Official Record Stores List (help us list them)

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I hit up Bullseye in Milwaukee and it is small, but overall pretty decent. they had a punk section but it was mostly Descendents, Black Flag, and Misfits stuff and mostly readily available. When I was about to check out I asked if he had any punk/hardcore 7" and he pulled out a box that had some cool shit, so make sure to ask to see that. Also, there was no "vibe" that can make record shopping not enjoyable.

Washington DC and the very nearby Virginia area:

CD Cellar

709 W Broad St.

Falls Church, VA. 22046

CD Cellar

2607 Wilson Blvd.

Arlington, VA 22201

What you'll typically find: A mix of everything, but mainly classic rock, jazz, country, oldies.

Great prices on their older albums. They also have newer items mixed in.

Record & Tape Exchange

9448 Main St.

Fairfax, VA. 22031

What you'll typically find: A mix of everything. The punk/hardcore/metal sections are small. They have a great $1 section though.

Great variety and the staff is nice, but the prices are kind of expensive.

Smash Records

2314 18th St. NW

Washington DC. 2009

What you'll typically find:Good deals!

Best place out of all the stores to find punk/hardcore albums. Not the biggest selection but they do have a good mix of old LPs and new releases.

Vienna Music Exchange

131 Church St. NW

Vienna, VA. 22180

What you'll typically find: Metal and classic rock.

The owner is super nice! He always has very fair prices. It's the smallest place you've ever seen as a store but it's one of the only places to find metal albums.

Melody Record Shop

1623 Connecticut Ave N.W.

Washington, D.C. 20009

I've only been there one time. I can't really remember what they had but I think it was mainly newer releases.

Crooked Beat Records

2318 18th St NW

Washington, DC 20009

I've never had any luck getting anything from Crooked Beat except the new Pearl Jam before it was released. Worth going to if you're at Smash Records (practically the same building).

Som Records

1843 14th Street NW

Washington, DC

Sorry, I don't remember anything about this store.

Red Onion Records & Books

1901 18th Street NW

Washington, DC 20009

You'll find high prices.

hey Kurtz, is beautiful world syndicate the guy that used to run a huge distro? I

think I remember him coming up here with his van packed of records for a Pg.99 show I did and he was from somewhere in PA. I found a ton of great stuff in his truck. Afterwards I did some trades with him through his website but I have since forgotten what the name of it was. I know he said he was opening a store in the future.

Jacksonville, FL

NO STORES :(

So you know, there ARE 3 stores in Jacksonville Florida. 2 are in a flea market, but ARE real stores. They are in Beach Blvd Flea Market and are divided off, and air conditioned - DooWops has used LP's - it's OK, Yesterday and Today is real good for older collectible stuff, neither carries new vinyl. The 3rd is at the Beach across from Aqua East on Atlantic Blvd. They pretty much carry new vinyl, and are real good so far - they don't have much, since they opened only a week ago, but say they are getting a lot more.

New Hampshire

Bull Moose Music

82-86 Congress Street

Portsmouth , NH 03801

Phone: 603-422-9525

Hours: 9AM - 11PM Daily

Open until 12:30 on Monday night

This is my 'go to' place. Everything from new and used cd's, vinyl, DVD's, video games, clothing, posters, and on and on....

Not to mention the random 'gems' that see to appear on a regular basis. I bought a copy of The Locust s/t album on vinyl and it turns out to be a white copy which is limited to 100 pieces and was mostly sold in Japan. Best $12 I've spent so far. ;D

Odyssey and Oracle

100 Albany Street

Portsmouth, NH 03801

Phone: 603-319-1656

This is nice little record shop that open only last April. They sell vinyl, cd's, tapes, books, vintage clothing, and even classic bicycles.

found a new one in West Palm Beach, FL this weekend

Top Five Records, Jay St (just off Lake Ave) in Lake Park. It's pretty much all older stuff, but he had some Porcupine Tree and a copy of Deja Entendu, among a few other things behind the counter.

Probably not worth a long trip unless you happen to be in the area.

