kc7700
Hello, just joined and looking for advice and suggestions please. I have a pretty good amount of old record albums as well as many 45s that are from the 60s and 70s, what is the best way to organize them? Right now the 45s are in boxes and the LPs are stacked together. Any suggestions, thanks!
chevy8
For the LPs, I use something like this from IKEA (you can find similar from other stores too), but on its side (4 wide, 2 tall). Each section is just large enough for LPs and it works out pretty well.

HardlineKid
Alphabetically by artist, then chronologically within the artist Corgipants

MCDELTAT
By decreasing size, then by artist alphabetically, then by release date. I'm only slightly obsessive. Corgipants
gregor
This might be controversial, but I start by grouping by similar genre (Punk/Hardcore, Metal/Black Metal etc, Disco/Funk/Soul, House/Electronic etc. etc.) then sort by artist/chronological. JohnMatrix
I do similarly. I have shelves for my metal records and then shelves for everything else. Then it is alphabetical phillybhatesme
[Banned User]
Sadly, this is the toughest part, but the most ACCURATE way is to listen to all of them and then sort by BPM. This may take a while, but your sorting will be the most accurate. Thank you. phillybhatesme, ditc586 and gregor 1
phillybhatesme
Like most others have said, I have my metal and hardcore in alphabetical order by artist. Albums are just kinda flung in there in an attempt to be alphabetical, but I do quite like the chronological aspect of sorting by release date. I have a shelf for classical, a shelf for jazz, and boxes of random shit. Oh, there are also some random hip hop albums in with the metal and hardcore like Nas, ATCQ, Wu, Beastie Boys. nate_8907
the best way is to buy pushpins and decorate your walls with your records and throw the sleeves away. mitchard

But...why? Those are such different genres, why wouldn't you just have a hip-hop/r&b section? For OP (though I think this is a silly question to ask): I sort by genre->alpha by artist->release date. Genre divisions are: Pop punk/emo Metal/punk/hardcore Modern - indie/pop/rock Hip-hop/r&b Funk/soul/blues Country/bluegrass Classic - rock/pop Ambient/drone/soundtrack Then I have separate sections for 10" and 7" IndigoHollow

All my classical and jazz has been from thrift stores and hand-me-downs. It makes sense to me lol. I guess I should have put it this way: The records I listen to most (90% metal and hardcore) are all stored under the amp and TT. Shelves contain the used jazz and classical. cardiac
This one of those real ‘peek behind the curtain’ threads, and I’m here for it. I think phillybhatesme is on the right track: organize by genre if it makes sense with your storage, but feel empowered to invent your own umbrella-categories based on how you listen. Folks above are discussing whether to lump punk & metal together, but maybe you think it’s insane to have a ‘jazz’ section because “how could you even put hard bop next to fire music?!?” or whatever. Just find an arrangement that’s true to what you love about the music.
Fowty Dollaz
They should be vertical/ upright. I usually put the spine outward, so I am able to read the artist and album name. If they are in containers, I also store them upright but in a way that I can flip to what I want.
phillybhatesme
One thing that...definitely drives me up the fucking wall with the spine, alphabetizing, etc. I have my A's on the right and Z on the left. Pic - https://i.imgur.com/F8aUwBH.png If A is on the left...idk, it seems like the fucking covers are facing the wrong way. daegor and faaip de oiad 1
Corgipants
I'm in the group by size, then alpha by artist, then chronologically school of thought. However I have my soundtracks/va albums in a separate cube with my 10" and 7" where they go depreciating by size, then alpha by title/artist, and chronologically. Dub
I do the alphabetical and then chronological, but I separate studio albums from live/compilation albums then separate them chronologically.
