roadmonkey
Most of your funds will be spent on booze and not gambling. Plan Accordingly. Stratosphere has all you can drink beer, well drinks, wine for $20 from 6PM - 10PM on weeknights. Take full advantage of this. Trust me. (Oh and tip your waitress for every round despite $20 price tag. She will keep you properly flushed and it will still be waaaaay cheaper ($35 for 15 drinks is not a bad deal) Agreed with other here, don't be afraid of cabs. The Wicked Spoon buffet at the Cosmopolitan may be the best buffet in vegas. It's expensive though like $40 with all you can drink $35 without it. Team Avatar
thanks guys for all the info! my roomie, who has been here many times, has said the exact opposite thing about cabs. Luckily I don't drink so I can focus my money on food / gambling, but everyone else i'm with does. I know we're planning to hit up hoover dam ( cause we have time ) and maybe the tigers and dolphins as well

mrc
YES go to Freemont! Also, literally right across the street is a really cool bar called The Griffin (511 Fremont Street). A lot of locals chill there and it is seriously the coolest atmosphere ever. The interior of the place is REALLY cool, too. I got married in vegas in November. I had about 16 friends fly out there with me and we did old vegas one night, and that bar was rad. The bar next door was fun too (the Beauty bar). we gambled, drank a ton, ate some awesome food... what you would expect. If you have a car/ride there is zip lining in the mountains around boulder city which was so much fun. its about a 20 min drive outside the strip. think it was called flightlinez or something like that. Hash a go go's was a fun place for breakfast. crazy portions, but all really good + great drinks.

roadmonkey
Check out the Rio or any off strip casino. Single deck blackjack fucking rocks I've found single deck black jack is one of the biggest rip offs that stack the odds against the player more than anything I've seen. Casino War is just about worse. Unless you are an expert in counting cards, you will probably not get too much out of it, and if you are counting cards, the powers that be will know because "years of observing everyone playing research" so they'll come down on you for cheating and that's the end of you. iron666monkey
I had to go to Vegas for work in January. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to any record stores but I really wanted to hit up Zia and Moondog. Next time. Unfortunately Vegas has gotten super expensive, especially the strip. I remember when everything was practically free, but that was like 20 plus years ago. I found a really good burger joint on the strip called Holsteins Shakes In Buns. It's a little pricey but the food is good and they have a pretty awesome beer selection. I ended up buying most of my beer from cash and carry stores. I found it was a hell of a lot cheaper. Downtown Vegas is really cool too. Freemont is pretty rad. My ex-wife's parents owned a house in Vegas so I used to go out there a lot. Lots of good restaurants and shit are off the strip, so if you don't have a car it makes for an expensive cab ride which I would really recommend. If you do have a car/rental, definitely get off the strip for a while and explore. Yelp is key.
mrc
^ good point about beers/drinks. I had a walgreens across the street from our hotel so we would just grab 6 packs and wander the strip. Super money saver right there.
jerseydave77
Yup a sixer on the strip is key.
3arl
don't veer too far off the strip with an open container though. it's technically still illegal but they turn a blind eye on the strip, no guarantee that they extend it much further
billya
I actually went looking into the idea of renting Fat Mike's house for this party but the site was down. Guess he sold it or gave up on renting it. I actually looked it up a few months back, and since it is a residential place you have to rent it out by the month. It is on my bucket list. Yep single vs. multi deck is absolutely meaningless unless you are counting. Part of being good at counting, is being able to disguise your betting so they have difficulty telling. And the worst case I believe is that they ban you from that casino. There are plenty of them to go around. Or does Vegas have some big cartel between the Casinos now to try to stop card counters? Can't say for certain.

I know we're planning to hit up hoover dam ( cause we have time ) and maybe the tigers and dolphins as well Given that you are a vegan (which I am translating into being an all around animal lover) you have no business taking part in any activity that is built on monetizing whales or dolphins. Watch any/all of "the Cove", "Blackfish", or "the Whale" and it will be easily apparent. Dolphins/whales are incredibly high thinking, social animals and despite appearing happy to do tricks for humans, when the trainers speak about their quality of life in captivity, it is heart-wrenching. The same sort of applies to the tiger, but on a lower scale. Treated properly, a tiger can probably have a decent life in captivity (not that different than the dogs and cats in our homes). laralaurent
thebiglebowski
Kind of on a soapbox there, but I feel really strongly about the whales/dolphins thing. Will never, ever give one dollar to a person trying to make money off them in captivity. Would be more likely to picket than watch.
radiatorhums
I don't know if this was mentioned, but I'm not sure how easy it is to eat vegan on the strip. You might end up living on Cliff bars and crummy salads. I agree with buying alcohol from the store. The last few times I've went, we'd just buy two or three bottles for the room. Have a few drinks while we got ready and then make one for the walk to wherever. Alcohol will still probably be the most expensive part, but taking advantage of booze at the store will help cut that cost a bit.

goodfriendbadhabit
Idk how much traveling you tend to do but, based on the mentioning of Vegan... Food: Le Thai next to Common Wealth on East Fremont, Veggie House in China Town (everything is Vegan, besides about two things that mention eggs in it), Sunrise Coffee (right next to the airport and has vegan food made to order & pastries), Ronald's donuts in China Town(you have to ask which racks are vegan, they change arrangement sometimes), Velvet Cafe (foods alright but it's right on the strip), Pop up Pizza (inside the Plaza on Fremont.) Unfortunately this kind of thinking is what keeps them in captivity. The more money that is made on them, the more it will happen. The world isn't going to change one way or the other so see the dolphins if you want. When you get back, watch the cove. After it breaks your heart I think you will see where I am coming from. Flippers former trainer talks about how terrible dolphin captivity is. Have a blast though.
Team Avatar
wow. I did have a blast. I did not go to Fremont at all though, which I'm bummed about. There were about 14 dudes and 14 gals and making plans was ridiculously hard. I did go to the hoover dam, which was awesome. I ate at Prime, which is one the restaurants at the bellagio, and they had a vegan menu and pretty much everything about that dinner was absolutely amazing. We sat on the Patio which had this view: I ordered this mushroom side that was probably my favorite thing i've ever had in the entire world ( literally just assorted roasted mushrooms in a delicious sauce, but it was SO fucking good ) and the tofu. I also went down a lot of money from slots and blackjack. The last night though I decided losing more money wouldn't hurt so I put the rest of my wallet down on roulette ( 35 on red and 10 on #21, which is my ultimate frisbee number ), and well, the one spin I had landed on 21 and I made back most of what I lost. ( $385 ). It was the cooooooooolest fucking thing ever. roadmonkey
