julien
I recently put a Nagaoka MP-110 on my Pro-Ject debut carbon to replace my original Ortofon Red. Overall very happy about it, love how it sounds. It is very prone to clicks which is unfortunate, but I'm starting to think that it may be due to a bad setup. I noticed it was running low but didn't overthink it, until I noticed some scratches on a record. the cartridge ends up touching records that are not completely flat which is super worrisome. Any idea of what may be happening? I balanced the tone-arm and also used a scale. Tried a few settings between 1.5 and 2 with no luck. I don't remember my Ortofon retracting at all when touching a record, while Nagaoka's stylus goes in. Is it normal? You can also find a video here, Thank you! hoytis
Yes, I've heard the MP110 runs low. Way lower than most carts. That's normal. But to the point of touching records? Something is wrong. They are heavier than other carts, so did you recalibrate the counterweight on the tonearm...first balancing, then setting the downforce weight appropriate for the Carbon, something like 17.5g I think. julien
Thanks for responding. I recalibrated everything and double checked with a scale for accuracy. It seems to be an issue with the VTA which isn't adjustable on the debut carbon. Trying a thinner mat first and hope it'll make a little difference. hoytis
You could also try using a weight/clamp if you don't already. They help with flattening vinyl (and dampening).
julien
Pro-Ject USA just got back to me and told me it's a VTA issue indeed and that their upcoming VTA IT should help with it https://www.hifinext.com/vta-it-will-help-you-adjust-the-height-of-the-tonearm-in-pro-ject-players/ They expect to have it in US stores by mid-June.
