My parents let me watch horror movies growing up... I grew up in a military family, and my dad retired when I was in my early teens. There was a shit convenience store up the road where I'd ride my bike and rent stuff sometimes, because the only TV we had was an aerial that got CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox, the internet was hardly a thing, and we could barely even get a decent radio station.

So I move to this shitty little rust belt town, where all there is to pass the time is fart in your tractor seat. Everyone was churchy, and despite being forced to go to church with my grandmother when I lived with her, it never took. So my natural reaction to going from Hawai'i, where I flourished and had things going on and friends and life and culture, was to just fill my mind with all of the grittiest, most horrible shit I could find. I discovered death metal, and rented all the horror movies at that shit convenience store. Then I got my driver's license and could drive to the video connection and rent all of their horror movies. Then I got a job next to Movie Gallery and rented all of theirs, too. And started dating a girl that also liked horror movies. So every exploitative, shocking, offensive, badly made, gross, horribly acted and directed piece of shit when directly into my brain as a way to cope with living in a place I thought was totally fucked up.

Somewhere around my 80th troma flick, I think my capacity for really loving the shit kind of just burnt out like a light bulb. I don't really get that excited about them anymore, though it's starting to come back a bit for me. I'm still not down with all of the torture-porn, Eli Roth kind of stuff - it just doesn't do anything for me. Cabin In The Woods was sort of the perfect film for me, and I had a huge smile on my face by the time all hell broke loose. I love that movie so much.

I am totally stoked for the Evil Dead remake, though. Call it sacrilege, but it looks good to me, if what you're looking for are the same things you loved the first time you saw the original one. It would have been a piece of shit if they tried to make another movie with someone trying to be Ash.

As for my favorite horror movie of all time - I used to claim it was Dawn of the Dead, but I find myself returning to the original TCM a lot as something I really enjoy.

I haven't been into the reboots of TCM, though I will say out of the hole franchise, the second one, with Dennis Hopper, holds a place in my heart.

have we talked about how great John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders are? cuz i just finished the latter of the two and i am super sad that i'm done with it. if you're into any kind of sacreligious off the wall horror-comedy, please do yourself a favor and read these books.

I've read John Dies at the End and have seen the movie and loved them both.  I have and need to read This Book is Full of Spiders though.  I've been wanting to get to it for a while, but it's kind of difficult when I have a bunch of shit I need to read for one of my classes.  Hopefully I can get to it soon though.

I watched Room 237 last night, which is a documentary on the hidden things in the Shining. It was pretty interesting, but couldn't shake the "these people have way too much time on their hands and are definitely looking too hard at it" feeling.

I've really been wanting to see this and I've heard good things.  I'm always down for a good horror-related documentary.

I saw it! Had a watching party with my girlfriend, cousin, and my cousins fiancé the day after it came out On Demand. I really enjoyed it. But do I think it was better than the first one like everyone else does? Most definitely not. The first one was so much creepier and scarier than the second one. Don't get me wrong, the second one was a really fun watch, but I was barely actually freaked out like I was almost nonstop during the first.

Mama - Pretty meh. Started out ok, but once the "supernatural" stuff begins I wasn't as into it. There were some pretty good sequences though, mostly the little girls interacting with the ghost of Mama. Also, the creepiest thing about the movie is that the monster isn't CGI, but in fact a contortionist in make up played the part. The only CGI was the whispy hair and the floaty clothing.

The Woman In Black - Decent. Reminded me of old Hammer horror films. Lots of atmosphere. Some decent scares.

The Innkeepers - I liked it.

Dead and Breakfast - rewatched after not having seen this in a long time. Really fun backwoods zombie flick with a David Carradin buddhist influence and country western rap.

Texas Chainsaw 3D - Awful. Bad story, bad script, bad acting. Not to mention the fact that they open the movie following the events of the original (1974) and the new movie is set present day. So the main character who was a baby in 1974 should be about 40 in the movie, and is instead played by 25 year old actress.

The Awakening- Similar to The Lady in Black. Really good atmosphere and story telling. Some decent scares. Plus Rebecca Hall.

The Collection - Pretty shitty. I really enjoyed the first Collector, but this was an unnecessary and pretty bad overall sequal.

Midnight Meat Train - Rewatched this one again just the other night. I can do without Bradley Cooper, but overall it's worth watching.

*kinda spoilers for VHS2*****

I agree 100%!

There was this unsettling uneasy feeling you got with the first one that I didn't feel during the 2nd (kinda hard to with the zombie one which was great in the same sense) and I think their alien one was my least favorite of all the shorts (would've been really happy with a lake creature) still an over all really fun movie and I was really happy that they expanded the main story the way they did, Really looking forward to what they'll do for the 3rd.

Now I'm just patiently waiting for hatchet 3

Finally someone else appreciates Dead and Breakfast! Love that movie and I can never get anyone to watch it b/c they think it looks stupid.

I first rented it forever ago at a Hollywood Video because the cover said it was "American's answer to Shaun of the Dead".

I really rented it to see how bad it was going to be, and ended up pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Really well done, smart, and fun to watch.

Highly recommended.

Watched Hatchet 2 last night. I just can't get into this franchise. I'm all for B horror, but something about it just isn't doing it for me.

Started Maniac a few weeks ago, and though I do dog Elijah Wood, it was pretty awful, so we stopped watching about 20 minutes into it.

Pretty stoked for The Purge, the concept is really interesting, so we'll see how that one goes.

I enjoyed Mama up until close to the end.  I found a lot of the film creepy but then they started showing her too much, and I could really tell she was CGI.  She may not be ALL the time, but she definitely is quite a bit towards the end.

I remember thinking The Woman In Black was somewhat meh.  The idea was pretty cool, but there wasn't much more too it besides a few jump scares.

The Innkeepers is one of my favorite horror films.  Such a creepy and atmospheric film.  Plus I love me some Ti West.

I thought The Collection was a pretty enjoyable watch.  It was a lot cheesier than the first.  Actually... I don't remember The Collector being cheesy at all.  It was actually pretty scary.  So I do kind of wish they went that way with The Collection.  I can't wait to see how it all ends with the third one though.

Midnight Meat Train has always been a favorite of mine.  Always glad to see another fan!

Aww man!  I just watched it the other night and I actually really liked it!  I was a big fan of the original and I thought they did a great job with the remake.  It was also really cool to see Elijah Wood play such a creepy guy after only getting a taste of his creepy side in Sin City.  The gore and everything was great as well, so that's always a plus!
