If your stylus rested perfectly on the same plane as your media then you'd have an effective tracking weight of 0 (or pretty darn close). Considering that the balance point is way back by the opposite end of the tonearm, it makes sense that you'd see a bit of a dip passed the platter since you are purposefully front-loading 1.5g of force on the stylus end.

Just to be sure - it was unclear to me from your description whether you set the tracking force or actual tonearm counterweight to a value  of "1.5g". You used a tracking force gauge or other type of scale on top of your platter to measure the 1.5g under the stylus, correct?

    The steps I did:

    1. Set Anti-Skate to "0"

    2. Balance the tone arm by twisting the counterweight
    3. Set the spinner to "0"
    4. Twist counterweight (and spinner) to recommended number ... 1.5
    5. Set Anti-Skate to same number as counterweight ... 1.5

Maybe I'm just paranoid about the lifespan of the vinyl. It's probably set up correctly but I just want to be certain.

    Hi there,

I have a Sony PS-T2 with a N 70B stylus. The cartridge is black and says "Sony" but there are no apparent markings or model number...
This is my first turntable with adjustable tone arm and I have followed the Sony PS-T2 user manual exactly but it gets to a part when it says, "recommended tracking-force figure for your cartridge" and I have no idea how to find this out.

I have been reading forums and it seems everyone is either saying 2 or 1.5.

I set it to 1.5 to be on the safe side (since I don't want to damage the vinyl) but the stylus rests about an inch lower than the surface of the slip mat. Is this normal? After spending all afternoon watching tutorials and reading the manual, there is not a single image or video that shows a closeup of how the properly balanced tone-arm should look. In each tutorial, they get to the last step and then basically say, "and you're finished! Enjoy!" but that isn't helpful to a beginner like me who has no visual reference to work with.

In my amateur opinion, it just seems like the stylus hanging about an inch below the slip mat would be too much pressure, no?
I am also afraid if there is not enough pressure, it could also damage the vinyl. This process isn't too complicated because the steps are pretty black and white but what does the finished product look like? Should the stylus tip be slightly above, slightly below or exactly at the surface of the slip mat when it's balanced correctly?

When someone puts this much effort into their record collection they are over compensating for something that is missing in their life.

You don’t mention any friends, family, significant other, pets, career.

    Missing?

Like a real, tangible culture? Artists who care about what they are creating? Music that lasts forever not just a weekend?

    Yeh...

It will likely be fine. Records are tough. The airline will probably put them through special handling, similar to instruments (and the flight cases look like instrument cases, which isn’t a bad thing), so they probably won’t go on the baggage belts. Take the valuable stuff as carry-on, pack everything with LPs outside the jackets to prevent seam splits, and get straps for the checked ones so they don’t pop open.

I will attempt this as soon as I can get a visa.

Theoretically it can be done. Taking a US/EU Delta flight as an example, you can check up to 10 bags. A flight case of 70 LPs shouldn’t be too heavy (~45 lbs). You’d need four of those for 280 LPs. You take the remaining 20 LPs in a small bag as your personal item, one flight case as your carry-on, and you get one checked free if you’re not on a Basic Economy fare. Third one is $100, and the fourth one is $285, for total fees of $385, not including the cost of the cases (probably $200-300). So maybe you can do it for under $700 if you’re just taking records, but if you need to check any other bags, it’s another $285 each.

Yeh, if I can get a visa to legally leave the country, I will be able to try and manage all that. Sounds like a plan... still worried that they will destroy them though.

I think the most I've taken on a plane at one time was twenty. It was a hassle but I have a dj bag that was specifically made for transporting records and it ended up being worth it because I got them all signed at a specific show. I imagine checking a large number of records would be a receipt for disaster. Like rooks said its extremely heavy and expensive; shipping them would likely be a better option.

DHL quoted me at about $300 to ship 15 vinyl...

300 at once is going to be very tough. Airlines won’t allow you to check anything over a certain weight (often 70 or 100 lbs depending on the route/airline). So you’d have to check multiple items, and the excess baggage/overweight fees will be nuts.

Consider taking a small carryon case of the most valuable ones, and then looking into freight shipping for something like this for the rest: https://www.amazon.com/Odyssey-CLP200P-Carpeted-Recessed-Hardware/dp/B0002DVBRQ

That looks amazing. My rough estimate is that it will be about 85 pounds when full. Paying that extra fee will be worth it but I'm going to see if maybe they have half-sized ones so I can check them at about 40 pounds each and avoid customs hassle.

I traveled back and forth from the USA to Germany for four years with a case like this:

It holds about 25 LPs and I was really happy with it. I used it as my carry-on; I have never put vinyl records in checked baggage.

The Greats of Jazz collector set has much more than 25 LPs alone... I think this will be a bit of a process. I'll have to buy plane tickets for the whole neighborhood.

    Checking anything is my nightmare...
They probably have larger versions of that case which may work well but I'm thinking there are about 300 I need to transport and preferably all at once.

You may need to adjust your tracking force? Did you do that when you set up your system? (Also, people can't don't get notified your responded to them unless you quote or tag them.)

The only adjustable option I see is this thin knob on the arm that is connected to a spring and I haven't touched it because I don't want to mess anything up.

  11. Hi everyone,

I'm completely new at all of this and maybe I'm paranoid but I want the best for my vinyl so I am going to keep asking questions...

Right now, the song is playing through the stylus. I've never had a turntable before and nobody warned me about it. Is this normal? Is this damaging the stylus or the vinyl?

    Thanks!