Milwaukee

Rush Mor Records - http://www.rushmor.com/

Madison

B Side - http://www.b-sidemadison.com/

Ear Wax - http://www.earwaxwisconsin.com/

And there's a bunch of shops called Exclusive Company all over the state and they're all pretty nice.

I hit up Rushmor on friday. They have a small selection of vinyl, but it was almost all hardcore and punk which is sweet. Dude working there was real cool too. There will probably be something you want.

only jersey store i noticed was PREX and holdfast (unless i missed some in the thread) - princeton is really great; i haven't been to holdfast yet though it's only a matter of time since it's in asbury park..

but the other prominent stores are:

Vintage Vinyl

www.vvinyl.com

51 Lafayette Rd.

Fords, NJ 08863

Phone: 732-225-7717

basically neck and neck with Princeton Record Exchange in my opinion, Vintage Vinyl is more widely frequented and was SWAMPED on Record Store Day 2010, while I ended up at Princeton later in the day and PREX had a LOT more of the exclusives still left. i have picked up some great stuff at Vintage Vinyl though, including (randomly and almost accidentally) a copy of AC - Picnic of Love on vinyl, which made my day. also have instore performances pretty regularly.

Curmudgeon Records

31 West Main Street

Somerville, NJ

smaller shop but i found a couple things there the one time i went. it's a hike for me so it was more or less to survey the grounds. worth checking out though, especially if local.

Jack's Music Shoppe

30 Broad Street

Red Bank, NJ, 07701

Phone: (732)-842-0731

i've been here a bunch of times and found it pretty ho-hum as far as vinyl goes. they've got a ton of used, seemingly flea-market/yard sale quality used vinyl that i flipped through once or twice but never found anything remotely interesting. their new vinyl section is small, but seemed like it was on the increase last time i was there - usual suspects that people might be looking for on new vinyl (decent amount of GBV/pollard, VU, pavement, etc but nothing out of the ordinary).

--

off the top of my head that's about it, though i did want to mention that i'm going to TN this weekend and someone had mentioned Shangri-La previously, and that's on my list, but does anyone have any other good recommendations or reviews of places in the memphis or nashville areas? i've got a googled list, but if i could get any other ideas of where to go or maybe where to not bother going, it would save me some time.. thanks!

Someone was asking for Miami stores....Here you go!

Uncle Sam's Music (Miami Beach)

1141 Washington Ave.,

Miami Beach, FL 33179

http://unclesamsmusic.net

Uncle Sam's is down to 1 location (which is the original flagship store in Miami Beach (South Beach) on tourist-y Washington Ave. -- Pompano Beach and Lauderhill -- R.I.P) As a CIMS store, they have a good selection of mostly everything, typical pricing for a indie store. Staff knows their stuff, but unfortunately this location lends itself to lots of DJ and electronic music, that wastes tons of space where the rock records should be. They were great on RSD.

SWEAT Records

5505 NE 2nd Ave.

Miami, FL 33137

www.sweatrecordsmiami.com

Sweat is a nice little store, right next to the classic punk rock british pub Churchill's (the CBGB of the South). Nice atmosphere, so-so selection of new and used viinyl, over-priced. Staff isn't the most knowledgeable, but overall they're positive for a lackluster Miami music scene.

Yesterday and Today

9274 SW 40th St. (Bird Rd.)

Miami, Florida 33165

http://www.vintagerecords.com

When you want to bulk up your pre-90s rock, jazz, blues and psych collection, go to Y&T at Fair prices. Tons of vinyl, some new pieces (mostly reissues of classic releases) - CD's also. This is what record stores used to be...and really should still be (like Blue Note Records was in North Miami Beach).

my local store:

Vintage Vinyl

51 Lafayette Rd. • Fords, NJ • 08863

Phone: 732-225-7717

www.vvinyl.com

That place was awesome

When Brand New's "Daisy" was put up for preorder, my buddy Chris and I preordered it and they mailed us red wristbands which allowed us to go there and watch BN play for "free" and sign autographs. They didn't have the vinyl in stock then but they gave us posters to get signed. I talked to their manager Mike Sapone for about an hour which was absolutely awesome.

