New York Record Stores/Venues

Recommended Posts

So me and the wife are headed to NY for a trip for a Braodway show and general shenanigans. We will be staying in Long Island(East Meadow) but going to the city and surrounding areas to find stuff. I was just trying to see if anyone can give me some record stores, other than Looney Tunes, in the immediate area or even in the city. Also, I wanna catch a show up there so if anyone knows any venues and can give me names, mostly punk and hardcore venues, but if on the short chance someone knows Psycho venues, that'd be awesome.

Thanks!!!

Took this from the store post...hope this helps:

New York, NY

I'd be happy to do more scouting if people want more details. I'm still new-ish to the vinyl thing, so it's possible there are things I'm missing, or that my descriptions aren't that great for your specific needs. Here are my impressions for what it's worth:

Other Music - lots of Indie Rock stuff, fairly small used section, good CD selection too

Bleecker Street Records - In my opinion, the best record store in NYC. They've got a huge selection of both new & used vinyl, and if you were to go to one store, this is a great one-stop-shop. From what I can remember, not a ton of niche product, but great store nonetheless

Bleecker Bob's - huge selection of vintage and used vinyl, probably your best bet for used stuff

J&R - part of the 1-block-long J&R Electronics behemoth, but it's a great place for new "mainstream" vinyl

Generation Records - great selection of punk & metal stuff. I've only been in there a few times, but it's a cool store

Within the city:

Academy Records is great, so is Generation. I haven't been to Rebel Rebel on Bleeker in a while, but its' got a TON of stuff if you want to dig around for a while. If you've got some money to spend go to Gimme Gimme Records - they're usually priced in the eBay range. If I think of some more I'll edit this but that should get you started.

that place generation is sick. the people know what they are talking about and arent just some hipsters talking down to people. you can spend hours in there and still not get raped on price.

They also have awesome in-stores, definitely worth a trip if anyone hasn't been there.

Awesome!

I don't know about the others but Other Music closed a year ago.

May I also suggest:

Rough Trade NYC (in Brooklyn, Williamsburg, by far the biggest store in NYC area)

Limited To One (which is set to open its doors tomorrow)

Turntable Lab (in east village Manhattan, very close to Limited to One so you can kill two birds with one stone)

Permanent Records (near Prospect Park, Brooklyn)

if the stress doesn't kill me first.

have been collecting some stock for some time now.  excited about people seeing and buying it.

I'm a small business owner myself so I know how stressful these things can be. If you're looking for any help send me a PM (completely serious as I'm looking to change in career). Best of luck.

was in New York last year a hit a few. There are so many record stores scattered around that it is very overwhelming. The one store that stands out to me the most was Material World records and tapes. They pretty much specialize in metal/punk, plenty of stuff that I have never even heard of before. Prices were decent and I even had them ship what I bought to my house...can' t wait to make it back there one day

Material World is really really good. Their user section is vast and reasonably priced and I've gotten many gems in there. They have noise and so much punk/hardcore. Though I just found out about Nass el Ghiwane, an awesome Moroccan band, last time I was there. They filled the gap for me after Hospital closed.

Excited for Limited to open! Can't wait to see so many rare records in person.  I'm already setting a budget haha.
