almightyseancore
forgot to mention the devil and daniel johnston this too!!. and on that note, here's some great music documentaries! spending an evening with saddle creek blind melon: letters from a porcupine pearl jam: single video theory (making of Yield) red hot chili peppers: funky monks (making of BSSM) until the light takes us (documentary about the black metal scene in norway during the 1990s) you're gunna miss me (pretty rad flick about how roky erikson got fucked by the system) another state of mind (following the 1982 social distortion / youth brigade tour, both on and off stage. there's some pretty rad footage of them crashing at the dischord house while going thru d.c.. shit goes down.) the decline of western civilization 1 & 2, both documenting punk in the 80s. i think i'll stop here. lonesomexloveus
a couple i haven't seen mentioned: God Grew Tired of Us (about the lost boys from sudan) The Devil Came on Horseback (a former marine's documentation of the conflict in Darfur) Herb & Dorothy (two average people in NYC who amassed one of the biggest modern art collections ever)

Guest vinyldoa
also, this is a book not a movie but it is extremely well written and researched http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbine_%28book%29 I could not back this any harder. One of the best investigative pieces I've ever read. seriously, I've tried looking for other books about columbine but this is just the best out there. everything just sucks in comparison

tattoomike
Tim Hetherington, the guy who co-directed Restrepo, was recently killed during the fighting in Libya. I like Hitchens, but I hated the editing in Collision. Would've loved to have seen prolonged debate scenes. I like watching documenteries, but there's probably 8-10 on here that I have yet to see (and will have to check out now).

jerseydave77
Tim Hetherington, the guy who co-directed Restrepo, was recently killed during the fighting in Libya. While not in war zones the passing of Richard Leecock and David Wolper have set an ominous tone for the doc world rather early this year. These men were Giants in the industry. One of the best investigative pieces I've ever read. seriously, I've tried looking for other books about columbine but this is just the best out there. everything just sucks in comparison For real. The amount of research he did is insane. The details he was able to get from survivors made reading this incredibly difficult in spots. The way he flipped back and forth between the details of the shooting and the rest of the story worked so well. It allowed for the conflict to build and then he'd effortlessly release. It was the written equivalent of a post-rock song.

justinellison
"helvetica" is a pretty cool oneand "who killed the electric car?" For anyone who watched Helvetica and like it you need to watch the directors next documentary called objectified. It takes a look into industrial design and every day items we use. monsterrod
I really dug: God Grew Tired of Us - Sudanese refugees taken to the USA. It's amazing to see them adapt to the technology and things we all take for granted and then try to cope with the American "rat race" Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father - the most emotionally draining movie I have ever seen. jerseydave77
We Jam Econo - The story of the minutemen. If you're a Minutemen fan you need to see this, it has some awesome footage and stories. As a doc fan I kept wanting this to be a better overall film though. Still worthwhile but to me the Minutemen deserve near perfection.
