fuck bank of america ( rant)

Recommended Posts

so I went to a bar about a week ago and everytime they ran my card ( for a 3.50 beer) they put an additional hold for 40 bucks this happened about 7 times, I ordered an AWK 7" from banquet and they charged me twice once for like 12 bucks and another time for .38 cents and they charged me 3 weeks after I ordered but charged me when this was all going.

basically I got hit with 6 overdraft fees which is a lot of money, Ive called them several times explaining that its not my fault the bar put all those holds on my money but they refuse to give me a dime back, I told them I was gonna put a gypsy curse on them like in the movie " Drag Me To Hell", they didnt think it was very funny, now im out over 200 bucks, over nothing because some stupid bar didnt tell me they put holds on my card

anyone have anything similar happen?

The problem with BoA is that they always charge the largest charge in a list of Pending Charges in order to lower your account faster. The point being to try and get you to overdraft so that they can collect more fees at a faster rate. Thankfully I've never had that happen. Money in the bank.

...shorty what you drank?

that sounds like an issue with the bar, and what the bar charged you, not with the bank.

I agree, though BofA are being a bunch of nonsensical ass-hats I'd get up the bars ass about giving me some money back because there' no reason to put a hold of $40 every time they run your card. They should do it once and charge the beers accordingly.

I would change banks, get a credit card to avoid using your debit card for things like this, and try to get some money back from the bar.

I work for Bank of America, although not in the deposits side.

The hold is placed by the bank each time the card is swiped until the final transaction comes in. Even though you were only charging 3.50 for each beer, what if you had given the hot bartender a HUGE tip. We place the hold in order to make sure the final dollar amt is available in your account. Since we already agreed to pay the bar, we need to have the money available. The solution of course would be to open a tab and just have one charge run through rather than multiples.

Banquet waiting to charge you three weeks after the fact is definitely a merchant issue, not a bank issue. I'd contact them and see what was up with that, although they're not likely to give you anything back but an apology.

In the future though, anyone who has questions concerns about a BOFA credit card, hit me up and I can help you out.

Regarding the charging of the highest dollar amt first, that is correct. Although the reason is not to lower your balance faster, but rather to make sure more important purchases are covered. Most banks do this, although certainly not all of them. BofA definitely does though.

I don't have BoA but I've never had a $40 hold placed on shit. I have Harris Bank. For debit gas purchases they do a $1 test charge. That's it. I think it's bullshit they expect you to have $40 on hand at all times just in case. Especially since they let you keep charging after the fact.

But yeah, just start a tab next time. The less amount of times someone has to swipe your card, the less amount of errors.

Wells does the $1 thing too. And a $40 hold is pretty ridiculous for EVERY charge. And if its just a hold how do you justify charging overdraft on it? That seems even more inane.

this is one of the reasons why i never use a debit card. my bank gave me one, never even activated it. i would advise everyone to look into getting AMEX. i have never had a problem with getting charge backs or refunds on bogus charges, it's one simple phone call and the charge is lifted. they have saved me from a few shady sellers when paypal couldn't recover funds.

It's not every charge that comes through on a debit purchase, just bars, restaurants, etc where you could leave a tip. We need to ensure you have enough money to cover the charge AND The tip.

The gas station 1$ charge is actually set by the station itself, not the bank. Some gas stations actually authorize $75 in case you fill up an SUV or something.

The best way to avoid an authorization hold is to use cash. Preferably cash taken out of a BofA ATM machine (which we invented. no joke.)

Okay, sure, great, so when the real charge comes through and its $5 then there's no overdraft of the account. But that would result in less income so fuck that noise.

i do everything through my state's credit union and it's great.

i can't really overdraft my checking as long as there's money in my savings, because if there's nothing in my checking & i use my debit card, it pulls it from my savings.

BofA does that too, and it's a great feature to have active... the problem is that if you don't keep money in your savings you have the same problem of potentially overdrawing your checking and getting fees because of it. Most of our customers that have ODP set up, don't keep money in their savings. =(

I usually only carry cash, but I wasnt planning on going out to the late night bar but I got wasted at the first bar and spent all my car and I had like 100 bucks on my debit card, the bar told me its illegal for boa to give me overdraft fees but they worded it some way to me to make it seem like it was right

usually I start a tab, but I wasnt planning on staying, but the more I drank the later I stayed and kept buying more drinks

no matter how much I argue, they just keep hanging up on me

untrue.

I am sorry it's happened Eddie. Those fees, when charged in multiples are never fun to deal with. Even as an employee I get those when I overdraw my account. And when I call, they don't get reversed unless there was some bank error either.
