Recorded over the last two years in between visual commissions and more through-composed heady works such as “Sarava Exu” and “A Song for Echo”, “Machine to Machine” represents Donoso's return to the songbook format for the first time since 2012. Influenced by the work of Edward Bernays, Gustave Le Bon and Ernest Dichter - wherein past efforts have seen Donoso looking inwards, “Machine to Machine” has him looking outward - incorporating subliminal advertising techniques such as backmasking, ZMET and steganography, “Machine to Machine” is a meditation on priming with and without awareness and a treatise on the psychophysics of our contemporary age. “Machine to Machine”'s collection of songs are Donoso's most versatile yet, incorporating all major elements from his discography into a unified album. There is something for everyone on “Machine to Machine”, and that is well the point, a vast range of emotion eliciting stimuli for your consumption. RICARDO DONOSO is a composer, percussionist and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who currently resides in Boston. After having studied composition at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory he has participated in a slew of projects over the years, most notably playing drums for avant-death metal unit Ehnahre and being one half of the ever morphing electronic duo Perispirit. With a body of work that cannot be neatly categorized, his music is marked by a sound that is both hallucinatory and intensely physical, and an aesthetic engagement with the role of mysticism in contemporary life. Born in Minnesota, Diaz de Leon expanded from his early years in metal and hardcore punk to immerse himself in the work of 20th century composers Scelsi, Ligeti, Dumitrescu, and Xenakis, free improvisation, a wide range of electronic music, and noise / industrial music. Based in NYC since 2004, he completed a doctorate in music composition at Columbia University, while also immersing himself in NYC's experimental, noise, and underground metal scenes. His debut album as composer, "Enter Houses Of", was released in 2009 on John Zorn's Tzadik label and praised by the New York Times for its "hallucinatory intensity". The album marked a key point in his association with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), now acclaimed as “the new gold standard for new music" (The New Yorker). As a solo performer, he is active under the name Oneirogen (o-NI-ro-jen), a project known for its merging of ethereal synths, brutal distortion, and noise influences. Since 2012, Oneirogen has toured internationally and released two full lengths and one EP on the Denovali label. "The Soul is the Arena" is the long awaited follow up to his 2009 composer debut, and the first release of his classical works for Denovali. The album's three tracks find Diaz de Leon deepening his collaboration with the core members of ICE, now a decade long. The mythological trope of the labyrinth, where a winding path leads to a central event that demands a fundamental change of direction, features heavily in the album's blend of acoustic and electronic elements, where a wide variety of ideas are unified by continuous momentum and arresting points of climax. "Luciform" and "The Soul is the Arena" pit virtuosic performances by soloists Claire Chase (flute) and Joshua Rubin (bass clarinet) against an array of vivid electronic textures. These range in character from doom-laden sub-bass to abrasive synthetic cacophony, recalling both Wolf Eyes and the early electronic works of Stockhausen. The elegiac "Portals Before Dawn" is written for a sextet of woodwinds, piano, percussion, and features Diaz de Leon himself on synthesizer. Reducing the density of the previous pieces to its essence, the work unfolds over 20 haunting minutes, transporting the listener through a boundless landscape of rising and falling intensities. Visionary and immersive, this is a bold body of work from an emerging master of modern composition. Thanks a lot Denovali www.denovali.com/store www.denovali.com/mp3store HIDDEN ORCHESTRA - REORCHESTRATIONS CD | 12'' | DIGITAL This new collection of Joe Acheson's 'Reorchestrations' (including two previously unreleased tracks) takes works by exceptional experimental/classical/folk musicians as source material, and passes them through Joe's studio where they are intricately reworked with the signature Hidden Orchestra composition and production techniques. The result is a cohesive new Hidden Orchestra album, consisting of tracks produced since 2012, and representing the best of the music to come out of Joe's studio since the last full Hidden album 'Archipelago'. Densely textured, the tracks are beat-driven, sophisticatedly chopped and reprogrammed - delicate classical textures and field recordings with deep bass and complex layers of acoustic drums. Unlike many remixes, these sensitive and non-destructive 'Reorchestrations' mostly leave the original track intact, and add layers of rhythms and notes which extend the