xfedupx
I have my first gig in a couple weeks and I'm wondering if you guys had any tips. I'm getting better with beat matching and all that and I know that will happen with practice. Did you guys make setlists before you spin? Were you as nervous as I am weeks before your first time? Did you nerd out and make spreadsheets with songs and bpms? If you're in So Cal, check it out. It will be fun!

Guest
I really wanna start DJing soon. I'm in the process of unloading all my rock music. I'm just gonna stick to R&B, hip-hop/rap, old school, and the like.
lexicondevil
I have done some dj work and yeah I was nervous the first couple times. You just need to have all of your records together and know where everything is. I didn't do much beatmatching, I just felt the vibe of the crowd and rocked it. There are some djs who just play what they like and wonder why no one is dancing or paying attention. I always tried to play stuff people knew and then snuck in stuff that I thought they should know. A good balance is the key. Have fun!
shanehennessey
do you guys have any mixes? i rushed this one out about 20 minutes ago http://soundcloud.com/palemale/late-august-11 also have this http://soundcloud.com/palemale/august11 i made too many mistakes in both but whatever
xfedupx
I actually just got a usb soundcard with rca inputs so I could record. I tested it out last night and tried to make a mix and when I was playing it back, I heard some weird stuff. I think my motor is jacked
lipmyreeds
I DJed before I sold my soul to the corporate devil. I BPMed everything and made a skeleton setlist for each of the hours of the set. Then, when someone requests anything, you know straight away if you can blend it in where you are or if you'll have to do something more creative. However, based on what you're spinning (if the poster is accurate), I think quick fades or even hard cuts on downbeats will suit you just fine. I recall the first time or two being real nervous, just limit your exposure to mistakes by keeping it simple as someone else mentioned and you'll do great. Good luck! julioanta
Anybody have links to good beginner/ how-to websites for starting off? Thanks!
xfedupx
If you search google for beginner tips, most sites have the same info copied from one another. That's what I did and still do almost every day haha. I would start with searching for beginners mixing/beginners beat matching.
