soniklife
LOVE LETTER "COLLECTING LOSS" LATHE CUT 10 INCH OUT NOW Building upon the foundation that was laid with two cassettes, "It Brought Us Something We Had to Know" and "Gentle Memories", Love Letter is back with a six track effort called "Collecting Loss". This time around Love Letter takes snippets of the cinematic aural post rock sprawl approach that was captured so well on the first two cassettes and marries it with a touch of "pop" flair. "Collecting Loss" finds its songs more traditionally arranged and most noticeably in the Love Letter discography with vocals being adding to its sonic repertoire. Don't let the words "structure', "pop" or "vocals" think that Love Letter has turned upside down because that simply isn't the case, it is just that Love Letter has morphed into something else while still being what it was before, washes of layered, reverberated guitar melodies and drones meshes with field recordings, vocal whispers and strummed guitars. This six song ep is akin to a lucid dream that one may experience on a windy autumn night. "Collecting Loss" examines the untainted innocence of youth and how once that innocence is lost it can never be reclaimed. For fans of Godspeed You Black Emperor, Azusa Plane, Paper Armies and Mariposa. "Collecting Loss" lathe cut 10 inch is limited to an edition of 15. Each lathe cut 10 inch is cut in real time by Graham at 2208 Records and is on clear polycarbonate with printed black & white labels. Each lathe cut record is packaged in a numbered chipboard jacket with full color artwork and includes a insert, download card, a love letter, a handmade decoder postcard and a bracelet made by Andrew and Kerry of Love Letter. With a ukulele, a drum machine, layers of vocals and touches of keyboard, Restaurnaut's Nick Dolezal creates a brand of lo-fi bedroom pop that has a folk ting at times. Restaurnaut recalls the sounds of Furniture Huschle, Hallf Handed Cloud, and Charlie McAlister, while lyrically it recalls the social mindfulness and political consciousness of Plan-It-X artists in the late 90's. With cassette releases Almost Halloween Time and Dolezal's on Kerchow Records, Rok Lok is thrilled to give "Birth" which recorded in the summer of 2013 the proper release is deserves. "Birth" is comprised of ten infectious, folky bedroom pop tunes which is all packed into C-30 white clamshell (home dubbed in real time)cassettes with full color labels, full color numbered j-cards, a lyric insert and a sticker Limited to an edition of 40. And when you have did you ever wonder what could possibly be on that cassette? Or perhaps cleaning out the contents of home you just moved into and found a old cassette in the attic? In my mind the 18 track full length effort, "Hot Trash" from British Columbia based Kkidss, is what could be potentially on the cassette tape. Christopher Edwards, the mind behind Kkidss writes somber, introspective cuts of loner, lo-fi bedroom folk that recalls the sounds of John Thill, Simon Joyner and Paste. Edwards' lyrics dig, and jab hard, in a unsettling almost confessional style motif. "Hot Trash" relishes in lo-fi, home recording excess being 18 track long album but never over stays its welcome or never feels as if it is treading familiar territory. "Hot Trash" is limited to an edition of 40 white clamshell C-60 cassettes with full color labels and full color, numbered cardstock j-cards.