arrangements and subvert the harmonies of the original tracks – resulting in expansive augmented reinterpretations rather than complete reworkings. This release is the first volume in a series of Reorchestrations albums. The project started with a remix of Liverpool band Kinetic Fallacy - which eventually became the track The Revival when Kinetic Fallacy disbanded, and has since become a staple encore of Hidden Orchestra live performances - hence its inclusion as the final track on this release. The two unreleased tracks are reworkings of members of the Hidden Orchestra live ensemble – Poppy Ackroyd (violin/piano), and Mary Macmaster (harps). There are also remixes of Hidden collaborator and occasional live guest clarinettist Tomas Dvorak (AKA Floex), Russian producer Long Arm, Anglo-French duo Piano Interrupted, and Czech clarinet quartet Clarinet Factory. Hidden Orchestra is the solo studio project of multi-instrumentalist composer/producer Joe Acheson. This 'electronic music by acoustic means' project has steadily gained a broad and diverse cult following since the release of albums 'Night Walks' (2010) and 'Archipelago' (2012) on Tru Thoughts Records and Denovali Records, and touring in over 30 countries with the acclaimed live band (featuring pianist/violinist Poppy Ackroyd, double drummers Jamie Graham and Tim Lane, plus regular live guests and visual artists). This album is the result of one person sitting alone in a room and creating something entirely personal, without the frustrations of organising large-scale sessions for other players or the laborious work of preparing scores. In fact, the few scored moments that were written were later disregarded, with a whole string session with PETER BRODERICK ending up on the cutting-room floor (sorry, Peter!), along with endless hours of other material. What is left is the condensed diary of a year of exploring old tape delays, analog synths and percussion - some of which played by percussionist/composer SYTZE PRUIKSMA (a member, along with Haines, of THE ALVARET ENSEMBLE, whose debut album was released in December 2012 by Denovali Records), and some of which played and recorded in a midnight daze at Haines' studio in Berlin. Working in this way led to a whole host of other long-term influences feeding into the music that had never found an outlet before. The experiments in dub conducted by the likes of KING TUBBY or LEE PERRY and continued by the likes of RHYTHM & SOUND had a profound effect, as did the iconic work of TONY ALLEN and other African composers. The spaced-out soundscapes found on early TANGERINE DREAM and KLAUS SCHULTZE had always had a subtle influence on Greg's work, but now armed with an arsenal of dusty studio toys, those sounds became warmer, richer and more prominent. The influences evoked here may at first appear at odds with Greg's previous work, but an affinity between the dense poly-rhythms of Africa and beyond have long been an influence for contemporary composers such as STEVE REICH, and their reach and importance on western music is undeniable. But now the lines have been blurred, and its impossible to say where one “style” or influence stops and another begins – something that was perhaps the only concept for this record. The symphonic synth crescendo of “So it Goes” would not have the same impact if it were not following the head- nodding drive of “Something Happened”. The delicate arpeggios of “Wake Mania Without End II” only exaggerate the unrelenting, rhythmical explosion of “Habenero”, and without starting with the intimate piano of “The Intruder”, the album's cavernous ending wouldn't feel so otherworldly. Its all in there or at least whats left of it after the hiss, the dirt and the degradation of the tape machine destroyed it, reworked it, and spat it back out fullyformed. CELESTE are back with a new full length. In times where other metalbands copy their last full length or try to catch attention with a new producer for every new record CELESTE are just trying to extend their sound and the intensity with every new song. And they did it again. They again wrote a heavier, better, darker full length than the last time. And... in this context they enhanced their unique, incomparable sound with new elements: they interlaced well fitting samples and for the first time they experimented with guest musicians and new instruments. Two people from LES FRAGMENTS DE LA NUIT joined them with piano and strings. CELESTE and piano & strings? Yes. And it fits perfectly. Naturally they again created a new level of denseness in their sound – and that's maybe the reason why they found so many new fans in several genres during the past 10 years. From black metal to sludge, from doom to posthardcore – the people love them because they're not copycats – they're not trying to exhaust any genre clichés - they're creating their own dark soundscapes with every new record. Seven songs (more than 40 minutes) of pure hopelessness and distress. Taking the exhilaratingly huge sonic expanse