Mathematics is etymologically a plural noun even though in some cases it takes on the role of a sigular verb. The word mathematical could be shortened to 'math'. Example: Mathematical equation = Math equation. However, the shorthand for mathematics is maths to retain the plural aspect of the word. Example: I have a degree in maths. And I decided to listen to the entire list of albums we did come up with after the whole voting thing.
