  1. none of what you have is worth money, do not waste your tiime

there is a good chance you will find a handful in there worth 5-10 dollars, however, by then you will have spent about 10 hours researching them and another 5 hours taking pictures, listing them on ebay, packaging them, etc. Making your net pay roughly 3 dollars an hour.

Don't listen to these people, they don't know what you have in there, people on this board don't really know anything about records released before 1990 or collecting as s serious hobby, and they don't know whats in your collection there. It only takes 1 record to make it worth your time.

Last year I got my hands on an old collection of 45's, about 30 boxes of them, dating from the early 50's to the mid 80's, and while a lot was not worth money, many of them were. I sold 60 of them on eBay and made $1,400.

Condition is king with older records, 1st presses are typically important as well. It is going to be the artists you never heard of that are probably worth the money. For example I had a 45 from a guy named Champion Jack Dupree, never heard of the dude but the song sounded interesting, not only was it a great 45, that one went for 100 bucks and probably would have went for more if I started the bidding higher as it was in the price guide as 300-400.

I will PM with some word files that will help you price things. Keep in mind guides price for NM condition so I like to cut prices by 1/4th to get a responsible price. Popsike is only good if the record has sold on eBay, I came across a ton that were not listed on popsike when going over mine.

I think you should listen to them as well. One of the best things I have done in years was go through the records and play them, often I stopped them half way into a track, but I found some great stuff that I love. Digging into old records is FUN! Regardless of what you can sell.

When you say huge, how huge of a collection you have?

Some things currently going well are rockabilly records and northern soul, anything on a small label geared toward black music tends to be sought after these days. Look out for Sun label stuff, Elvis can make you a lot of money if you have the right ones, and there are a ton. Expect to ship a lot of Rockabilly and Elvis overseas if you sell on eBay, international is a must with older records.

  2. Yeah, it's (mostly) grounded, it's not a grounding issue. That was killing me for the first couple days. I say mostly because once it's around 8PM the buzzing comes back; something to do with my air conditioning. I was told to get a line conditioner to remedy that.

If you have humming all you need to do is order this part from radio shack:

    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062214

Replace the RCA cable from turntable to recievier/amp with this one. Humming gone.

oh, and my Red copy of this album sounds great, one of my favorite LPs as a whole, nice sound, nice book, etc..

  3. keep in mind that the house has to qualify for this loan though.

and you will have to pay mortgage insurance.

House qualifications are pretty easy to meet, your place just can't be a piece of junk.

I do pay mortgage insurance, 45 bucks a month, I can re-fi in like 2 years and get rid of it.

Everything has a pro and con, but its a great solution to not putting a large down payment down.

  4. downpayments are incredibly depressing. virtually none of the rentals in my area allow for big dogs, so i decided to live at home for awhile longer to save up for a down payment on a house. i feel lucky to be able to do that. i know soooooo many people who could easily afford the monthly mortgage payment, but since they're paying monthly rent + student loans back, it's impossible for them to save up enough for a down payment.

I was just thinking about this too. I have a good "nest egg," but I wouldn't want to use that as a down payment in case anything ever happened to me like losing my job. So saving up for a down payment looks like it will take quite a long time.

In the US you can get a FHA loan and not use your nest egg as a down payment. I put 3% down under an FHA loan.

  5. It's your pre-amp.

    Srsly.

You don't know what my system is, so how do you know?

    Take a chill pill man.

My point is that I just picked up an pre-amp based on the price and never really thought about it.

But when I got the chance to change it out I was blown away by the sound difference.

Just trying to be helpful, and let people know if they just picked up a cheapo, they may want to consider upgrading. I was not getting the full experience out of my speakers or my turntable for years. This goes for pre-amp & amps in general.

  6. Over the years a few, "my system hums like a mother" threads have come up. No solution ever mentioned a Ground Loop, which is the cause.

I found a great cheap solution to any humming issue you have when trying to resolve a home theater sub woofer hum.

Its caused by a ground loop, when the amp in your pre-amp and the amp in your powered speakers or receiver are fighting to define ground.

You can buy a Ground Loop Isolator from Radio Shack which is basically a RCA cable with a little bottle like thing in it that you plug between the pre-amp and your receiver.

    Woo hoo!!

  7. It's your pre-amp.

    Srsly.

I spent the last 7 years with a cheapo I bought off eBay for 25 bucks.

Then I found a slightly better cheapo at the thrift store.

The sound quality is like day and night. I had to tweak some settings but once done my speakers just seemed to be alive.

Do yourself a big favor, invest in a good amp to drive your system. You will be happy you did.

    Thats all!
