  1. I recommend having two (unless you're backing up your main hard drive's contents): One as a master and one as a backup. I've had both good luck and bad luck despite taking care of them all the same.

    yea, this is true. I actually have 3. One that backs up my laptop (via time machine), one that has all my music on it (western digital passport, very small usb powered, very portable), and a 1 TB western digital mybook that I back everything up onto again.

  2. never heard of doing that. how do you go about doing it? buy a regular SATA internal hard drive? then a casing? I didn't see any on that site Sam suggested. I'm clueless about this.

    Yep, you buy an internal hard drive and a case that'll mate up with it. You can even use laptop drives for more portability.
