Best/Worst Customer Service from a Distro/Label?

UPDATE: so I ended up opening a PayPal dispute cause I don't even want the damn record at this point, now they're actually offering to help but only if I close the dispute first 😂

This has happened to me too. Smaller labels have left me on radio silence after many messages, but once I open the dispute they suddenly respond. They’ve also tried the ‘I can only help you after you’ve closed the dispute’ which is just ridiculous and incorrect. You can help me right now, actually. And when you make it right, I’ll end the dispute. Nah, they don’t like that. 🤷‍♂️

Had a really great experience with Southern Lord. Managed to get one of the Engine Kid boxsets online, sent over to New Zealand, but found issues with two of the discs. Southern Lord as the label are sending me two new discs, with no charge, all the way over here - even refused me offering to help pay for shipping. So great, big recommendation for them.

Not sure if they've already been mentioned but I couldn't see anything from a quick search, but Specialist Subject Records over here in the UK are a superb distro. I couldn't recommend them enough, they're very helpful and always have a great range of stock of predominately punk/emo/hardcore/metal records. They're also a great label too with some banging releases over the years.

Not the worst and I feel like I dodged a bullet, but the mailers Rad Girlfriend Records uses are atrocious. Some of the thinnest mailers I think I've ever seen. My last order came a little dinged up, but records were fine, so I can roll with it. But definitely less inclined to place orders with them if I'm at risk of getting bend up vinyl 😕

How good are the vendors you order from on communicating with you when a pre-order has been delayed? I get that there is a massive delay on vinyl production right now but there are pre-orders that I have that are 3 or 4 months late and I have no earthly idea when they are getting here.

I would say more than half of my delays haven't been communicated to me. I usually check Discogs to see if my variant or other variants are online before emailing but if it's months past they need to say something. A few labels got their Paypal accounts shut down because of delays and not getting orders out within their original timeframe so that's another fun problem in the world of vinyl.

That sounds more like asshole customers that don't understand shit happens. Probably a poppunk label/release.

On topic, yeah labels suck at updating but they're also not being updated. It's quite rare for a label to just steal your money despite all the rampant fear.

Ordered a record from Heavy Psych Sounds US shop. When it arrived it was cracked. When i asked them for a replacement, they said i had to pay shipping, and it had to come from their EU shop... so the shipping cost was just as much as the record was worth even though they still had copies listed for sale in their US shop.  I paid it and now I haven't bought from them since.

Has anyone had issues with revHQ?  I ordered three records from their distro, and only two came.  I gave it a couple days to see if maybe it was two packages, but nope.  I emailed them, didn't get a response, emailed again, got a response they'd look into what they could do, and a week later they haven't said anything.

Never had an issue with them before, but this is kind of annoying..

I haven't ordered from Rev in several years, but never had an issue in what was probably 15+ orders. Bummer to hear they are giving you the run around.

Same.  I don't know how to prove I'm not "scamming" them.  I still have the packaging the two records came in, I'm 999999.9% a third gatefold album would not have fit.  Maybe I remake the package and take a pic of it with the label?

another one for FATBEATS.

STAY AWAY  from them. I've purchased from them over the years with little issue.  Pre ordered the ILL BILL glow in the dark last year and saw them post pics of the vinyl in hand last month, never got my copy. They don't respond to emails at all. Tracking just has the old 'USPS is waiting for the item'.  Was dumb enough to make another order for in stock items a month ago and same thing. No shipping, no response. Will have to go through CC now. AVOID.

I actually had a similar experience mid last year, but it came out positive.  I had pre-ordered the Ill Bill La Bella Medusa, glow in the dark and the test press (which is expensive).  After seeing pics of people receiving their copy, I still didn't get mine, except that old USPS tracking number.

I emailed them several times, and they finally responded that the parcel had shipped a long time ago, but apparently mine got lost.  However, they could resend me the glow in the dark.  I was concerned about the test press, because they only made 15.  Customer support then tells me that their supplier had an 'extra copy' of the test press, and would be able to send it.

I did eventually received my glow in the dark + the test press.

I'd just file a PayPal claim if they asked you to prove it.

Does anyone know how to get an order from No Sleep Records shipped? They haven't shipped my records from their end of the year sale (and they're already having another sale now.) I DM'ed them and they said "oh they're backed up at the distro." I reached out to Awesome Merch and they said to reach out to No Sleep.

It really depends what you bought. Check this link just in case something isn't done being pressed yet. https://nosleeprecords.com/pages/about-1

Last time I bought something in stock it took 1 month to ship which I thought was kind of dumb. Awesome Merch isn't exactly awesome in my experience.

I've never had an issue with them, I've ordered from them many times. I've also been able to contact them if I had an issue. For example, the last time or two I ordered from them was a Drain red/white/blue splatter lp and my record came chipped on the edge. It didn't affect playback but I obviously would prefer not to have a chipped record so I contacted them, they sent a replacement, and the replacement had a similar chip. Emailed them again and they just refunded me my order as they couldn't guarantee the rest weren't all chipped because they were sealed, so it is what it is with that pressing. I got two free records and sold one, so I would say their customer service was great.

Most of the bad ones were through small artists/labels on Bandcamp. I collect vaporwave which is pretty niche and most labels/artists are doing everything themselves, producing their own tapes and records, shipping themselves, etc etc. So I can't hate on them too much as for some, they're managing full time jobs along with making music/records/fulfilling orders, but some just drop the ball pretty badly and like take forever to ship things, never respond to emails, or don't ship things at all. I've had to file Paypal claims on a lot of items.

As far as shitty customer service, Down in the Valley has to be the worst as they accept ZERO responsibility for defective records. They'll only replace/refund records if it's an error on their part. ANY store I've bought from will, at the very minimum, replace or just ask to send the record back for a refund if the record itself is  defective, as in like there's a scratch on it or something affects play. Down in the Valley's policy is basically all sales final and no refunds/replacements unless it's their fault. I ordered an imported record from them once and it was sealed/brand new, but when I played it, the record itself had a scratch and would skip. Their policy on scratched/defective records is to "contact the manufacturer to get a replacement." So yeah like I was really going to call some random vinyl plant in Germany and try to get them to ship me a new record, lmao.

Gonna throw Joy Void in the hat for worst service I've gotten in a while. I'm a big fan of most of their releases, but I ordered one on cassette along with a leather keychain they had listed (because why not?) on 12-16. I hadn't received an update so I checked the order on 1-6 and it said shipped, but had no tracking information, I emailed them and asked what was up and they sent me a tracking number the following day. All good, but when I check the tracking it just shows they have printed the label and not actually mailed anything.....no big deal, i know times are tough so I let it sit there like that and never messaged them about it...until a week later they email me and say that the keychain is out of stock...so i respond and say how is this an issue, as I have already received tracking, and they give me the whole "we have just printed the label, that's just how the system works" etc. and they offer me a refund on the keychain and I take it. I also ask that they refund the shipping difference because it went up a few bucks when I added the keychain, to which they agreed. But, it's now been nearly a month since all of that went down and I still don't have the tape I ordered or a refund.
