Good Documentaries?

Recommended Posts

I think the term "reactionary" Christian is more fitting.

And people see what they want to see in that documentary. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I felt it was pretty straightforward. The camp leader/pastor whatever she goes by (I prefer "closeted lesbian Jabba the Hutt") clearly states that she sees no issue with brainwashing children into Christianity because "that's what the Muslims are doing". Seeing those kids bawling their eyes out because they "sinned" was really hard to watch. This doc further emphasizes the guilt and shame pushed upon the Christian population as a whole. If you can take children who probably can't even read the bible and tell them they're going to hell because they dance for fun instead of for the lord (or something equally ridiculous, yes this was in the video) you're exploiting THE largest, most susceptible population of Christians for radical profit. They had some stat that said somewhere around 1/3 of Christians are children. It's clear they have no choice in the matter. Whether they escape it physically it's still stuck with them mentally. Each of these kids is truly fucked for life.

"Who wants to come up here and give up your life for God?"

precisely.

What I meant was, there are either people that are going to agree with the kind of things being taught there, and they're going to watch that documentary and find absolutely nothing wrong with it. And there are people that don't agree, and they're going to view it as absurd, creepy, or worse. But it's not going to change anybody's mind about anything. Even the people that ran that camp and sent their kids there thought it was really even-handed and that they came off just how they wanted.

So yeah...people are just going to see what they want to see in it.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing.

You're right. I would hope that at least a few took a step back, an outside look at how incredibly disturbing it truly is. Most Christians wouldn't put their kids through this shit so it's safe to assume they thought it was nutso too. Anyone on the edge of deciding to join that type of congregation might see these docs and say "You know, I'm crazy for Jesus but not THAT fucking crazy." That's where I think the most affected audience lies. Can't imagine that many people saw this and said "You know...THAT'S the way to go!"

I didn't have a chance to look through the thread, but if he hasn't been mentioned, Louis Theroux has a bunch of documentaries up on YouTube. You should be able to find a lot of his work online, and he is a very likeable character. He seems like he always wants to get involved in what he is curious about. Here is a video of him participating in a rap battle while doing a documentary on gangsta rap.

Here he is participating in his hypnosis documentary.

He has done lots of different stuff including documentaries on the porn industry, demolition derby, nazis, gambling, professional wrestling, body builders, gun crime in philadelphia, ultra zionists, racism in south africa, the westboro baptist church, and with people like jimmy saville, chris eubank, anne widdecomme, etc.

just watched Tapped.

i already use a bpa free nalgene bottle all the time, cuz i knew bottled water is awful for the environment, but some of the stuff they presented was nuts.

I'll have to watch this. I have a BPA Free bottle and an aluminum bottle with me 95% of the time. But sometimes I do buy bottled water... only cause I don't drink pop!

watch it. bottled water isn't required to be tested on a consistent basis like tap water is, and all the tests the companies do on them are in-house. apparently the fda doesn't require them to have any independent testing done on the water (at the time of filming, anyways).

the crap they found in bottled water straight off the shelf was scary.

just saw This Film Is Not Yet Rated last night. it's about the MPAA and how they have no set guidelines to rate movies and how the ratings board is top secret and many of them are being lobbied by organizations. really infuriating if you like movies and think the ratings system is effed. lots of cool interviews with directors like Kevin Smith, Darren Arronofsky, Matt Stone, and John Waters. highly recommended.

EDIT: Here's the trailer:

After I read the description of this movie I wondered why they would put a work of fiction on a site called "topdocumentaryfilms.com". Then I watched it and realized this shit actually happened...

I just finished watching Sri Lanka's Killing fields.

It's been talked about a lot recently, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

The film is pieced together from footage documenting the Sri Lankan government's 2008 war with the Tamil Tigers, in which something like 40,000 civilians were killed.

It's scary and heartbreaking and terrible to watch. I've embedded it here for you.

"In the course of this investigation, Yentob tells the life story of Dr Oliver Sacks, the man who would become one of the world's most famous scientists. Alan delves into this world by going to meet several of the case studies from Sacks latest book, The Mind's Eye.

He meets Stereo Sue, neurobiologist Sue Barry, who always saw the world as a flat 2D image until she suddenly acquired stereoscopic 3D vision in her late forties; Canadian crime writer Howard Engel, the man who forgot how to read, who remarkably continues to write despite a stroke that destroyed his reading ability; Chuck Close, the renowned portrait artist, who cannot recognise or remember faces and Danny Delcambre, an extraordinary and spirited man who, although having a condition which means he was born deaf and is gradually going blind, lives life to the full and uses close-up photography to record the world around him.

Often overlapping with these case studies is Sacks' own story. Here, doctor and patient combine as he talks about his childhood, his own struggle with face blindness, and the loss he felt when eye cancer recently destroyed his 3D vision."

This was shown on the BBC last week, and was such an enjoyable watch. Oliver Sacks is such a genius, and a wonderful storyteller. I genuinely teared up when...

SPOILER ALERT

the man who was about to go blind took up photography so he could capture all of the beautiful things and people in his life before he could no longer see them :'(

Anyone stumble across any cool music related docs during this lock down?  I saw that they put The Other F Word on Hulu, it's a really good look at what it's like to be in a touring punk band and a father at the same time.

This morning before work I watched this doc about Slint. Super interesting band with a really weird career path -

My drummer also recommended this documentary about Ginger Baker that's pretty wild. This dude is a nut but an insanely good percussionist