that Petrels has become known for and pushing it further still, Flailing Tomb draws on a breathtaking sonic palette of influences and instrumentation to craft perhaps the strongest Petrels release to date. Flailing Tomb's underlying theme is a many-layered obsession with – and joyous celebration of – the defiance in persisting with lost causes. Building on the mythological foundations of previous albums – Haeligewielle, Onkalo and Mima – Flailing Tomb takes an underlying current that ran beneath each of these and pushes it to the fore. Flailing Tomb draws inspiration from sources as wide-ranging as Ursula K. Le Guin's speculative fiction, Indian-Celtic connections, self-mummification, Jude The Apostle (patron saint of lost causes), and Jean-Luc Godard's seminal sci-fi masterpiece, Alphaville (much of the second-half of the album is adapted from music originally written as an alternate score to the film), weaving all this and more into six intricately-layered parts - at once forthright and ambiguous. The Coma Lilies from Santa Rosa (US) being active between 2002 and 2008 toured the US three times, released two records and played an experimental mix of electronic elements, jazz, trash and postrock. KOSMOS – BASTARDS CD | 12'' | DIGITAL AH! KOSMOS is the moniker of Istanbul-based producer and instrumentalist Başak Günak. Two years from the release of her Flesh EP, AH! KOSMOS is announcing her self-produced, full-length debut for Denovali Records called BASTARDS due out in April 2015. This release will be accompanied by a re-issue of the debut EP FLESH, released for the first time on a world-wide scale and on the vinyl format. BASTARDS digs deeply into the surface and soon turns that hole into a living space, a home for all. Albeit Bastards are not orphans, but they are freed from models or possessions and reckon no top or bottom, no right or wrong. In these interstices, a band of un-mastered sounds and voices are composing a brotherhood of a new kind. This fatherless community of differents that gather and fall apart, meet and clash, now unfolds the horizon of infinite lines and curves, feverish desires and endless sympathies. Spaced-out layers of beats and blissed-out sounds and textures create a sense of slow, echoic wonder that eventually builds to a multi-rhythmic universe of its own. Supporting the likes of DARKSIDE, James Holden, Kiasmos, Two Door Cinema Club, Emika, Daddy G (Massive Attack) in her hometown Istanbul, AH! Beyond that he is a renowned composer for film and theater plays. His latest venture is the first of a sophisticated series of projects of modern classical music bearing the common title "Vantdraught". The first part of the "Vantdraught" series is called "Vantdraught 10" written for ten classical instruments - 4 violins, 2 violas, cello, vibraphone, marimba and piano. The music is largely based on a repetition of individual melodic motifs, which are also quite multithreaded within a given composition. Vibraphone, piano and marimba are written in a “push-pull” combination, being the rhythmical base for every piece, while strings are instantly “questioning and answering” each other whether being supportive to the rhythm or used for the presentation of themes. The common feature of every composition is symmetry, which has been applied to almost every aspect - rhythm, harmony, motifs and themes. The first four pieces of "Vantdraught 10", which are inspired by the works of classical minimalists and early 20th century composers, have been recorded in December 2014 with musicians from renowned Polish ensembles such as Neoquartet and Kwartludium at the concert studios of Radio Gdansk. "Vantdraught 10·Vol.1" will be released on Denovali Records in April 2015. For Vol. 2, which is following up, Kuba Kapsa will present a rather asymmetrical approach to voice leading and rhythm. "Vantdraught 10·Vol.1" features an astonishing artwork based on "Brotmorgendämmerung" (breaddawn) by the seminal artist duo Kahn & Selesnick. Poppy Ackroyd is a performer and composer from London who is currently based in Edinburgh. Classically trained on violin and piano, she fell in love with contemporary piano music and with the piano beyond the keys, discovering the world of sound that could be made from other parts of the instrument. Realising the violin had the same potential, she has spent the last few years composing delicate, intricate and beautifully atmospheric music by manipulating and multi-tracking sounds from these two instruments. Her debut album 'Escapement' stays true to this idea. Every sound, with the exception of a few field recordings, is created using only either the piano or the violin. The seven tracks are a combination of piano melodies and chords - played both conventionally or created inside the piano using fingers, e-bows and plectrums - violin textures, melodies and pizzicato riffs and finally delicate beats composed of hits, plucks, taps and scrapes made using hands, drumsticks, beaters and small cymbals on either the