The best way to learn is practice practice practice. And your best tool aside from effectively learning the programs is having a good eye for composition and detail. When I first got into that stuff I just tried everything in Photoshop and Illustrator to see what they do/are capable of doing. It just familiarized myself with everything for the most part.
