jared
So about three weeks ago I got my hands on a Rega RP1 with a free receiever from improtant records. The first thing i notice is that whenever I listen to something that is relatively loud or with a lot of fuzz, I get this crackling noise that only happens in that instance. Say for example a Sunn O))) record - I can't listen to those without hearing the crackling coming up when something get's really loud or high pitched. Now my question is, Is it the speakers and the reciever or is it that the cartridge isn't somehow aligned right ?
ajxd
At loud levels hearing a fuzz only in the phono channel can mean a few things. Crappy phono preamp is the likely cause. If its apparent in other channels, it could be the amp is clipping. Start checking different sources to see if it follows to know if its the entire amp, or a specific channel. Also is it in both speakers? As for cartridge alignment, it wouldn't be static or fuzz.
jared
Well, I tried it on the other channel and it isn't so bad. Also - It's in both speakers, so I think sometime soon I'll be having to get another amp and speakers, which is kind of a bummer, but it is what it is. Thanks for the response, man! ajxd
What receiver is it? There could be build up on the pots internally. So any other source (CD player, iPod, radio) still gave a hiss? You could be just listening too loud for the amp. Its not your speakers.
jared
It's a JVC R-S77. I have yet to try any of those as I only have it hooked up to the turntable for now. I was thinking that as well. I'll certainly be messing with it to see if anything else gives me that same sort of hissing.
