  1. Finally just hooked up my first setup.  Could not be any happier with the sound. It's a beautiful thing. Went with:

    Pro-ject Debut Carbon ($340 - MusiciansFriend)

Marantz PM6004 ($330 - from MusicDirect off of Amazon, was able to save $70 with amazon credit points)

    KEF Q300 ($500 Accesories4Less)

Hooked the speakers up with some shitty speaker wire my dad had laying around my parents house. I'll pick up some Blue Jean cables for them once I officially move in to my new place and figure out the placement of everything. Some quality speak stands are next on my list. Will prob pick up a Pure i-20 for streaming audio.

  2. needle doctor gave me a 10% discount ($359 shipped) as well. i got the 15% discount from musician's friend but they kept delaying the ship date so i went to needle doctor and they shipped it within an hour after i ordered it. i'd definitely recommend them if they continue delaying the ship dates, the last date i was given was at the end of February and they still weren't confident about it so i gave up on waiting.

I feel your pain with that one. Ordered mine a month ago, and I got an email from a Rep saying it should ship on 1/1.  They are now saying 1/24.

  3. what kind of music will you be listening to mostly? do you like heavier bass in the music you listen to?

I'm a Rock N Roll kinda guy. Pretty eclectic mix though anything from indie ,pop-punk, post hardcore, to 90's alternative. I like my bass, but I don't want it to be overwhelming.

    What is your budget?

When I was looking at floorstanders, the one that really caught my ear was the Monitor Audio RX-6.  They're actually on sale at Audio Advisor right now for $1298 for the pair.

Yea I've heard the RX-6's are pretty nice. But unfortunately my budget is only about $500 right now. Was willing to be a bit more flexible but I just had to drop alot of money into my car.

Based on my budget in the beginners guide thread, they recommend:

    Wharfedale Diamond 10.5 ($400) retail $950
    Kef C7 ($400) retail $800
    BOSTON ACOUSTICS A360 ($400) retail $800

    Klipsch RF-52 II ($550)

Are any of these viable options or better than the KEF Q300 bookshelf speakers?

Also I found a pair of Factory Refurbished Boston Acoustics RS334's for $500, usually retailed  at $1200. Anyone have any experience with these?
  4. I'm looking for some speakers to pair with my new Marantz PM6004. Initially I was leaning toward bookshelf speakers, most likely the KEF Q300. But now I'm toying with the idea of some floorstanders. I'd love to hear some opinions and suggestions on what floorstanding speakers would be a good match for this amp or if I should just stick with bookshelf speakers.

For consideration, the size of the room I'll be using them in is about 270sq feet and I'm trying to keep my budget too $500 as well.

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  5. FWIW I was eyeing similar speakers with a similar setup (Pro-Ject Debut Carbon + Marantz PM6004) and wound up buying a pair of Monitor Audio RX1s for $500 here.  A bit over your price range, but they are worth checking out. I am happy with the results overall.

Another front-runner for me were Kef Q300s (also ~$500).  These are nice because they are front-ported, which allows you a bit more flexibility in where you place them.

Question, what made you go with the Monitor Audio's over the KEF Q300's. Just putting my setup together and have the Debut Carbon and PM6004 on the way. Just need to pick up the speakers now. Been debating over those two.

  6. So I'm moving into a new place shortly and my lovely GF is allowing me to use a spare room/office space for pretty much whatever I would like. So my first priority is to get my very first set up in there. Was looking for any tips or reccomednations any of you could give me.

My budget is a little flexible at the moment ,but I'd say that I'm willing to go up to about $1300, give or take.

I think I have decided on the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon as my turntable. As far as my amp and speakers, that's where I need some help. I'm currently looking  at the Marantz P6004, mostly because I can pick it up for about $340 which seems to be a pretty good price.  I haven't done to much research on speakers yet, so that is completely up in the air.

All the info I've been looking at can get be a bit overwhelming so any advice or reccomendations any of you guys could give me based on my budget would be awesome.
