I am in the same exact boat as you. Have gotten so use to the P&P ease of digital that setting up a decent TT seems daunting. There are many YouTube videos that go over how to set up a TT and the more I watch my confidence increases and the easier it seems to be. Now I'm not at all worried about set up and just concentrating on getting the best TT/Cart/Preamp combination I can find within my budget. Besides, it is highly recommended you re-check whatever has been pre-installed for you as sh*t happens, as they say.

Yeah, I've already looked at a few videos and I guess I just have to give it a shot if I want to jump in at the higherish end. I'm also posting to see if one of the more experienced users goes "No way" or "That combo wouldn't work / isn't a good fit" or something.

Red Dream and Iron Wire & A Canary is my pick.

Yes, mine as well! Had those on repeat back then.

Thankfully Dog Knights will be distributing good bitrates of this thing + it should be super easy to get some 320s.

I hope they still send out Bandcamp links. It's rather annoying to me that many of these distribution services just send out iTunes rips. I rather keep using the scene release in those cases.

I picked up a purple swirl for someone at HMV a few months ago for someone. It may still be available. This is the one right?

Can anyone help me out on the various "Purple Swirl" variants for Fortress? There's "Purple Swirl" on discogs, which I thought is this, but the seller says it looks different and more like marble. I also seem to remember that there's something special about that release with the band name in gold? Then there's this old "Purple Swirl" listing from 2011.  I also find pictures of some semi-transparent "Purple Swirl", it's just really confusing.

    My incomplete guesses now:

    - First Purple Swirl from 2008 with band name in white which came out looking more like marble [on discogs]

    - Second Purple Swirl from 2011 on MerchNOW [not on discogs]

    - Third Purple Swirl from 2013 at HMV with band name in gold which is the picture above [not on discogs]

  4. Good to hear! It didn't even cross my mind that the design of the RPM line allows for easier switching. I thought about going with 2M blue and I just noticed that RPM also has an n/c option, which would allow for that.

After some consideration though I think blue would be overkill at the moment and I like the Debut look more. As I understood it I can (and have to at some point) switch the stylus and I can just put a blue one into the pre-installed red cartridge, so I think I end up doing that in a year or so.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. I went with color.

This is why level 2 membership is the best, everything's going to come to me all at once at the end of the year plus I'll get a shipping refund.

Is that indicated by "Member Hold" in the order history? I was wondering what's up with that. I have 2 orders with that status, but I'm not a member.

  6. Hi,

I plan on building my first setup before the end of the year. I didn't know much about audio hardware before the vinyl bug bit me, so I'd like to get some input on my thoughts.

Overall I don't want to go super cheap and end up with something that is just inferior to my PC setup, a Scarlett 2i4 USB audio interface (~$200) and two Adam A3X monitors (~$600).

    I'm currently eyeing:

    • Turntable: Debut Carbon Esprit SB (Generally recommended, I'd like to easily switch 33/45)
    • Speakers: Nubert nuLine 24 or maybe 34 (Bigger bookshelf speakers, fit my room)
    • Amplifier: AMC XIA 50 (Good reviews and apparently a rather good built-in phono preamp)

I think I'll be fine with that turntable and those speakers, but the amp is kinda just the one that first caught my eye. There's also the XIA 30 with 30/40 W instead of 45/60 W, which might just be enough power for those speakers?

In general I'm not sure if there's maybe a better option. I looked through some of the other recommendations in that price range (~$500), but I have a hard time figuring out if one might be the better choice.

    My amp requirements:

    • According to the Beginner's Guide I want an integrated amp, no receiver
    • I don't need anything particularly powerful or loud
    • I only ever intend to run 2 speakers
    • A good built-in phono preamp, I don't think I want to buy one separately
    • I don't need a built-in DAC

On that last point, I also want to use that amp and speakers for my PC, so my USB audio interface would plug into the amp. This would work, right? Just want to make sure.

Lastly, really helpful Beginner's Guide, thanks slinch.

  7. I can't wait for these to ship. I might have to Scott Pilgrim (movie, haven't read the books) this shit (remember that scene where he sat at the door waiting for his package to get there? That'll be me)

I've haven't seen the movie (yeah, I probably should), but with my luck I have to take a 2 hour detour on lunch break to pick my package up from customs, so no waiting by the door for me.  <_<