I say "free" because I drove us from Shepherdstown, WV to NJ which took about 4 hours haha. After BN played a 6 or 7 song set, he and I hung out to check out the vinyl which we found some gems in that huge collection, but an hour after BN and their fans left, Jesse Lacey walks out and flips through the record section right by us. We then talked to him for a good 30 minutes. He was looking for a record for his mom haha

In conclusion, that was a great time and a great place, but to end the night before the long drive, we ate at a White Castle which was about a mile from the shop.

That place is awesome

Also, here in Winchester, VA, we have Ear Food.

A shit ton of old albums that are overpriced because the owner doesn't keep up with current prices.

I found out after RSD '10 that he could have received plenty of RSD records, but didn't know about it so he didn't order it.

I wish I could buy that damn place!

I'm new around here, but I'm pretty surprised to see no mention of Toronto's shops in here so far, so here's my best stab at it:

Rotate This

801 Queen West

First place I bought a record in Toronto way back before I moved here, and still my go-to shop. Mostly new stuff, but with a healthy selection of used as well, and a decent selection of higher end collectibles. When it comes to new albums, you'll find a great selection of the entire spectrum of pop music here. Anything from pre-war blues and Americana, to obscure foreign garage rock collections, to the whole scheme of punk rock and all the new indie hits. A fairly scant selection of 7"s is the only drawback. I would say that this is the place to go if you can only hit one shop in the city, but as you'll find out below, that probably won't be an issue.

Hits and Misses

799 Queen West

The specialty shop for punk, hardcore and metal, though do reach outwards from there, especially when crawling into garage and psych territory. Equal parts new and used, with a solid wall of collectibles, and an extraordinary range of 7"s. Just moved next door to Rotate This a few days ago. A truly remarkable punk rock record shop which will probably be akin to what the demographic of this board is looking for.

Frantic City

799 Queen West (upstairs)

This is a used book/record shop that will be moving most of its records on top of the new Hits and Misses in the next week (this seems too good to be true, I know). From what I understand it will be focusing largely on 50s and 60s music, with a healthy dose of garage and psych. Not the biggest selection around by any means, but they have a very high percentage of quality stuff. Lots of 7"s, good selection of collectibles.

Sonic Boom

512 Bloor West

No doubt the biggest record store in the city, and it's open until midnight every day. When it comes to vinyl (the vinyl basement), this place is the jack of all trades, and master of none. Mostly new, mostly LPs. Has a bit of used stuff, very few collectibles, not many 7"s. Not an amazing selection of anything, but still worth checking out. I find you'll pay 20-50% more at this place for new stuff as a rule. The main floor is an enormous emporium of CDs. This is by far the best place to go for used CDs.

Soundscapes

572 College St

This place is almost entirely CDs, with a handful of vinyl on the shelves, and does nothing used at all. However, if you're looking for a CD, this is the best place. A huge spectrum of genres, and a great selection of the all. Also has a particularly impressive selection of box sets, as well as music related books and DVDs

She Said Boom

372 College (Downtown), 393 Roncesvalles (West End)

Smaller used record/book stores, but with with a particular attention to quality. Does a little bit of every genre pretty well. All LPs, no 7"s at all. Tends to have a solid selection of collectibles.

Ric's Collectibles

155 Main St.

This is the messy, dark, used shop for all things classic. You won't find much here under 20 years old, but it has a truly amazing selection. Very strong focus on collectibles. If you're looking for older stuff, particularly more popular groups, this is the place to go, though you'll pay for the rare stuff. Pretty far to the East end of the city, so if you're downtown, it's quite a trek.

Kops

229 Queen West

Pretty well rounded shop with primarily used stuff. Has an enormous selection of vintage 7"s. Solid range of collectibles, seems to have a particularly large selection of soul and funk.

These are my most frequent stops. I've spent quite some time writing these up, so I'll come back with some other ones later.

Great goddamn news!

My buddy and I were in Winchester, walking through the olde town mall where there are a couple bars, upscale restaurants, and shitty shops (except a few nice art shops)...aaannndddd

....there was a sign in front of the book store that read:

"Come in Friday between 6 and 8 and check out the opening for CHESTER RECORDS!"

