Marionetttes
Hello, wanted to know if it is wise to play stereo records on monaural record player and how long it would last, and if not is there a stereo cartridge for mono?
Squard
Nah you'll damage your records like that, the needle is different. Haven't heard of a stereo adapter cartridge for a mono record player, either, but I won't say they don't exist.
scottheisel
I'm wondering this myself, as I'm currently having a mono jukebox being restored and wondering if I can play stereo records in it or not.
Boaty McBoatface
Here’s a good discussion on the topic: https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=68073 The gist is that a mono cartridge can’t move in two dimensions like a stereo cartridge, and will accelerate groove wear on a stereo record. Like Squard said, no unfortunately. The needle on a mono player moves differently than on a stereo player and can damage the grooves. I remembered reading something about it before. The link below is not what I remembered but it says the same thing. https://vinylrestart.com/are-vinyl-turntables-stereo/ Edit: looks like Boaty beat me to it, but two sources are better than one, right?
