  1. Looking for advice from you fine folks:

I am moving to a new office and want to set up the "most ideal" TT setup I can there.

I suspect I will listen to headphones 2/3 of the time (already have the headphones), and through speakers the other 1/3. It doesn't need to be loud (it's a small office after all).

TOP priority is overall sound quality, clearest, crispest sound I can get.

HOWEVER, there are budgetary limits of course. I really don't want to spend too much more than $300-$400 on the TT. Then the rest of the components can't be too much either. Let's say an overall budget of no more than $600-$700 or so.  This is likely something I can expense - so I'd also be buying new (as opposed to Craigslist).

I've seen the recent article on VMP about setups for under $1000. That was a good read and good starting point, I just wanted to see if anyone else has a specific setup that they love that meets these parameters.

So in summary, TT + speakers + whatever will allow me to listen through headphones (preamp and/or receiver), best sound possible, small office, under $700.

I might be asking for a lot, but any advice would be great!!

  2. Thanks for the note on Pyles - those prices online are enticing, but I had a really bad gut feel about them.

I ended up finding a pair of Boston Acoustic CR57's on Craigslist for $25.  At that price even if they aren't perfect, I can live them I assume (and from what I've read, they actually sound like they could be solid speakers, and they fit the space I have to work with perfectly).  So hopefully I'm all set!

  3. Just getting my setup going here, and need a set of speakers.  Did a ton of research and ended up buying the Micca mb42x's from Amazon.  Only problem is that they are a 4 ohm speaker, and my receiver won't handle anything lower than 8 ohms.  Rookie mistake!

So now I'm looking for a new set.  These speakers themselves are about 9" tall, and that's absolutely as big as I'd want to go (which probably rule out speakers such as the Sony SS-B1000).  This is a pretty small room (home office) and the speakers would just sit on my desk.

Two options that seem popular on Amazon are made by Pyle.  Not thrilled by the reviews though.

Any suggestions?  I'd sure like to keep them under $100 too if at all possible.

  4. Looks like today's special at PopMarket is Tommy and Quadrophenia - the remastered versions.

I happen to be looking for a copy of Tommy, and while I have Quadrophenia (my favorite album) already, I'd love a better version of it.  I'm always skeptical of "remasters" as I don't want to end up with a "CD on Vinyl."  Anyone own these already and care to weigh in?

This Tommy version is the Kevin Gray remaster from 2013.  The Quadrophenia is the 2011 remaster but there aren't a lot of additional details.

If not these, which versions should I be on the lookout for?

  5. Hey all, bumping this as I'm BRAND new to the forum and seeking out a small cabinet / shelf system for my turntable.  I like the Expedit / Kallas from Ikea but I don't really want a 1 x 4 (just fear it's not going to be sturdy enough since I only have enough width in my music room to stand it vertically).  A 1x2 is probably ideal, but it looks like Wal-Mart has this shelf in a 1 x 3.

Anyone else get this since this was posted last year?  How is it?  Sturdy?  Somewhat heavy duty?  Any issues with TT vibration?
