Music Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I know this is kind of silly, but I have 70 free album downloads on what.cd and they all expire on January 30th.  Thus, I want to download 70 albums by then.  However, I want to download stuff I will actually like!

Here is a link to my last.fm so you can get a feel for the type of music I listen to.  I'm looking for music that is similar to what I like.

Recently however, I've been playing a ton of dubstep which is all too funny, but if you know of any good, cool, underground dubstep stuff I'd be down for that too!

Also, if anyone is looking for something that is hard to find, I'd be willing to help out!

My top relevant artists:

  • Decemberists
  • Okkervil River
  • The Flashbulb
  • La Dispute
  • Brand New
  • Kevin Devine
  • RX Bandits
  • Hostage Calm
  • The Dear Hunter
  • Right Away, Great Captain

Thanks in advance!

I might recommend something you already know:

Seems like you know more about Ska than I do. I really like the MU330 - Winter Wonderland album.

The Toh Kay / Dan Potthast split with them covering each others songs is pretty good.

The Peacocks album on Asian Man is really good. More rockabilly I guess.

Mean Jeans - On Mars was my #1 last year. I'm not seeing a ton of Ramones style pop-punk in your taste but I loved that album so much I have to recommend it.

I like about one or two rap/hip-hop albums a year and I know you don't have much rap in there but Doomtree - No Kings is good enough to deserve a recommendation to anyone except people who just won't listen to rap.

The Lillingtons - Death By Television. The negatives -- the first verse and second are almost always the same. The songs sound similar. But after you get over those, it's so freaking good. I don't know if you follow Teenage Bottlerocket now but it's the same singer. Everything he puts out is golden (if you like this kinda music).

I feel like you have to be aware of Tegan and Sara but I don't see them. I'd still recommend "the con". That is my favorite album of theirs. Based on some of the indie rock that is really high on your list, it should be something you would like.

That's all I can think of right now. A lot of what I listen to is already in your list and then I have a lot of obscurer pop-punk stuff.

I'll second these as good / great albums. Especially Pennybridge.

Cuban Ballerina / Little Brother is like Sink or Swim / Senor and the Queen to me. Little Brother is better on a per song basis (as is Senor) but I never know how to compare an album and an EP fairly.

Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret

Can't go wrong with any BtS. I would check out There's Nothing Wrong With Love first though.

Perfect From Now On is easily their best album but I couldn't see you being too into it based on your tastes.

Since you are all dubstepped out, download some New Order:

New Order - Movement

New Order - Low Life

New Order - Brotherhood

New Order - Power, Corruption, and LIes

For my punk suggestions, find the "hardcore brethren" thread.

Thanks everyone, so far, for all the music recommendations!  Please keep them coming!

I used to be in a ska band, but when I graduated high school I did stop listening to ska and after a year in college I left the now-defunct band.  I don't listen to ska much anymore, but stuff like Westbound Train really gets me stoked.
