To me (the OP), it's not so much a question of wanting hifi sound or not - I already have that with the hifi setup. If I want to truly sit and listen to vinyl/hifi/etc., then I would do it in front of my current setup sitting in the optimal position for the loudspeakers (which I do and will continue to do). However, in a party setting, etc., I would like to be able to play the hifi giddyup but also play ambient music throughout the house. The main issue is that we are moving to a new home and I don't know how easy it will be to run speaker wire to where I want to put speakers, so I am considering wireless as an alternative. In terms of products available, Sonos is the one I know of the best but perhaps there are alternatives.

Thanks tooclosetosee. I have a Rega RP1 so there is no preamp in the turntable. The Marantz handles amplification, so the player plugs straight into the Marantz and then the source would pass from the Marantz to the Sonos:Connect.

Thanks guys. I searched the forum here but didn't find too much in regards to this topic. The audiophile quality will reside with our current hifi setup, but I would like to throw in music on the deck, in the living/dining room, etc., that would be more ambient quality than direct listening (thinking parties, etc.). I could see a wireless stereo speaker setup on the deck perhaps. One more question - what would be a good way to run both Sonos and my current setup (a Marantz amp) at the same time? I know (at least I think I do) that I can hook the Sonos amp to the Marantz Rec Out but I'm not sure if it will still play the phono input through the hifi speakers connected to the Marantz? If so, I'm assuming there are no ohm requirements from the Sonos so I shouldn't need to be worried about overheating the amp? Hope this makes sense

Good point! The LPs would still be through the hifi but would allow for the music to be shared through the whole house albeit not at the same quality

Hi all, if I want to run my Hi Fi system through my whole house (including the back deck) would Sonos speakers be a good way to go?

Hi all, I have a Marantz amp that I love for handling my turntable. However, I am thinking about running my TV audio through it as well. The problem is the Marantz does not have digital audio inputs.any quality DACs out there that might do the job and not break the bank?

I ended up getting the Dali Zensor 5s and am quite pleased. For the space, great sound and good bass with the volume on the low end. For a bigger bass sound or bigger space, the 7s would work, but they are substantially larger. The 5s have worked fantastic for me.

Thanks guys. I ended up compromising with the wifey on size and went with the Dali Zensor 5s with white grills. The size and look is perfect for the room, and I'm pleased with the sound. Much better than the crappy little speakers I was using to be sure. Definitely loud enough for the space (they fill the whole first floor with sound with the volume not turned up very loud).

I read recently that Frank Zappa's Apostrophe (') album was released in stereo and quadrophonic formats when it came out. For a stereo hifi setup, would the stereo format be better?

Hi there, I'm relatively new to a return to vinyl (6 mos+), and this whole time I've been trying to figure out how to find a good copy of David Bowie's Hunky Dory that most closely resembles the original recording. I headed to Discogs and looked around in the 1971 LP releases, and it looks like folks are selling them between $30 - $50 (which is what I would expect... I bought a VG+ copy of Ziggy Stardust from the original year and it was comparable). So my question is this... is there a way to tell which pressings were done from original recordings? I'm not picky if it was from 1971 or not, but I'm at a loss to figure out how to find the differences between releases. My instinct is to find one at a reasonable price from one of the UK, Canadian, or US releases from 1971, but I'm not sure if this is the right way to do this

The only Sonus Faber Veneres I can find are at $3500 a pair. Are there models comparable in the $1,200/pair price range? I'm having a hard time locating these for sale.

Thanks slinch. The room is a 16'x15' family room that opens up into an open kitchen and a long hall to the front of the house (a moderately large area with a two story ceiling). Is there a way to tell if this would be a good "fit"? If that is not large enough, would the Dali Zensor 5s be a decent alternative? Also, I'm assuming "Nominal Impedance [Ω]: 6" means 6 ohms? My amp will go to 4 using one output but if both A/B are selected it is rated for 8 ohms. I'm guessing these would be too powerful if I wanted to run these and, say, outdoor speakers at the same time? Really appreciate the help!

Back with more speaker questions - can anyone comment on the Dali Zensor 7 speakers? It looks like I can get them for $1,200 as a pair. I know I've been picky about aesthetics around here... this time I'm looking for glossy white floorstanding speakers, and these fit the bill. Any comments on the Dali Zensor 7s?

Hey Tardcore, thanks! The room is our family room, 16'x15'. It opens up to the kitchen and the open part of our house leading to the front door.

These are available on eBay for $375 a pair refurbished straight from Polk. For a budget system, would these be a good choice? I know I've posted here recently but these will be connected to a Marantz PM5004 for vinyl music primarily, some digital.

Just received the Marantz PM5004 and Rega RP1 w/Performance Pack yesterday. The combo of the two is great and I am extremely happy with the sound. Spun vinyl with friends until wee hours of the morning and everyone agreed the sound was fantastic. You guys have been awesome in helping narrow this down. Thank you! Listening to the mono recording of Revolver as I post this and loving it.

There is an A/B speaker selection on the PM5004,so I will hook up two sets of speakers. The site I ordered from was out of the Carbon Debut Esprit (they called today). They swapped the Rega RP1 with the performance pack at the price of the Esprit. Fate flipped my coin back to me, Rega it is!

The connections on the amplifier end are standard speaker jacks built into the wall next to all the other speakers. I guess I could take the plate off and post a pic?

Thank you! There is a volume control knob on the wall for the outdoor speakers, so perhaps a small amp is involved somewhere. I'm excited for my first hifi setup and am grateful for everyone's input. Look forward to seeing how it sounds.

Thanks allenh for the reply! We have some outdoor speakers that are wired into the house, and I am hoping that I would be able to run music through both the main speakers next to the TT and potentially through the outdoor speakers at the same time (i.e. if we were hosting a party, etc.). Will that work? That is really all I need here... we have some other speakers built-in around the house, but I don't see us using them much. I just would like the main room speakers and the outdoor speakers to be run at the same time (i.e. A and B going at the same time) and don't want to overstress the amp.

After everyone's help and talking to a few vendors, I settled in on the following: 1. Marantz PM5004 - hard to beat on the price at $349 2. Pro-Ject Audio Debut Carbon DC Esprit SB 3. Audioengine B1 Premium Bluetooth Music Receiver I have not bought speakers yet but those will be a follow up purchase after testing my current speakers. I do have a question on setup of the receiver and speakers, though. The manual to the amplifier lists the following impedance: 1. Speaker A Only: 4 - 16 Ω 2. Speaker B Only: 4 - 16 Ω 3. Speakers A and B: 8 - 16 Ω From our discussion above, I didn't think this receiver could play two pairs of speakers at once, but the impedance chart seems to suggest it can? Also, what would the max input impedance of the speakers be that I could support? Would two pairs of 8 ohm speakers work? I don't want to damage the amp, of course
