the How to Press a Record Thread

Recommended Posts

Unless they recently changed their association, RecordPressing.com does NOT use Ericka for their pressing...they use Rainbo. We did several projects through them in late 2008-through 2009 and this was definitely the case at that time. In case anyone cares, our experiences were not great.

thanks for the input, I changed the original post to reflect this.

I suggest you call RecordPressing.com and get the correct info for everyone to see...

Also, you might want to add the following:

VG Kids to the list of "covers" and other printed stuff. Great products and nice folks over there who have been doing it for years and years. Check 'em out at : http://www.vgkids.com/

Record Industry to the list of foreign pressing plants. High quality vinyl over in Netherlands. Check out: http://www.recordindustry.com/

Very cool thread :)

Josh Bonati over in Brooklyn at Bonati Mastering does excellent mastering specifically for vinyl, he's been at it for years and is reasonable and super knowledgeable. He's also cutting lacquers and doing a fantastic job....but you have to ask him specifically about that as he does not advertise it directly. Highly recommended. Check him out here: http://www.bonatimastering.com/

Furnace Manufacturing (long known for the cd's and dvd's) has begun brokering vinyl in the last couple years through Record Industry in the Netherlands. Ask for Charles Maggio and check them out here: http://www.furnacecd.com/vinyl/index.php

thanks for the tips!

...I'm actively trying not to include too many brokers in this list and keep it more along the lines of direct contacts. I already have Record Industry listed in the main post, a big part of this thread is to encourage using resources as local as possible. So certainly there's no reason to use the Furnace broker if it's going to cost that much money to press a 7"

Well, you already have several brokers listed...so it seemed like you were trying to be comprehensive. It makes sense to keep it direct, but then you should dump other listings like RecordPressing.com, etc. And sometimes the brokers are the easiest way for "green" folks to get through the process by accessing "complete package deals" and other convenient options.

As for their (Furnace) pricing: We have never used them, so I can't speak to final invoices or anything...but I did have them give me quotes on a couple projects about 6-9 months ago and the prices were FAR lower than that. Seems like a call would be in order.

In the end, I am not endorsing them (Furnace) in any way...just adding to the list and/or conversation. However, I do know that Record Industry presses very high quality vinyl as I own multiple releases that were pressed there.

I have Pirate's Press listed because despite the fact that they're a broker, it'd probably be easier if you were dead set on having a splatter, hazed, tri-color, half and half, whatever color to just go through them instead of trying to contact GZ directly from the US. Dischord used them directly for a few years, but that's Dischord.

RecordPressing.com is still a weird "what's really going on here?" situation, that I will in time call them to figure out what the deal is: whether they own/rent a press at Rainbo or Ericka or what the deal is...but I just don't have time to do that leg work right now.

I might just add a brokers section and that way everyone is happy.

That's actually Furnaces standard pricing, obviously once you get to a 1000 it gets a hair cheaper, it seems like the price breaks realy start at a few thousand, which is beyond most indie labels ability to push.

That's why you only really see major releases that they have done, and box sets that you see at Best Buy for extremely inflated pricing.

anyone else feel free to send a quote request.

Most expensive broker I have ever seen in my entire life. I actually have some interesting correspondance with them, with me quoting the cost that it would be for me to simply by a round trip ticket to Netherlands, getting hotel, handing them the master in person, and flying home with my records, as opposed to brokering.

Cost difference was only around 1000 or so usd.

And that way I get vacation to the Netherlands as well as my records, for only slightly more than brokering via furnace.

added a new web store site that I'm actually going to transfer to officially on April 1st called www.storenvy.com, it's like a slightly more complicated version of www.bigcartel.com, but 100% free and with unlimited items, which is my only complaint with www.bigcartel.com, so in order to help out my distro to grow a bit, I'm moving over there.

It's also some sort of social network site as well...

We need more threads like this instead of " I have to complain about this and that"- threads

Big up for opening this thread! It will help me because my friend Ben helped me with 50% of these steps when I have put out the Solid Ground Demo 7inch

if you have more European plant/printer/whatever contacts please let me know, it's severely lacking in info for non-US residents

The Solid Ground Demo 7inch was pressed over Eldorado in Hamburg. The vinyl quality is DOPE... I might press other records in future over them unless Digital Media is offering better prices.....

http://www.eldorado-media.com/

Flight 13 is a good help for newbies because they sell/collect records too..... But really expensive if you chose anything under 500 records.....

www.flight13.com

Then there is a guy called Ameise. I have heard about him,. He is that kind of DIY punk with horrible equipment. He is pressing every single record and it takes years hahahha

What is the best way to figure out international shipping? I am going to be sending out several oversees so I wanted to figure out how to add Int. shipping to my webstore. I don't want to over or under charge. What kind of shipping do you use for oversees orders without charging a ridiculous amount?

buy a scale + http://ircalc.usps.gov/

or

When you talk about electro-plating you mentioned one company that does it for plants that don't do it in house. In house plants that do electro-plating are usually the people who build the lacquers or the people who press the records?

sometimes, some plants have on-site ability to do this, other places have it done for them by places like, but not limited to, Mastercraft.

the whole process can be done by one company or by two...Aardvark Mastering, I believe(but could be wrong), plates their lacquers themselves.

does this answer your question?