I ran inside and jumped in front of George Washington to ask the clerk about it and he said, "Yeah..they're going to be selling new vinyl, about 100 will be in stock then slowly but surely there'll be more shipping in"

I smiled and said, "See you tomorrow!"

Cleveland:

Music Saves:

15801 Waterloo Rd. Cleveland OH 44110

http://musicsaves.com/

Pretty standard indie rock store, they carry mostly new stuff but they get in small-run/limited edition stuff weekly so they're worth going to. plus i work there a couple times a month, so i'm a little biased.

Hodad's Music International

13413 Madison Avenue Lakewood, OH, 44107

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lakewood-OH/Hodads-Music-International/102489856454225

Cleveland's best kept secret of a record store. All vinyl and in a tiny little room. It's horribly organized but they have a phenomenal selection. I'm pretty sure the fact that you have to dig around crates and piles (i'd say half the store is unorganized with 'new arrival' listed on the crate) makes it so the ebay guys steer clear and the folks willing to spend some time in there will find gems. The prices are moderate, the owner is more willing to price something high if it's a genre/band he really knows a lot about, so the more obscure/out of his general knowledge stuff goes for a steal a lot of the time.

My Mind's Eye Records

13727 Madison Avenue Lakewood, Ohio 44107

http://www.mymindseyerecords.com/store/

Phenomenal store/label that have been around for over a dozen years now. His specialty is definitely harder rocking stuff (punk, metal, classic hard rock) but carries weird experimental stuff and has an 'anything goes' sort of used vinyl section that is regularly stocked with records you just don't usually see used on shelves. It's walking distance from Hodad's... those two stores are usually a quick, fun weekend trip for me.

Blue Arrow Records and Books

16001 Waterloo Rd. Cleveland, OH 44110

http://www.bluearrowrecords.com/

This one's about a block from Music Saves. 95% of their stock is used vinyl. Their floor is made from old record covers. It's a really well put-together place... if you're looking for something in particular you won't have to dig around every corner of the place to find it (not my cup of tea, but...) They price things for what they're worth, but realistically so. It's not like some of the places in NYC or Chicago that just throw crazy prices on things just because a couple fanatics are willing to pay an exorbitant price.

Bent Crayon

11600 Detroit Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44102

http://www.bentcrayon.com/

Haven't been in this place in a while, but it's the place to go in Cleveland if you need something obscure and/or experimental on vinyl. As far as I know, his inventory is all new, no used sections.

CALIFORNIA

6400 Sunset Blvd. - Hollywood, Ca

Phone: (323) 245-6400 - This is the only Amoeba I've ever been to. Almost every time I go I find some great deals. The place is huge so you'll need to give yourself plenty of time. Lots of fairly priced vinyl to look through and pricey rarer items on the wall. EVERY kind of music.

Rockaway Records

2395 Glendale Blvd. - Los Angeles, Ca. 90039

Phone: (323) 664-3232 - This place specializes in rare classic rock. Tons of really rare Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. They keep their boxes of 7" behind the counter and you have to ask someone to get the box down that you want(punk, oldies, etc.) I didn't know this the first couple times I was there, so just a heads up.

Soundsations http://www.yelp.com/biz/soundsations-los-angeles

8701 La Tijera Boulevard

Los Angeles, CA 90045 - Near LAX, I've found some good stuff here, but not too much (a couple of color Fat). 7" selection is pretty small, LP selection is better, but not much.

Freakbeat

http://freakbeatrecords.com/

13616 Ventura Blvd.

Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

phone (818) 995-7603. - LP selection is pretty good, found some rare stuff for fair prices. Smaller place, but it's packed with stuff. Parking is meters only so bring change. One of the ONLY record stores I've ever been in that has a bathroom for customers.

Headline Records

7706 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA‎ - (323) 655-2125‎

Tiny place in a cool part of Hollywood. There use to be a lot of stores right here, Taang!, Vinyl Fetish. This is the only one left. Specializes in punk. LOTS of rare punk in here.