frame, strings or dampers of the piano. There are often five or more different percussive lines working alongside each other. (...) The bizarre Dark Jazz cabaret is opened again. After five years of waiting the 2nd full length of the sophisticated experimental collective from france finally saw the light of day in 2011. Feat. vocals of Gaelle Kerrien (YANN TIERSEN). All lovers of DAVID LYNCH movies, artists like KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE or BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE and blue cigarette smoke in dark bars exulted again. Métamanoir sees the band shift from their smooth, minimal and instrumental landscapes on the debut record Parole De Navarre to a more lively and rich sound. Always based upon improvisation and sound research, the solo parts of their music are now embodied by vocals. Always influenced by classic 50s cool jazz and the more contemporary noise and experimental styles, the Quartet and his guests built a dreamy card castle who swing and grow deeply rooted in fierce strangeness of David Lynch movies. March 2015 marks the release of The Eye of Time forthcoming album “ANTI”. Four letters taking us to the most extreme and darkest recesses, influenced by the likes of Third Eye Foundation, Portishead, Neurosis, DJ Shadow, Björk, Sigur Ros, Edvard Grieg, Sergei Rachmaninov or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. "ANTI" is darker than anything Marc Euvrie has created so far. The process of writing and recording took him 3 years. Right from the beginning the album was meant to be the dark side of "Acoustic", trying to sincerely translate a realistic point of view of our time into music: Industrial, despair, horrific. Where “Acoustic” was promising a glimpse of hope, “ANTI” is confronting us with despair – pitch-black and constricting. A long cry in the darkest night, turning against the world, and baring all the frustration; seeing the end of everything, but being incapable of talking. The few lighter shades scattered over the record convey a melancholic reference to something that is already dead. A brief review, seeing the beautiful things we made, the potential of humanity, considering that an end has been reached. "ANTI" is finishing with a more peaceful song, minimalistic, as if we had accepted our fate. The whole record is construed around the title song "ANTI". 14 minutes of sweeping industrial music leading into an apocalyptic finish screaming out loud along punishing beats. The EYE OF TIME's output was never supposed to be understood as resignation. There is no other option then showing society's open wounds and bringing up the most painful subjects, as it seems there is a strong need to face the darkest things before your very ears to finally wake up. Their eighth album ENGTANZ DEPRESSION (engl.: CLOSE DANCE DEPRESSION) expresses a significant progression of their material on the preceding album trilogy (Gottes Synthesizer, Sequencer Liebe, Messias Maschine). New drum sounds and acoustic instruments such as harmonium and piano may be found, and some pieces emerged from free improvisations, which is a completely new approach taken by this band. The album starts with "Urlaub Unter Psalmen" which builds up slowly, piles up further, just to completely disintegrate in the end. Klemm's typical E-bow guitar parts and the dubby baseline make this track a catchy tune. Next is "Beten, Tanzen, Küssen" which is the first Sankt Otten track ever where a harmonium appears. In combination with the minimal beat one could even think that this track is suitable for a club context, but the two musicians always manage to stay away just enough from the ordinary and remain slightly disturbing as ever. "Im Lichtorgelparadies" switches on the lights in paradise with a hypnotic synthesizer melody and the KRAFTWERK-like beat gives the track a floating ease. One of the album highlights is the 12-minute monster "Sing die Apokalypse", which is dominated by Otten's powerful, but always minimalistic drumming. After about 10 minutes the listener might think that the apocalypse has aleady arrived, but Sankt Otten move on and manage to even increase this feeling. The track ends unexpectedly and with a winking bow to the influential American electronic protopunks SUICIDE. However, Sankt Otten also demonstrate that they can still master the meditative sounds. Tracks like "Der Himmel ist voll" or "Die tragische Nummer" are quite far apart from average electronica. The titles of the tracks appearing on the album are as always a unique mixture of aphorisms, sarcasm and puns. In spite of the new directions explored on this album, SANKT OTTEN maintain their characteristic Holy Trinity of krautrock, ambient, and 80ies electronica. It's a creativity lab where complex cryptoanarchic ideas rigidify in the viscously flowing Phrygian mode, while the simple and naive piano melodies sweep the listener right back to childhood. Fogh Depot's debut album contains eight stories told by different people in different