At first I looked up songs with bass lines that I really liked and took a shot at learning those. I also took a few lessons from a friend, but I was able to to pay him with trades. good luck! If you can learn half the basslines that James Jamerson played, you'll be a good bassist. #1 example: "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5.