Penny Lane

1661 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA‎ - (626)

535-0949‎

Pretty decent. Only prob is that they are one of those places that puts the sticker right on the cover....bullshit! I have found some good stuff here....good mix of genres. One of the only places that advertises buying CDs and DVDs from them, copying them, and bringing them back for like 80% return. This is kind of odd except that I saw a lot of cool boot live DVDs...Dwarves, Misfits, etc.

You did a really nice job with this but I figured I'd do my own version of these and add a few more.

Amoeba Hollywood

6400 West Sunset Boulevard

Los Angeles, CA 90028

Refresh rate is very fast here with tons of new vinyl coming in all the time. Unfortunately they also know their stuff and pricing can run pretty steep on anything really worthwhile, but the flip-side to that is you can usually sell vinyl to them and get a pretty fair price for it compared to the other record stores around Los Angeles. No vinyl listening stations. Best purchase - The Sound - JEOPARDY for $35

Rockaway Records

2395 Glendale Blvd

Los Angeles, CA 90039

They mostly focus on classic rock but they do get in a good selection of punk/new wave stuff and tend to only buy vinyl that is in very nice condition. They also have a very nice stock of cheap vinyl (usually $3.99) which can occasionally have some surprisingly nice titles that they deemed unworthy. No listening stations. Best purchase - Television - ST signed by band for $40

Atomic Records

3812 West Magnolia Boulevard

Burbank, CA 91505

They seem to mostly focus on used vinyl and have a nice wall of obscure stuff and seem to get a lot of records in weekly. They tend to be a little pricey on the popular titles (T. Rex - The Slider for $24.99) but they have a very nice selection of albums from the 1970s and soundtracks. No listening stations. Best purchase - Big Star - #1 RECORD (White Label Promo) for $35 or sealed John Cale - FEAR for $9

Freakbeat Records

13616 Ventura Boulevard

Sherman Oaks, CA 91423-3700

Pricey records and cheap buyers. They mostly focus on classic rock but I never seem to find anything I want there. They have two listening stations. Best purchase - Roky Erickson - THE HOLIDAY INN TAPES for $15

Record Surplus

11609 West Pico Boulevard

Los Angeles, CA 90064-2908

They save all their best stock for their quarterly sales and don't have a new arrival section. They mostly focus on classic rock but don't usually have any of the really select titles that people are actually looking to buy. They have two listening stations. Best purchase - Sealed copy of Nina Nastasia - ROAD TO RUIN for $11.

Origami Vinyl

1816 W Sunset Blvd

Los Angeles, CA 90026

They mostly handle new vinyl but have a small selection of recent arrivals that sometimes get worthwhile new indie records. Prices on new vinyl tend to be a couple dollars more than Amoeba (or online) but help is very friendly and they have some out of print titles sprinkled into their collection. They also have a section for local bands which is very useful. No listening station but if you ask they will probably spin a used record you are curious about. Best purchase - My first stop on record store day and I found the Pavement - Quarantine the Past RSD vinyl.

Vacation Vinyl

3815 W Sunset Blvd

Los Angeles, CA 90026

They also mostly handle new vinyl but their used selection is always worth a browse. They often get used limited pressings and have first dibs at limited metal records. If you are looking for a rare Melvins or Boris album, you should probably check Vacation Vinyl. One listening station. Best Purchase - No Age - WEIRDO RIPPERS (Handmade Vinyl Edition) for $25.

Records LA

5654 West Adams

Los Angeles, CA 90016

A weird record store that is only open Thurs-Sun but has an amazing selection of used soul, funk and hip hop. The owner is weird but incredibly sharp when it comes to soul and funk, he specializes in 45s and you will find many boxes of them that are unsorted and unpriced. Happy hunting. Bring cash because they don't take card. One listening station. Best purchase - Jerry Washington - RIGHT HERE IS WHERE YOU BELONG for $40 or Exuma - ST for $30.

