Thrift store turntables can be amazing. If you check regularly you'll find the turntable/console system that grandpa bought back in the day for a fair amount of money, and kept in pretty good condition. Look for the older dual systems.

^^ You'd actually be surprised at how many people listen to all styles around here. Yes, punk is the prevalent preferred genre of a lot, but for the most part, it's very varied.

I mostly listen to hardcore, metal, punk, and indie...but also into a few others.

That was cool; ahead of the pack for his time it seems. The audience doesn't know how to react - so they assume it's comedy, and laugh. Wrong audience for that guy, but I guess back then getting on TV was the mother of all advertising.

you can get master laquers pressed in Toronto, but the last replication plant i was aware of went belly up...they were in Quebec.

I saw that ad as well - when you go to their website, there is zero information on pressing, which gives me the initial impression that they are a broker for a pressing plant...

oh yeah, save extra for shipping and taxes for importing at the border. It's not a big deal, but it will easily run between one and two grand for those things right there, for an order of 1000 12" records. Also, look at the fine print with some of the pressing plants in the US. Some of them are cool, while others will do things like charging several hundred dollars just to ship test pressings to you. Not for the manufacture of the test pressings, just to put 5 records in a box and ship them to Canada!!! Like it's 1987 and the CND dollar is worth nothing!!!

Being very old! I have lots of 80's New Wave/Goth type stuff: Teardrop Explodes, Echo & The Bunnymen, Ultravox, Bauhaus etc etc, and I'm not into getting rid of any of it, I actively search for similar stuff in 2nd hand shops!

On a personal level I feel that during that time there wasn't the care taken in the production of vinyl, much of it is very flimsy and the packaging was rarely very interesting either!!

agreed....the packaging, and artwork often looked like an afterthought, or something put together by committee. A fair bit of those records were recorded in amazing rooms, and they sound quite good sonically.

I kept waiting to hear something crazy for a breakdown and then the dual voices sort of made me question what was going to happen next. Props for the cool futuristic flying/sci-fi sounds I could get into this also the ending was intense.

Thanks man; I got some of those sounds by amping up a cello and trying to blow it up through a speaker!

Ha haa. Actually, you've given me a great idea - Im gonna be a beatnik for halloween this year.

What record is that?

blanketbyday is correct...it's a test press of my first record; i've called it the "last night of your life". It was pretty cool spinning it for the first time...I really didn't know what to expect. I had my mixes mastered for vinyl, sent it away for plating and here it is at last!

I unwrapped and just dropped the needle, for the very first time, on the very first test press that I just got in the mail. I decided to record the moment in this video, because out of nothing, finally comes something. It's been years of hoping and planning...but sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to. I was just thinking of all the things that I've been through in the past few years, and all the days and nights that we had to lash out, or keep our heads low, to make this a reality. All those years have come home now - etched in this medium - it's what people do to remember the things they respect the most. I love this format. It's done something to my music that I can't quite comprehend as yet. My record player feels alive.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this event. Im pretty blown away by seeing all the events of my adult life etched in vinyl.

Im doing this myself for the first time with my debut record.

As you can see from the video in one of the above posts, there is a lot of craft and experience that goes into it - so it's quite a different experience than with producing purely digital work.

The great thing about vinyl is that it is a total escape from the "volume wars" that totally plague digital medium...its refreshing to work this way.

I've said it before and I will opine again: GZ is a horrible pressing plant that is good for one thing - making gimmicky records that are appealing visually (+/–) only. I wish to hell labels would stop using them or that Pirates Press would contract with a US plant (like my favorite – RTI) and at least give folks a choice between sonics and novelty.

I'd rather have it on black than an umpteenth 3 color haze that sounds like utter shite.

My understanding is that the multicolours may suffer from increased noise, and certain colours were worse at doing that (according to the notes that GZ sent me).

You know its interesting - this is my first pressing - and i had/have no idea what to expect. When I went around and contacted 6 active pressing plants, asking for standard quotes/turn around times, half of the plants wouldn't even return my emails - just simply ignored them, and wouldnt respond through to the quote generators on their websites! And i was sitting there ready to hand over the cash!

There were two plants that i contacted that seemed like they had their shit together. I eventually decided to go with GZ, partly because they were professional from the beginning. When i first heard of them, i was like - woah...am i gonna send all this money oversea's to a post-communist state that i really now nothing about, other than they launched some great shit into the sky (sputnik cosmonauts!!!). But they've got english rep's, and any questions i got, they answer in 24 hours. They actually taught me alot about the process. Plus, they cut DMM...we'll see what these test pressings sound like...

white vinyl it is....i think it would have to sound like absolute ass in order to make me switch to another colour at this point. I view the colour of the vinyl as an extention of the sounds on the record, if that makes any sense...it's like mood lighting, and i can add or contrast the look with the sounds that are going to blast out of it....

If my test pressing's are done in black, then i'll be able to A/B in uber detail...

Im very close to pressing my first set of records. At the last second, before sending off the order, I've received a note from the plant that suggests that certain colours (solid colours) may result in higher noise/less fidelity that transparent colours, or black. Is it true? Is it noticeable enough to make a difference? Will my white vinyl pressing have noticeably less fidelity?
