for me i think it depends on how much i like the record and how much money i had at the time..... which is probably the case for a lot of people. but having both options available would take care of the rares really quick and it might be hard to save some for the 50/50 group.

I agree. If it were one of my favorite bands, I would pay the extra for the guarantee. Other than that, it would come down to how much money I had.