Wombleton Records

5123 York Blvd.

Los Angeles, CA 90042

Great curated selection of records that mostly focus on 80s and 90s new wave/punk. Records can be on the scratchy side and they are probably getting more picked over each day but this is a place to go if you are interested in finding Jesus & Mary Chain singles or Wedding Present albums. No listening station but the dude seemed like he would be down to spin a record for you over the store speaker. Best purchase - Nikki Sudden & The Jacobites - The Ragged School for $15

CD Trader

18926 Ventura Boulevard

CA 91356-3212

Sure they mostly specialize in CDs and DVDs but they also have a decent selection of used vinyl. However, I usually find that the only place I need to look is the New Arrivals section, anything worthwhile usually won't make it out of there. No listening station. Best purchase - Modest Mouse - THE MOON AND ANTARCTICA (original pressing) for $30.

Record Outlet

1489 E Thousand Oaks Blvd # 1

Thousand Oaks, CA 91362-6206

Overstocked with disposable classic rock but occasionally worth checking out because the owner seems to never price anything above $10 and that can lead to some great deals. Two listening stations (both shitty). Best purchase - too many to name... I guess I'll go with Joy Division - UNKNOWN PLEASURES (first edition, UK Press) for $10.

Grady's Record Refuge

2546 E Main St

Ventura, CA 93003

Mostly classic rock (formerly co-owned by Record Outlet owner) but very reasonably priced with a nice oddities section and some discounted new vinyl. Very clean layout for this type of store. Two listening stations. Best purchase - Bob Dylan - SELF PORTRAIT for $8.

American Pie Records

1412 Tower Sq # 2

San Buenaventura (Ventura), CA 93003-5130

Layout is a fucking headache and the owner is an old school asshole who is likely to lay out his political beliefs and sexual practices while you are browsing his stash. The stash is pretty undeniable though, it's set up in a huge storage unit and he has many rare pressings (a copy of VU & NICO that isn't supposed to exist) and I'm sure you could go in there with a fat wallet and leave with plenty of good records that you haven't been able to find elsewhere. His records are not the cleanest and his record jackets can sometimes be too worn to be worth the price he is charging but you will find something there if you are interested in records made before 1980. If you are interested in newer records (New Wave/Punk/Alt), don't bother because the owner hates that shit and will tell you about it. No listening station but owner will play your record (as long as it's not punk). Best purchase - Velvet Underground - LOADED for $30.

Salzer's Records

5777 Valentine Road,

San Buenaventura (Ventura)

They mostly carry CDs and new vinyl. The used vinyl that they do have is usually very shitty, thrift store-type crap and classic rock standards. They are also priced too high. Best bargains can be found in the new vinyl section where they have many sealed records for 50% off retail price. They also have good sales a few times a year and you might be able to find some decent deals then. No listening station. Best purchase - The Dø - A MOUTHFUL (sealed) for $6.

UPDATED

Burger Records

645 S State College Blvd

Fullerton, California 92831

I was only able to spend about an hour browsing this store before my friends grew restless and I was pulled away but I will say that this place is essential if you are looking for obscure indie bands from the 80s & 90s. They tend to price accordingly but some of their non-indie stuff is priced very reasonably (my friend got an early pressing (stereo) Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited for 10). They have a listening station and a bathroom that you can use if you ask nicely enough. Might pose a problem if you are seriously allergic to cats though, because a fat pussy has the run of the store. Best purchase - The Cavemen - ...Yeah for $12.

Black Hole

108 North Harbor Boulevard,

Fullerton, CA 92832-1813

A weird record store that focuses its selection completely on punk, alternative and especially brit-pop. A huge selection of Oasis and Smiths stuff, including an Oasis singles box and stuff signed by Morrissey hanging on the walls. I'm sure there are some pleasures hidden in these shelves but I didn't get a chance to really delve deep into their limited stock because I got there right before they closed. I didn't see a listening station or a bathroom but this place seems to warrant another visit next time I find myself in thee oh see. I didn't buy anything.

Rhino Records

235 Yale Ave

Claremont, CA 91711-4725

A good mixture of new and used with a heavy dosage of industrial/dark wave stuff from the 80s. They have two listening stations but refuse to let you listen to anything used that's priced higher than $24.99 (which I found really annoying because there was a Brian Eno used bootleg that I wanted to hear). They seem to have a good number of OOP new releases mixed in with everything else. Best purchase: Al Green Gets Next To You OG press in shrink for $9.99.