places. "Anticyclone" feels like a massive hedge-maze amidst towering sand dunes of apathetic lust. "Mining" – is a slow descent into a narrow, murky mine, now and then suddenly illuminated by the guide's flaring torch. Does he even know where he's leading his patrons? Sorrowful and strange, "Nevalyashka" is a nostalgic waltz, bringing to mind an old wooden attic where forgotten toys are gathering dust, while the clear and springy bass in "Sagittarius" can only be the belligerent footsteps of a mythical centaur. A cultural space existed in most traditional societies for such a period in a person's life and it was seen as necessary in order for the initiate to re-connect with their past and concomitantly with his collective unconscious, or humanity’s primordial existence. "Sarava Exu" was written throughout such a period - one of deliberate isolation and expressed and channeled through the sacred esoteric rituals of the Brazilian cult of Quimbanda. The musical suite moves through the Seven Lines & Kingdoms of Quimbanda incorporating traditional Candomblé rhythms, Brazilian percussion, noise as well as classical string instruments, all elements from Donoso's past, re-examined & re-interpreted. "Sarava Exu" is a symphonic poem of a Quimbanda ritual and the musical accompaniment of Descent into one's own personal hell. Their first installment, a six track album called “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy”, will be released on Denovali Records in January 2015. “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” was written and recorded live in a series of four hour sessions in a basement by the sea in County Cork in the south of Ireland; no computers, no playback of samples, no overdubs, no further processing after the event. It is three people performing live in an intensely personal collaboration. Knowing each other well and yet having never experimented together before, it felt almost like a necessity to combine their far-flung musical minds. Waves of sound created predominantly on guitar and clarinet, provide a backdrop for singing rarely experienced outside an opera house, and yet with a subtle connection to Irish folk song also. Inspired by the symbolism of photos, prints and memories, the studio floor was strewn with semi-precious melodies, never knowing which was to be picked up next, to be held and then polished like sea glass in a tidal soundscape. Tethering themselves to each other's innate sense of interpretation and improvisation, an idea was never good nor bad, it was instead either in or out, necessary or unnecessary. In making “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” SECOND MOON OF WINTER understood that true musical inspiration and output is free from grasping and clinging. Their fragmented melodies meet, form and fluctuate in a wave of musical metamorphosis. They strive to sit apart and yet within their soundscapes - melting and moving forward with the momentum of a creeping frost under the waning of the second moon. SECOND MOON OF WINTER is to be silent, to listen and finally to create a picture out of that listening. Their first installment, a six track album called “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy”, will be released on Denovali Records in January 2015. “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” was written and recorded live in a series of four hour sessions in a basement by the sea in County Cork in the south of Ireland; no computers, no playback of samples, no overdubs, no further processing after the event. It is three people performing live in an intensely personal collaboration. Knowing each other well and yet having never experimented together before, it felt almost like a necessity to combine their far-flung musical minds. Waves of sound created predominantly on guitar and clarinet, provide a backdrop for singing rarely experienced outside an opera house, and yet with a subtle connection to Irish folk song also. Inspired by the symbolism of photos, prints and memories, the studio floor was strewn with semi-precious melodies, never knowing which was to be picked up next, to be held and then polished like sea glass in a tidal soundscape. Tethering themselves to each other's innate sense of interpretation and improvisation, an idea was never good nor bad, it was instead either in or out, necessary or unnecessary. In making “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” SECOND MOON OF WINTER understood that true musical inspiration and output is free from grasping and clinging. Their fragmented melodies meet, form and fluctuate in a wave of musical metamorphosis. They strive to sit apart and yet within their soundscapes - melting and moving forward with the momentum of a creeping frost under the waning of the second moon. SECOND MOON OF WINTER is to be silent, to listen and finally to create a picture out of that listening. It is a meshing together of sounds that touch and clash in their different atmospheres yet bathe together in a tense harmonic