking insane. CeCeCe, OneThreeOneTwo and timsimmons

fish
Nobody deserves anything for free, but UMG isn't helping themselves. They were responding to some cancellation requests in the first 1k orders telling people that they would still get the album as an apology. But now they are telling people that there was a misunderstanding and that isn't going to happen. twatay
