  1. This was a good little test.  I picked the WAV correct 4 out of 6 times and the 320 kbps the other 2 times.  To me it sounded obvious which was the low quality mp3.  I was listening through low quality mini bookshelf speakers.  I imagine the difference would be huge on my home system.  That said, if I'm out running or using it as background music, the quality doesn't matter that much to me.

  2. I would poke around on Audiogon if you don't mind buying used.  It's a reliable site and you can get some good stuff that has been taken care of very well.  I have an older set of Von Schweikert VR-1s that I got off there for around that price a number of years ago.

I like Paradigm's Studio bookshelves at somewhat near that price also

I'm sure an NAD phono preamp would do well.  I've had the NAD PP2 for years with no issues.

  3. I've listened to this since he sent out the Kickstarter download a bit back and can't get into it at all.  The last solo record was not good in my opinion either (You're All Those Things And Then You're None).  The Far reunion record from around the same time did not live up to his past work either.  I think I'm done with his new music after 3 misses in a row.

I'm a huge Jonah fan.  From the first time I saw him with New End, I've seen him over 20 times in big clubs to living rooms, acoustic, full band, and everything in between. Awesome guy and his past stuff is just superb and holds up really well.

  4. Amen. I hope California never adopts the only work for tips law. That would SUCK.

It sound great to get min wage plus tips but the unintended consequence is that fewer servers are hired because they cost more.  Servers would have more work for more pay but there'd be fewer of those jobs.  Then you have servers getting higher wages than the skills for the job warrant.  You can't have it both ways- same amount of positions/jobs and better pay.

  5. I usually tip a buck at the carryout places I go too. Most of the carry out I order are from small family owned eateries. If I am picking up from a huge chain (which is rare) I never tip.

    All deliveries I add $5.

What's the difference?  The kid working the register is probably getting paid the same at either restaurant/take out place.  Someone who works at a Pizza Hut should get less than someone who works at a local pizza place just based on the ownership of the establishment?

  6. Most of the time it's a pizza or Chinese place where the takeout person is not a waiter or waitress.  They're getting paid a wage just like a fast food place so I don't tip.  To tip in this situation would be the same as tipping the retail salesclerk that takes your clothes off the hangers, folds them and puts them in a bag.

  7. I would look into something like the Paradigm 20s, thought they go for around 500.

Also read through GoodSounds reviews.  They have some more affordable bookshelves in there.

I have heard excellent things on the Axiom Audio.

If you're going to wait on the 5.1, does that mean you'll wait on the 5.1 receiver?  I don't think it makes sense to buy a new surround receiver when you're only going to use the stereo component for several years.

  8. You should get a credit card so that you don't have to carry a ton of cash around. Also it will help you establish credit. This is important because credit let's you get a loan for a car and a house. No credit=no car/house loans at reasonable rates if at all. Using credit cards also protects you if you purchased something that was defective, fraudulent, etc.

The key to having credit cards is to pay the balance off every month. If you do this, it is like a loan for 30 days or a substitute for carrying cash. Plus you can get a small percentage back (1-2%) through something like Capital One Rewards.

If you carry a balance you're paying more than what you paid at the register. For example, say you averaged $1,000 balance throughout the year. On a 20% credit card, that's 200 bucks that you are just giving the credit card company.

I saw a couple comments about paying your bills, etc. Utility bills, cable bill, etc. do nothing to help your credit history. The only time they show up is when you're delinquent on them and they send you to a collection agency, which will be on your credit report.

Pay your credit cards and student loans on time, don't max the cards out, and you'll end up with a good credit score. If you can't afford it, don't buy it, that someone mentioned, is great advice.

  9. Kevin Devine never disappoints either on record or live. I've seen him 17 times and each time feels so unique. Whether it's solo or with the Goddamn band he always plays a different set list.

One of the more recent shows a little over a year ago was special; he played nearly 20 songs and then did Make the Clock Moves front to back.

  10. I don't understand why this movement isn't camping out in front of Congress. Congress makes the laws that allow the Wall Street folks to do business as they do. Change the laws and you'll change the way Wall Streetworks.

Theyre.going after.the organ grinder rather than the monkey.

It's stupid. Picketing on Wall Street will not make a difference. The only change in how the industry works comes from Congress. And now there are so many loons and anti-capitalist idiots running around OWS that the message becomes garbled.

  11. That whole last sequence when Walt is searching for the money and Skylar telling him she gave it to Beineke was just awesome.

I thought it looked like Walt was in a grave (6 feet under and in the dirt) as the episode ended. Foreshadowing? It would be fitting if he didn't make it out of this alive.

  12. ALL of it is retarded. The whole situation is, and the terrible political situation it highlights is pathetic. I was reading something the other day comparing it to the situation leading up to Shay's Rebellion and that in some political circumstances (the rebellion, slavery around the Civil War), there just isn't a possible way to compromise and one side in fact does have to just beat the other. This person said today's shithole seems like one of those situations. Compromising on some half-assed bill doesn't get us anywhere but back in the same place, so either we raise it and dramatically fix the problem, or don't raise it, crash ourselves and rebuild, we have to do one or the other.

Now what would your idea for fixing the problem be? I'm a huge proponent of cutting spending and raising taxes. It HAS to be a two pronged approach. You kinda can't have one without the other, as I don't think either will make a sizable dent in the problem. It's quite pathetic with the amount of political posturing and unwillingness to compromise. It honestly seems as though there's no room to work with one another because both sides are so brazenly stubborn, it's completely destroyed any chance of a compromise.

I hate that the Republicans are so against tax increases. It's become a total squeeze on the middle class. When you've got something like 5% of the population holding 90% of the wealth and paying zero taxes, there's a severe problem.

You realize that the richest Americans already pay the bulk of all taxes, right? The top 25% of all earners paid 86% of all income taxes. The top 50% pay 97% of all income taxes.

In fact the bottom 50%'s average tax rate is 2.59%, meaning they are already not paying much income tax.

  13. This doesn't sound at all like a pyramid scheme. A pyramid scheme is when someone gives you money and you pay them back with others' money.

Sounds like a small company sales position. If you need the money, go for it. It is definitely a commissions based job, though. You get a small base pay ($300/week, which is basically minimum wage) plus commissions.

  14. Far - At Night We Live - just so bad compared to their earlier work

Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me - Some of the songs and lyrics just make me cringe

Mae - Singularity - There's a reason they hardly touched this album on their past few tours.

If we're talking a band that just released a fluke album then I'd say Foo Fighters - One by One - sucks compared to their other stuff.