understanding. “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” is a truly fascinating and deeply persuasive listen for enthusiasts of avant-garde, ambient, dark free jazz and contemporary classical music. December 2014 marks the release of two new solo records, N(35) „Saarn“ and N(36) „Heven“, both of them slightly entering aspects of drone he did not work on that much before. With both „Saarn“ and „Heven“, N is focusing on the use of vibrant distortion, but in distinctive different ways within the concept. The whole 3-track album „Saarn“ is determined by oscillations between heavy and minimal with a mood of (at least the danger of a coming) aggression even in its most silent parts. The opening piece, „Toevermanns Gruben“, is telling the story of an imaginary place buried under huge amounts of gritty fuzz, while „Seltene Erden“ keeps irritating with its movement in static. The closing piece, „Schwarze Heide“, then walks further the dark path that was first discovered with „Wehle“ (from N(22) „Goor“) some time before. „Heven“ in fact achieves very different results, even while using the same tools: way more ethereal, otherwordly in its atmosphere, proving that even the utmost minimalism can gain an intense feel of beauty, a fortiori when „Heven I“ changes from stuttering static to a broken melody before getting lost in its own memory, somehow. „Heven II“ finally just uses grainy white noise to built up a cathedral of feedbacks, infinitely reflected. On the more than ten past releases, TSS merged epic doom, post-rock and jazz with electronica, drum'n'bass, heavy dub and ethereal vocals into a style wholly unique. The new album 'Dust Songs', which sees its release in December 2014 on Denovali Records, is a logical extrapolation and a surprise at the same time. More than any other Terminal Sound System release, Dust Songs brings the voice well and truly to the front. The mainstays of voice and acoustic guitar are stretched and warped through failing technology, eroded and in a constant state of collapse. The stories here are important, but are shrouded in a haze of drone and hiss: a future artifact, an archeological discovery or malfunctioning transmission. The words and melodies have been reduced to their looped essence, no longer a linear narrative but something representing a mantra. Endlessly cycling - hoping, if not for transendence, then at least some kind of sense. Perhaps paradoxically (for all its reliance on looping) Dust Songs represents a shift away from "modern" production methods of tempo maps and recallable sounds and grids - rather, it was largely created in a linear fashion as one would work with a tape machine (and a razor and splicing block). Generally starting as a looped fragment of guitar, as the songs evolved they went through countless revisions, twists and turns and re-imaginings, so that the end result bears little resemblance to any of the original ideas. In a move that Skye Klein may well come to regret when it comes the time to perform them live, almost all of the sounds used were patched up on the spot and are essentially unrecallable. Klein finally adds: "(As usual) the lyrical (and musical) themes of Dust Songs contain deep meaning for me, and (as usual) this meaning has largely been obscured, warped and obfuscated. There is a story here, and it picks up shortly after the last one paused. I hope that these songs resonate with you, enough to create your own narrative." In mutual respect and appreciation, both DALE COOPER QUARTET and WITXES selected a track of their split companion and created a fundamental and independent rework of around 20 minutes length. Based upon parts of Witxes' "The Apparel" -- from the last album "A Fabric of Beliefs" -- and afternoon summer recording sessions, the DALE COOPER QUARTET's "Le Strategie Saint-Frusquin" contains the classic sounds of the Quartet: ambient soundscapes, lazy jazzy rhythms, drone and distorsion guitar and a deep saxophone breath. Being mostly instrumental, the deep tone of Ronan Mac Erlaine's voice comes to ease the stormy start of the music piece. A grainy and blissful track that resembles music coming through of a 50s radio speaker, letting dark jazz flooding the room. "Pisces Analogue" is a new WITXES piece based on "Nourrain Quinquet", a track from "Quatorze pièces de menaces" by Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones. In five movements, the track explores the interstices and cracks of the dark, minimalist, lurking, cycle-evolving original piece. It offers to take a look at some of its nooks, focus on a few of its endless micro-universes and jump from one to another in a flash. Just like swimming in a puzzling dream. If there is anything in common with previous Witxes output, it is a strong sense of motion as well as narration to be seized by the listener. Though this piece uses heavily processed instruments takes from "Nourrain Quinquet" as well as a few typical Witxes field recordings, it is Witxes most synthetic work to date. It