Game Of Thrones

I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a thread about this yet. The finale was just on Sunday night and it was totally awesome. If you liked Lord of the Rings but wished it was a little less nerdy and more violent then this show should be right up your alley. HBO really hit it out of the park with this one.

I was glad to see that HBO went ahead and green lighted a 2nd season after the first episode did so well. The only thing that bums me out about this show is that since it's not on basic cable my local theatre can't play it on the big screen like they did with Lost, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead. Oh well... I'll live.

And even though I watched the whole first season I went ahead and bought a copy of the first book. I don't read much these days. I hope this book changes that bad habit.

The first book might go a little slow, just because you already know most of the events from the show, but once you hit the second book you probably won't want to stop reading. The books are a really easy read because the chapters are short and each one is done from a different characters' POV.

I'm rereading the series right now so I'll be fresh when book five comes out in a few weeks.

I really enjoyed season 1 of Game of Thrones. Tyrion Lannister is my favorite character by far, I can't wait to see what they do with him in the future.

I must say I havent read the books, but was anyone even a little let down by the season finally?

What do you want, Bronn?

Gold?

Women?

...golden women?

The finale was very faithful to the book.

In what sense did you feel let down?

I thought the finale was fantastic. *SPOILER ALERT*

If I had to gripe about anything it would be that I thought it would have been cooler if Daenerys Targaryen would have walked into the burning fire and then walked right back out with the recently hatched dragons on her. That way more of the Dothraki would have seen how unbelievably powerful she is. Having her sitting there naked in the smoldering ashes was a tad bit cheesey but it had the same end result I suppose.

Also, while I'm at it... if anything did disappoint me it was the end of Episode 9. I guess I'm just a sucker for letting the protaganist win/live. It just felt an awful lot like Braveheart to me. Although Braveheart came out in 1995 and the first book was published in 1996 so they're most likely unrelated. I just couldn't help but feel like I'd seen it before...

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the whole season. I think I was just expecting more of a payoff for the season finale, after all the build up during the previous 9 episodes. It may just be that Season 2 will be packed with happenings. It sounds like its been extremely faithful to the book, so I guess I cant complain too much.

Yeah, I definitely see what you mean.

A good way to think of the first book/season is as an introduction. The final episodes are the jumping off point for the individual storylines. Jon is at The Wall, but until the end of the season a lot of people are wondering whether he's going to go south to fight for his father, or fight beyond the wall. Will Dany, Drogo and the Stallion Who Mounts the World get back her crown? Most of the stories don't really start until the end of the first book/season.

I like how Jon is brought back to the wall, there is going to be some epic shit going down up there and with his sister on her way up, its going to be the best thing for the family. I'm confident Rob can bust some skulls in the south before everyone has a common enemy in the white walkers.

LOVE this show, though I could do without the unnecessary soft porn scenes. I really like how the author has apparently no regard for good or evil characters and just lets the plot decide who lives and who dies. It keeps you wondering what will happen next, unlike a lot of fantasy writing. Finale did not disappoint.

I got all the books for my wife's Kindle, but I have to get through the first Dark Tower book before I start.
