deafmx
they were just in town opening for motherfucking Motion City Soundtrack. needless to say, I refused to go. they played Taste Of Minnesota midyear too but played at 5pm Friday, outdoors in the hot ass sun and for like $35 with shitty bands. missed that too, a man has to work until at least 5pm! then they tour with Tim Kasher and DON'T come here. slap in the face. AlexH.
Um. Motion City Soundtrack rules, dude. It's all the other bands on that show that made me not want to go. So many awful band names.
deafmx
I despise MCS, but whatever. to each their own. there were actually some decent bands on there, MCS was the reason I didn't want to go! Now Now Every Children, One For The Team, Gospel Gossip. Foxy Shazam was decent live opening for Hole. just saw this article: http://www.citypages.com/2010-12-15/news/taste-of-minnesota-ends-in-bankruptcy/
caseysitsallgood
they were just in town opening for motherfucking Motion City Soundtrack. needless to say, I refused to go. They weren't "opening" for MCS. In fact, they played a full set. Yes, they played before MCS, but really, MCS put up money to get MTB and the rest of the bands to come play. I really thought it was a great idea, to have multiple bands play First Ave & the Entry. Worked out nicely that I could see almost all 9 bands play, & MTB also played an acoustic set to open the show. Was well worth my $30. deafmx
despise is a strong word being as i've seen MCS and their fans at multiple shows i wanted to see the openers or "other" bands, i'll stick with despise. there are much better local bands that aren't around because they didn't blow up like MCS. unfortunate, i know. it happens. i'd gladly pay $20 to see Minus The Bear play a headline show, one that doesn't include MCS or their fans. the MCS lovers probably feel the same about plenty of the bands i like and go to see too. the feeling is mutual, i'm sure. long live The Cardinal Sin! R.I.P. they were just in town opening for motherfucking Motion City Soundtrack. needless to say, I refused to go. They weren't "opening" for MCS. In fact, they played a full set. Was well worth my $30. my main gripe was the ticket price. and supporting MCS at all i love Minus The Bear less and less with each album, but i dig that Acoustics album. Menus el Oso and OMNI were a far cry from Highly Refined or Beer Commercials though. i haven't gone to see them in years so i don't know why i care at all. plasma36
First time listening to this album and it's pretty good. Granted, the only other Minus the Bear album I've heard is Planet of Ice, once. The lyrics are overall pretty lame but the songs are catchy as hell. "Summer Angel" gives me hope that pop music can actually be good.
circlingvultures
I'm with deafmx on this one. MCS is downright terrible. I still have not heard OMNI, I want to, but based on what everyone has said about it I will wait and try and find a great deal on the vinyl. "Summer Angel" gives me hope that pop music can actually be good. That's funny... I rang up this kid who was taking the plastic off his OMNI CD, and I asked him, "So what did you think of Highly Refined Pirates?" and he didn't respond, so I asked him, "What about Menos el Oso..."...nothing......"Planet of Ice?" He then immediately replied with, "Oh man that's such a good CD -- really cool sounding! I play that shit all the time". It's cool that they have done something different sounding (basically got poppy as shit, and keeping the same lyrics over the years), but there was a distinct MTB sound that was captured in only a few of their albums, and I listened to OMNI a shit ton of times, but couldn't find that sound. It's cool if you dig this album, because someone has to support them when I'm not haha -- like everything, the crowds change when the music changes, but at least Portugal. The Man is still fucking awesome and different with each album!! YYEEAAAA BBOOIII
deafmx
bummer story. does anyone think OMNI offers a new listener something unique? something new and exciting? I can't see myself hearing that album first and getting into the band.

I can't see myself hearing that album first and getting into the band. I want to continue going over this subject, but now I feel like an old man. Speaking of that, by the sounds my ankles and knees make upon standing up from bed, I must be 90 in a 23 yr old's body. Hell yeah! Viagra, here I come!! plasma36
Dan: It's not that I dislike other MTB albums, I just remembered I should check out Planet of Ice because I saw that VC was repressing it. Deafmx: It's very clear to me that Omni is practically nothing like what you guys call "old" MTB, so I know I can't really say I like or dislike the band after hearing their newest. I think it's fair to say that Omni is an entity separate from their previous albums and someone can easily like one era of MTB and not the other. It's fine that you like the album. We just like to state our unnecessary opinions haha And since you really like the newest material, perhaps you won't like their older shit? My best friend has a boner for OMNI and American Slang, but I prefer the older material of MTB and Gaslight Anthem. It's cool though. There will never not be someone who dislikes the same music that someone else enjoys. In conclusion, fuck omni.

mcpherson123
There was a time not long after this album came out that the LP's were going for around and under $15 on eBay and it made sense to me.