was written, recorded and mixed in 3 weeks during summer of 2014 in Lyon and co-produced by Michael Mysak. He has been classically trained on the piano and currently studies contemporary classical composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. During his teenage years he started playing drums and gained experience as a member of various bands. Experimenting with different styles of music, he turned back to piano as his main instrument, which facilitates to find his way towards composition and improvisation, before releasing his debut “The Monarch and the Viceroy” on Denovali Records in 2012. Over the last three years CARLOS CIPA played over 60 concerts all over Europe and shared the stage with like-minded musicians like HAUSCHKA, ÓLAFUR ARNALDS and VALGEIR SIGURDSSON. “All Your Life You Walk” is his long awaited second solo album. Carlos Cipa created unique contemporary compositions fraught with beauty, tension and emotional intensity, clearly presenting the unique voice of a composer, who is fascinated by classical and contemporary composers ranging from MOZART, DEBUSSY or RAVEL to STEVE REICH and DAVID LANG, but is also inspired by modern bands like THE NATIONAL or MOGWAI. While his first full-length solo album “The Monarch and the Viceroy” (2012) is invariably based on the piano, his second publication “Relive”(2013) - a collaborative EP with pianist/composer SOPHIA JANI - adds sounds from the inside of the piano to the compositions. On his sophomore record “All Your Life You Walk” he continues this idea by electronically altering these atmospheric sounds and gentle beats, combining them with sounds from various other instruments, before adding them to his distinctive piano playing. Over the last two years, CARLOS CIPA has been collecting instruments, that were not longer in use: An Upright Piano, a Guitaret - a very rare instrument built by Hohner in the 1960s, previously played as well by musicians like WARREN ELLIS, LEO ABRAHAM or Icelandic experimental band MÙM -, an old Framus bass guitar from the 1960s, a marimba and a “Bavarian Hackbrett” (known as hammered dulcimer), that were getting all dusty in the attic of two childhood friends, an Oceanharp, a Glockenspiel, a few other percussion instruments and an old radio receiver, that belonged to his grandparents. “All your life you walk” is a contemporary piano album, self-recorded, -performed and -produced in Carlos Cipa's very own “Beatschuppen Studio”. Though each piece is framed as a coherent song, it's all pieces combined that create a musical flow, spanning over the whole album, with pieces converging and so-called fragments, that either lead over or build a contrast to the surrounding pieces. Classically trained on violin and piano from an early age, she studied piano and composition at Edinburgh University before completing a masters degree in Piano Performance. A long-term collaborator with Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts Records, Denovali Records), she also works with other musicians and artists, creating soundtracks for film, dance, physical theatre and radio. Her debut album 'Escapement' (Denovali Records, 2012) impressed with its delicate, intricate and beautifully atmospheric music, created using only piano and violin (with the exception of a few field recordings). In 2013 Poppy collaborated with visual artist Lumen to create bespoke films for her live performances. Demand from audiences led to a DVD of the music and visuals combined - 'Escapement Visualised' - being released in September 2014. November 2014 sees the release of her second full-length album 'Feathers', which she will be performing live across Europe in the months following the release. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Poppy began to develop her own compositional style, using conventional pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well. Like 'Escapement', her second album 'Feathers' mostly consists of piano and violin, but the palate of sounds is increased with other acoustic keyboard instruments - including harmonium, clavichord, harpsichord and spinet - and in the string sections Poppy's violin lines are augmented by guest cellist Su-a Lee. Poppy's beloved, restored Blüthner grand piano in her studio is again the backbone of the album, providing most of the melodies, bass lines and percussive sounds. Other material originated from improvised recording sessions at the Russell/Mirrey Collection of keyboard instruments in Edinburgh. Having previously spent time there dismantling different pianos to understand how their mechanisms work and make sound, she was given complete freedom on her own in the museum to experiment with around fifty keyboard instruments from the 16th century to the 19th century. Selecting a few instruments for 'Feathers' that produced a variety of different timbres, it was again the other sounds these instruments could make that interested her, when treating them as sources for melodic or percussive material. Recordings of unfamiliar sounds, which include brushing/plucking the strings and tapping/stroking the frames or soundboards, are combined with accidental 'imperfect' sounds that come from playing the instrument, such as pedal noise or the sound of harpsichord shutters opening and closing. There is an intimate feel to the recordings as these older instruments are not designed to project sound loudly, so the microphones were placed very close to capture the minutest detail. Field recordings add to the cinematic and atmospheric quality of the music: chiming wall clocks in Timeless, traffic noise on Roads, and the wave and pebble sounds from Brighton beach in Birdwoman. The title of the album was inspired by the line 'Hope is the thing with feathers' (Emily Dickinson) - it also references the feather quill in the mechanisms of some of the keyboard instruments, and the recurring themes of birds and flight. With its delicate textures, rhythmic intricacy and achingly beautiful melodies, 'Feathers' is the perfect companion for stories of love, loss, hope and migration. They've released four critically-acclaimed albums; toured extensively across Europe with acts such as Cult of Luna and Mono; have soundtracked a number of independent films and had their work featured on NBC, HBO and SyFy channels; and are now mainstays of the European festival circuit (including a triumphant midnight set at Glastonbury 2014). Singer-songwriter Duncan Attwood's astonishingly affecting melancholy vocals have always been the chilly heart of Blueneck's music (2006's SCARS OF THE MIDWEST, 2009's THE FALLEN HOST, 2011's REPETITIONS), so fans were surprised when the band released the hushed, vocal-free soundtrack album EPILOGUE in 2012. Over his long, much celebrated career, he has worked between audiovisual installation works, sound art, minimal soundscapes, and as one half of Porter Ricks. Among others, he has composed film soundtracks and music to accompany historic silent films for the Louvre Museum and the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, who called him a major innovator in the contemporary music scene. Tiento is a form of keyboard-based music originating in Spain. In his past discography, Thomas Köner has mostly used the piano in a barely recognisable way, as one element of many. However, after a particular radical experience he found himself caught with the piano in his focus, with this rigid instrument which has been developed and solidified in the 17th century just to enslave composers and musicians for centuries to come. Thus, it could come as a surprise for those familiar with Köner's work and attitude, that in his first tiento to be released -- "Tiento de las Nieves" ("snow-tiento") -- he uses the piano, as an instrument, in an un-deconstructed way. To escape and handle the rigidity of the piano, Köner uses his distinctive ansatz to understand music rather as something filling the space of the temporal dimension than as a succession of multi-layered sounds. For him the musical score of any of his pieces is a priori meaningless, and receives meaning only by placing the notes and sounds at particular points in time in a way which is forced upon them by their inner logic. Like atoms in a particular molecule, these notes ought to have a specific distance and order dictated by certain laws, they might have to occur repeatedly, in order for the musical piece to be physically stable and complete, and thus to be able to exist continuously. For this reason, "Tiento de las Nieves" turned out to be a 68-minute long single piece. Upon producing this tiento, Thomas Köner had a strong and clear sensation of a large white space. Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen has always been an important figure for Köner. In a quote from his expedition account 'Farthest North', Nansen constructs a synthesis between love and snow. With this piece Köner builds a bridge between his associated sensation of a large white space and the snowy, foggy landscapes known to him from his various own expeditions, in a quasi dialectic process. Formed for the improvisation nights Dynamo in Brest, France, this quartet made of musicians covering a wide variety of musical styles creates a sound that mixes electronic (samples, cuts, sound treatments) and acoustic elements (guitars, saxophone, trumpet). They're playing moody ballads that sound as if they would come out from one of David Lynch's movies. Like in the films of Hollywood's master of bizarre pieces, there is something like a dark and poisonous colour broken by red thunderlights and blue cigarette smoke. The music spawnes some odd characters and landscapes while the listener makes out some more friendly faces that loom up out of this nowhere place: the voice of Zalie Bellaccico, Milanese streets sounds, a lazy flute, or some distant breathing swim on the surface of this deep troubled waters. "Paroles de Navarre" is an invitation for opening the red curtain of this Dark Jazz cabaret made of shimmering and whirling walls.
